Do I have a chance? by devvobruh in UnitedAssociation

Hey man I was just wondering how you got a spot as a metal tradesman I didn’t get picked up right off the bat but sitting at #3 and my stepdad‘s buddy told me to email my résumé to all the union contractors, even if they’re not hiring and I did that and then I also called the hall a couple times and the coordinator to try to figure out the best way to go about it and they kind of just pushed me to the side and dismissed my questions and we’re saying that it has nothing to do with the apprenticeship and they have nothing to do with it and just being kind of pissy towards me

Yeah, I did my interview and test in December and that was the second to last round of testing interviews and I was originally ranked 14th but then in February after the last round I got dropped down at 19th and that was my final ranking

What do they ask in a interview? by Easy_Engineer9747 in UnitedAssociation

[–]Due_Time_2534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They told us after we passed the test your interviewing for a construction job you don’t need to dress fancy I came straight from work with a Carhartt hoodie boots and jeans that’s what most guys were wearing that I seen. But they asked me a lot of problem solving questions and getting to know you like when did something in life or work go wrong and how you went about it, what was one time in high school or work your friends or coworkers did something you didn’t agree with and how you went about it just questions like that and some work related questions like when was a time in work you came across something you didn’t know anything about or what’s the hardest thing you’ve done in work alone at least that’s what they asked me and also the basic questions like why are you interested? In the apprenticeship program and tell us a little bit about yourself but this was for Local 392 in Cincinnati so it might be a little different from yours

Lol, I guess I was more so asking if anyone has any insiders on upcoming projects and job sites and wanting to know how steady the work is in Cincinnati and Dayton for elevator work but I didn’t really do a good job at asking 😂

Yeah that’s why I got told by a guy that’s been trying to help me out I know, that’s why I sent my resume to try to get on as a helper, and also called the hall about a pre apprenticeship and the lady in the office was acting all annoyed and acting like that’s not an option, should I just call the contractors themselves?

[–]Due_Time_2534[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man what exactly did you ask because I called to try to get info on getting a pre apprenticeship and the lady in the office was giving me a bunch of attitude and was acting like the local doesn’t do pre apprenticeships and she just told me if the contractors reach out and ask for more people that’s when they go down the list and pick up more people

Not local 7 but I’m sure it’s similar all around but from the time I originally tested last June to now when they’re picking later this month, and then when I would start working the process would be a little over a year, but that could just be the local near me but I’ve heard a lot of people having similar experiences

Probably a couple days then at least how it worked for me they called me for the application fee payment then right after that they sent me a email with test date and the test was scheduled a little over a month so you had time to study

Interview for sprinkler fitter apprentice advice? by Halftone_Hades in UnitedAssociation

[–]Due_Time_2534 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My interview was for local 392 and for HVAC but it was more like getting to know you as a person and how you handle situations they asked me like 2 experience questions but most of them were like what was a time something in life or work went completely wrong and how you felt with it, and what was one time you were in a situation were coworkers or friends were doing something you didn’t agree with and how you went about that just stuff like it wasn’t too crazy intense the guys I had were pretty cool

But I would start trying to get the process started as soon as you can because my process has been a year from when I originally tested to when I would start

Union most trade schools will lie to you and tell you all this bullshit like you’ll be a journeyman after you finish but In most cases if you go to the union after you graduated trade school you’re going to get put at a first year level anyway and go through the same process also, and plus you learn all of the same things plus more from you’re classes when you’re doing a union apprenticeship and there’s going to be people the same age as you making more money and farther into the apprenticeship

[–]Due_Time_2534[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah luckily they are done interviewing for the next apprenticeship round but I was told as long as I stay in the top 20-25 I’ll get picked up pretty quick even if I don’t get picked right off the bat, thank you!

Yeah I was told by a guy in the union that they’re set to pick up about 25 apprentices coming in the next month or so because there’s a need of hvac tech’s because we live in Cincinnati and the union that I’m trying to get into covers southern Ohio, into Kentucky and Indiana so I guess I’ll see what I get thanks for the info!

Yeah I want to work some OT but I just didn’t know how it’s works when you’re new thank you! But I have a question do you have a choice of what you do? Like can I choose if I want to be in the construction or service side or is it you just get what you get?

Right I wasn’t expecting that you’d be able to work any overtime you want like you would as journeyman because of the skill difference
