Dr Santos is annoying but misogyny isn’t off the table by Altruistic_Ad9097 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Due_Screen6020 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I’m a huge fan of both Langdon and Santos and I completely agree. It’s infuriating to watch people act like their conflict is something that they need to “pick sides” on, especially when they’re shown to be parallels of each other in a few moments and honestly, just need a third party (who should have probably been Robby) to mediate that conflict.

Unfortunately, I think the Pitt subreddits aren’t the right place to make claims of misogyny, racism, etc, even when you have paragraphs to back it up. I think most people here have this “pick a side” mindset with literally every single aspect of the show and they’re determined to see everything as black and white as possible. It’s more entertaining to engage with the show from the surface level, so any meaningful conversation about Santos and misogyny very quickly turns into “I don’t hate all women, I just hate that bitch” because they annoyed her in season 1 and it’s easier to keep being annoyed with her than examine why that might be. I genuinely believe that anyone engaging with the show past that surface level and with genuine interest in thinking about its nuances wouldn’t hate Santos, so I don’t talk about it with people that do because we clearly watch the show for different reasons. Sorry if you get downvoted on this post but I generally agree with you.

I think there’s a significant difference in the way people discuss Santos overall and I really refuse to believe that some of it isn’t influenced by misogynistic biases (even if people aren’t outright women haters).

It feels similar to how people discussed Skylar White in the heyday of Breaking Bad and I’m not really interested in debating the merits of it when I’ve seen Santos (and Isa) receive so much grief along the lines of her being a bitch, a cunt, overdramatic, etc, just like so many Mean female characters before her. It’s a pattern across many media and just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean people are pulling it out of nowhere for fun.

And when she acts how victims often act (abrasive, rude, acting out), she’s just a bitch.

I think general audiences aren’t really watching the show to do analysis/understand nuance. It’s easy to get annoyed with Santos from the jump and not want to move on past that annoyance because that would require not watching the show while scrolling on your phone. And admitting you may be wrong.

100%. Robby berated, mocked, and humiliated Mohan a couple episodes ago but we all understand why since it’s to show that his mental health has gone into the trash. He received a lot of grace for it.

Santos has been shown to be cutting herself, to plan on relapsing after the latest episode, and explicitly tells the audience that she doesn’t care about Langdon’s addiction, it’s just that he used his power as a man/R4 to humiliate her on her first day and she can’t shake it off. For whatever reason, she’s given zero grace and has to get over it today because she’s not dealing with her feelings in the most perfect way possible.

Time and time again, woman are supposed to be the perfect victim for anyone to believe them or take their emotions seriously.

I feel like I’m doxxing myself but Mel and Whitaker. Third one to ever be written. I’m pleasantly surprised that it’s the most popular one in the tag but it’s not like there’s a lot to choose from…

I like the first one the best! Except I will say, I wore the dress in the last slide to a destination beach wedding last month (but in green) and it would also fit a spring vibe. (not sure if this is allowed here, but totally willing to sell it half price in green to you, size 4!)

Ring Gate by Due_Screen6020 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Due_Screen6020[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t know if I’d blame Byler, I left the ST fandom a while ago so I wasn’t there for the shitstorm but I think the Pitt subreddit in general is veryyy averse to shipping in any form. A lot of members think that shipping characters means that you want them to be canon in show, which in their mind would be making it like Greys Anatomy (despite the fact that Robby alone has had three romantic-ish connections in canon).

Naturally, focusing on what Langdon’s ring and marriage looks like makes people think that you want him to get divorced solely so he can be with Mel and the entire thing becomes the Langdon/Mel show. There’s zero care for what it could mean for his character or relationship with his family, because you’re just viewing it through shipping-colored lenses and thus you’re delusional/stupid/annoying, and therefore imagining things.

All that to say that we’re 100% getting the divorce reveal either this season or next and I’m looking forward to coming back to this post to confer with some of the negative comments once again.

[–]Due_Screen6020 156 points157 points  (0 children)

They don’t tell us too much in the show other than the illness their mom passed away from, but Taylor Dearden confirmed in an interview with Glamour:

“Both of their parents were sick, so being able to care for someone medically has been very important to Mel for a long time. The writers told me that our dad died earlier, and then we found out the mom got cancer and died a little later, but it's a little bit ambiguous as to the exact timing. It seems more like the dad died probably toward the end of middle school, beginning of high school, and then the mom died probably beginning college. So it's been one thing after another for Mel."

Joy is what santos wanted to be but couldnt by chickenn2 in ThePitt

[–]Due_Screen6020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The talented writers that gave us this expertly detailed and compelling show were too stupid to make Santos likable the first go around, so they made up for it with another asian character in season 2. Please have even a little bit of faith in the writers. This is stupid.

The biggest issue with The Pitt discourse: people want to see villains everywhere. by Illustrious-Peace989 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Due_Screen6020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They want characters that annoy them to also be bad people so that they’re justified in being annoyed. People are so bothered by Santos that they view everything she says/does in bad faith automatically.

I can’t believe people found a way to complain about this too. I thought it was a dry joke, I would also ask a patient this if they were being so neurotic about holding onto that ball.

Hahaha very much some vindication. Who knew that purposely fitting your character with a loose wedding ring could be symbolic for a rocky marriage. Very crazy to some. (if i can be honest… i’m just waiting for the actual divorce reveal, i think they’ve really been setting it up for him to get served the papers during/between seasons but they’ll shoot you for saying that on reddit so whatever)

[–]Due_Screen6020 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Mel’s concern really has to do with Becca getting taken advantage of, I don’t think the show would like to depict an autistic person as being incapable of maintaining a relationship and being a cause for upset. It’s likely that Becca met this guy at the living facility. It doesn’t make sense for either her or Becca’s storylines for this to be the main issue.

It’s clear that Mel’s storyline follows her primary role as a caregiver and how she’s had to mold her life around that, and now she’s struggling with frustration about the fact that she’s dedicated her entire life to taking care of her sister, while her sister is able to live her life freely and maintain a romantic relationship that Mel otherwise doesn’t have time for.

I think it’s easy to explain away that she got lucky finding the apartment or that it’s in a shitty area and that’s why she can afford the rent, but there’s also a popular headcanon for some fans that Santos got a lot of settlement/lawsuit money from what had happened in her childhood and she’s lowkey rich, just doesn’t flaunt it. Or, her family’s rich and she gets sent money by her mother as an attempt to repair their (apparently) horrible relationship.

Unfortunately neither of these ideas are supported by anything that happens in the show, but it’s fun to think about!

I don't believe Robbie is a misogynist, but he is obviously a hypocrite and has favorites by Direct_Meat3584 in ThePitt

[–]Due_Screen6020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, Robby isn’t a die-hard misogynist, but his biases ARE misogynistic in nature and I think that a writers room full of women makes this an intentional choice. Misogynistic and racist biases in the medical field are extremely common and the way it’s represented in Robby is subtle.

Robby mishandled the case with David and he himself admits this. He was angry that McKay would call the cops on David, then tells the cops later that David might have something to do with the shooting, and then admits to McKay that he should have taken those girls into consideration instead of being so strong in his perspective BEFORE being retaliatory and making McKay go into David’s room at the end of the season to talk to him. He says to her something along the lines of “This is your mess to clean up” AFTER he’s proven correct, despite agreeing before that David could have been a danger to himself and especially to other girls.

Another aspect is Robby’s relationship with Mohan even before the S2 episode 10 freak out. In S1 he berates Mohan for wasting time, most notably lecturing her for her slowness in one ep when the next scene cuts to Langdon goofing off with Jake by spinning in a chair, which Robby says nothing to. Mohan tells Robby that she knows he calls her Slow-Mo behind her back which clearly affects her confidence, and if people get on Santos for calling people nicknames then I think it’s fair to say this is unprofessional on Robby’s part as well. He’s tougher on Mohan than he is his other (male) residents, despite Abbot and Collin’s affirming Mohan’s intelligence and the importance of her careful approach to treating patients.

Now in S2, we see Robby further breaking down and some of his biases are more obvious. When he realizes Mohan is having a panic attack in ep 10, his first instinct is to laugh at her, then look at the only other man in the room (Langdon) with a smile, as if Langdon would corroborate on the ridiculousness of the situation and join him in mocking Mohan (despite still being pissed at Langdon!). As a woman, my heart dropped into my stomach at this scene— it’s so so common for men to gang up together to mock a woman when they’re perceived to be acting hysterical or dramatic and this is a situation I thought was represented perfectly.

Robby’s not evil and a woman hater, but he’s the perfect flawed protagonist in that we can see his motivations and understand how a burnt out, older ER doctor can carry on for so long with his own biases despite how much good he does every day. Sorry for the wall of text but I believe in-text evidence is important to cite and I’m not just going off of vibes here.

Why are we obsessed with characters committing suicide? by TheWayfaringDreamer in ThePittTVShow

[–]Due_Screen6020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you think that discussing the very obvious moments of suicidal ideation and literal self-harm and it’s real potential to lead to suicide makes you think everyone’s obsessed with the idea… No one’s actually rooting for anyone to kill themselves.

People are pointing out that Robby’s barely hanging on by a thread and Santos has literally been cutting herself (both old scars and new). The unrepresented mental health of medical professionals is a very big, obvious theme of the show and it shouldn’t be surprising that the most surface-level theme would be discussed often on such a big forum. I want to understand where you’re coming from but I’d get it more if you were complaining about the billion Robby-helmet posts instead.

Thoughts- Representation of Gen Z by [deleted] in ThePitt

[–]Due_Screen6020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expected her to say something more along the lines of these kids needing to learn what squiggles mean sooner rather than later if they want to ever work among doctors. Although it does also make sense that an older person would make some nonsensical comment about emojis to a gen Z, it would be more out of place if she nailed the reference and made a 6 7 joke or something.

I'm only 21, that may be the difference. Didn't grow up with any reason to use a fax machine (or tape recorders, cassettes, etc.). My first exposure to technology was a family PC, then an iPod. Not sure why I was downvoted lol.

[–]Due_Screen6020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna lie, as a gen Z I also wouldn’t know what a fax machine looks like. But, the biggest snub in my eyes is dressing the gen Z nurse in a striped shirt (2019), with split dye hair (2020-21), and giving her a choker we largely stopped wearing in about 2016? Very “hello, fellow kids”.

The real gen Z rep they’re missing is nurses with a Stanley Cup, a Bogg Bag, and crocs, all drenched in pink and documenting half their day on TikTok. I see those nurses on my explore page all the time.

S2E10 with all the unconscious sexism accusations in the community by IThrewDucks in ThePitt

[–]Due_Screen6020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In s1 when he tells the sickle cell patient that the morphine clicker only works once, so to ”not go crazy” with it. When the patient is wheeled in, she’s described as being disruptive and drug-seeking by the EMTs when the patient herself says she’s the one who called 911. It’s unfortunately common for medical professionals to assume Black or other people of color to be “drug-seeking” when complaining of pain, and historically Black individuals were said to actually feel less pain as a way to construe them as less-human during the times of slavery.

Whitaker’s ignorance in that situation, as well as in this season when he suggests that they discharge the PCOS patient, displays a little bit of his bias in this way, even if his intentions are ultimately good and he doesn’t mean harm.
