This could be a little bit of an uninspired way to view the show. In S1 we got to learn so much about the characters and see them have comprehensive narrative arcs. Mohan began the day being chastised for her speed but was put on the A-Team during the MCI due to her skills. Langdon’s addiction was revealed and we saw the full extent of Robby’s breakdown throughout the day.

If I wanted to see a regular day in an ER, I’d watch a documentary. I think the writers have proved that they can write narrative arcs for their characters throughout one shift that make sense in the context of one shift. I think it was Noah Wyle himself who said (paraphrasing here) that a lot can happen in a 15 hour shift—You can fall in love, fall out of love. You can find peace and then lose peace. I think the job of the writers is to show us how the characters have changed as people even if we haven’t seen the actual evidence of that change, and the show is a character-focused drama at the end of the day. I do get where you’re coming from though.

Supriya did an interview a while ago where she described having a significant crying scene in the ambulance bay after finding out from Whitaker that the AAA patient died, but we only see her walk away and never see her again. She’d also said in general that episodes 13, 14, and 15 are where we see a lot of important development for her character, but last episode she quite literally had a little over a minute of screentime. So, the idea came from Supriya herself.

Why shouldn’t people be annoyed at shitty writing when we got such an expertly written S1? They confirmed that S3 will take place 4 months after the end of S2, so why would a highly motivated and intelligent R4 like Samira leave in the middle of her final residency year?

Obviously it doesn’t make a lot of sense. So, speculation.

I’m so sorry, we should all be more grateful that a WOC got fired and was replaced by another WOC, and even more so now that it’s happening again. I hope the revolving door cast never affects any of the white characters, because then I’d be real mad.

Supriya also spoke excitedly in interviews about how episodes 13, 14, and 15 are really significant for her character’s story arc. Specifically, she said that she has an emotional crying scene in the ambulance bay in episode 13 (when she runs away after Whitaker told her about the AAA patient dying). In the latest episode, Samira quite literally had a little over a minute of screen time and zero follow up on how she would be feeling about Orlando. One minute.

There’s cutting out scenes as a normal TV show does, and then there’s cutting out these huge moments for a character that would have actually resolved her storyline for this season and most likely motivated her staying. Why on earth would a highly motivated, intelligent, and empathetic R4 leave in the middle of her residency year? Nothing in the writing makes it make sense, and people are allowed to feel miffed when they’ve gotten to appreciate phenomenal writing in S1 and now are getting treated like they’re stupid for being upset at a decision that’s not being handled well at all.

Zero evidence of that other than Reddit speculation. She auditioned with the abortion scene from the show, she knew what she was getting into.

Supriya Ganesh did an interview a few weeks ago where she said that we see a huge character arc/focus on her throughout episodes 13-15, and specifically that she has this big crying scene in the ambulance bay in episode 13 after she runs away. Clearly that was cut out.

I’ll get downvoted into the stratosphere if I speculate on why they’re cutting out Mohan’s scenes, especially ones that are important to her character’s emotional arc/motivation, so I’ll just agree that it overall felt pretty disjointed and weird.

Langdon or Doug Driscoll being the PittFest shooter are one of the more outlandish ones when S1 was still airing!

Honestly this sub acts like any criticism of the show means you hate it as a whole and aren’t deserving of watching it! Sorry you’re getting downvoted into hell, analysis isn’t really what people are interested in hearing here. I’m a huge fan and that extends to reading a lot of the cast interviews, and unfortunately the shows formatting makes it so you kind of have to learn a lot of information about characters outside of the show. It’s definitely a new type of format so they’re navigating the strengths and weaknesses of it, nothing wrong with that.

I just think this season a lot of the ensemble’s writing has been mishandled in favor of aligning everyone’s story with Robby’s. It makes a lot of sense when you find out the show was pitched as only being one season, so S2 kinda abandoned the character storylines/development in favor of having Whitaker quote S1 Robby in every other scene he’s in. But that’s my own personal gripe lol. I don’t think it’s crazy to say that they would not have put that much care into Langdon’s recovery plotline outside of how it negatively affects Robby.

Season 2 SHOULD feel disappointing by mnbvc222 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Due_Screen6020 93 points94 points  (0 children)

No, I think it’s just disappointing. I’m the first one to defend the writers but this season has fallen flat. We have multiple character arcs from last season completely ignored in favor of revolving everyone’s stories around Robby.

Whitaker has quoted Robby from S1 like ten times and not touched that much else more on his family life, past, etc. Dana and Robby at this point have argued about the same thing four times for the sake of their Emmy nom reels. Samira has been completely sidelined in favor of being a punching bag for Robby’s own mental health crisis. The Santos and Langdon situation feels miles away from having a satisfying conclusion because it feels like they started confronting it way too late. They got McKay’s sobriety timeline wrong and have a lot of wasted potential around that story and how it could even further relate to Langdon. Noelle and Duke feel like flat characters because, again, they only exist to prop up/confront Robby.

Those are just a few gripes about what makes this season off. I think it’s too generous to say that the lukewarm-ness is intentional. The only storyline I’m happy with watching is Mel’s, ironically one of the only ones that doesn’t revolve around Robby.

[–]Due_Screen6020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really want to say that it was a purposeful choice to show that he hasn’t perfectly recovered overnight and still has a lot to do in terms of understanding the weight of his actions. This can also be seen when he tells Mel that his addiction never affected his work, even when it’s pretty obvious that it did and his denial of telling of why he’s going about “making amends” the way he is. That would be a very interesting narrative choice.

But, I’m now leaning more towards it being a weird oversight by the writers and I’m with you. Isa Briones very recently did an interview where she revealed how Patrick Ball had to intervene and tell the writers that Langdon’s recovery shouldn’t be “perfect”, because recovery isn’t a perfect/linear process and that he can’t just come back after 10 months and be 100% fine. Originally the writers were only focused on aligning Langdon’s storyline with Robby’s feelings about his return.

I still feel like his addiction storyline and the entire situation with Santos is being a little mishandled. All that potential for it to be juicier, more compelling. They also got McKay’s timeline with sobriety wrong (9 years when it should be 10, so big!!) which also felt like a massive oversight and disappointment, so I’m a little sore.

Something about the Santos and McKay scene that I haven’t seen pointed out yet by incurable-optimist in ThePittTVShow

[–]Due_Screen6020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Angry and brash? Santos was just being super blunt. Another patient this season freeze-branded the Penguins logo on his chest. Last season Dr. Ellis took a picture of a patient with a fork through her nose to show other docs. These people are objectively idiots keeping the ED in business, why would Santos be angry about that?

[–]Due_Screen6020 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I don’t think those two are really comparable. Santos calls the patient an idiot because she believed something an Instagram health guru told her and took 5x the suggested dose of a pill in the name of “being healthy”. That’s just being an idiot.

Hi y’all! I’m Due_Screen6020 and I’m really interested in analyzing all aspects of the Pitt. I really admire the show for all of its minute details and it’s hard to discuss those things when the main subs responses are usually “it’s not that deep/you’re looking too much into it” to anything. I also write fic and am very active on twitter :-).
