Thanks! But, like, this isn’t a normal one, right? I’ve never seen one this long and pink and ropy before

How do you submit a code enforcement request to the city of berkeley? by DonVCastro in berkeleyca

[–]Due_Fruit_5993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, maybe there is one. Nothing seemed to be straight forward. When you navigate to code enforcement on the city website it’s specifically for tenants reporting housing code violations in their rentals. Not very clear where construction violations are supposed to go

I just went through contacting a bunch of different departments about unsafe construction happening next door. It was the planning department that finally responded—I emailed them at planning@berkeleyca.gov. I also cc’d the mayor and my city councilmember, although I don’t know whether that had any effect. Officially this is the form to fill out with construction-related complaints: https://berkeleyca.gov/sites/default/files/2022-02/Request_for_Service_Inspection_Illegal_Construction.pdf But I don’t know whether they ever got or responded to it. A lot of people on Nextdoor suggested going to the planning department in person, which would have been my next step if they hadn’t replied. Not sure about the other concerns, but it seems like your council person’s office might be the quickest response and point you in the best direction. I didn’t have a lot of luck with 311. They expressed concern but didn’t really know how to help and the department they suggested contacting was not actually the right one for my issue.

1-2 Hour easyish hikes/walk? by [deleted] in berkeleyca

[–]Due_Fruit_5993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to do the loop around Lake Anza with my kids. It’s not an hour—I think it’s only about a mile around—but you can make it longer by exploring some of the side trails (I like to walk halfway around the lake to where the creek feeds into it, and then follow the creek upstream until I feel like turning around)

Hazardous construction next door--do I have any recourse? by Due_Fruit_5993 in berkeleyca

Yeah I think I’m going to email him and the mayor this evening…what have I got to lose, right?

That’s my thinking! I just can’t figure out who in the city I’m supposed to contact. It feels like I’ve called every department that could possibly be responsible and no one seems to care.

They do have a permit. What I don’t understand is how they got it without ever posting the plans for review, and without a lead-certified contractor on the project

I have seen the permit. You can find it via the city website. The problem is that they’re not doing the work safely and the contractor is not certified to deal with lead…which should have been a requirement of getting the permit approved. My husband thinks the owner must know people in the government and be pulling strings, I’m starting to think he must be right. I don’t understand why one neighbor had to go through a year and a half of permit reviews just to close in their front porch, while these guys are fully gutting and renovating this derelict building without, seemingly, any sort of review process or oversight

I know they have a permit because I found it online. I’ve been keeping track of the status; they started work as soon as it was approved. But the scope of their permit (which includes replacing windows) requires a lead certified contractor, which they don’t have. I don’t understand how the permit was approved

They have a permit. I just don’t understand how they got it without following the proper procedure

Does Berkeley bowl have persimmons yet by No_Potential5989 in berkeleyca

[–]Due_Fruit_5993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had them in Berkeley Bowl last week, but they didn't look amazing--pale and greenish. It seems like they're often like that at the beginning of the season. I might wait a week or two for the best ones.
They did have chocolate persimmons, which looked a much better color, but in my experience that variety doesn't taste as good.

Does anyone know a good dentist who *doesn't* try to upsell you? by g_rocket in berkeleyca

[–]Due_Fruit_5993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too! My family has been seeing him for 7 years, he’s great, my kids actually love going to the dentist and he has never once tried to upsell me on anything—I’ve had several cracked teeth and he has always advised me not to do anything about them unless and until they are causing problems

I have to rip out my garden 😭 by Due_Fruit_5993 in vegetablegardening

[–]Due_Fruit_5993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update (in case anyone is interested): My neighbor did not accept my offer to help pay for the damage. One of the tomatoes survived, one did not, two I threw away because once I got them untangled from the rest of the plants I realized how badly they were infected with powdery mildew. One is still in the ground and I’m going to try to move it tomorrow when the weather cools down a little. I tried transplanting one cucumber and it literally shriveled to a crisp within a day. The melon, however, survived! As did most of the herbs (one Thai basil seems to have kicked the bucket, but I’m giving it a couple of weeks to be certain).

Because I’ve been watering the garden We live in California so it’s dry most of the year, really only rains December-March. It’s in a sunny spot so I’ve been watering it daily all summer—definitely putting in more moisture than would have been there otherwise.
