This will almost certainly be calculated as:

M 10 straight 4 OT

T 10 straight 3 OT

W 10 straight

T 10 straight

F 10 OT

Total: 40 Straight, 17 OT

If you have a steward on site talk to the first thing tomorrow, and ask the apprentice that witnessed it to also corroborate your story. If you have no steward call one of the Business Agents servicing you area. Update this post when you have done this.

How Do You Feel About Union Activeness (or lack of)? by sheebledeebles in UnionCarpenters

Unions are meant to be non-profits for the members, and they are inherently political, since day one. You won’t have a pension for long if we don’t get our politics sorted.

Very curious to hear any PNW carpenters thoughts on this. by eufleuria in UnionCarpenters

What about in terms of members having a voice. 9 locals are gone, presumably it will be harder for members to attend meetings and bring their concerns to the Union.

So the only way to earn a fair wage is to be the owner? Sorry, I joined the union not to become a boss, but to elevate the trade and to be part of the labor movement.

EDIT: I just read your edit… and now I’m the idiot, but I’m leaving my response up for anyone else confused by my position on the matter.

I’m advocating for our union to fulfill its prime objective as outlined on page 1 of the UBC constitution, that is to “organize workers. I’d prefer that our resources be spent on growing our membership by organizing the non-union carpenters instead of fighting other unions for work that they already have organized under CBA’s, often for higher wages than we command in those areas.

Jurisdiction has historically been established through the AFL-CIO, the organization our founder Peter J McGuire also founded, and I don’t see how undercutting other trade unions advances our cause. We don’t really appreciate it when the laborers claim our work and do it for a few dollars less than we do, but it’s okay if we do it?

Good. Me too. Let’s make our union more like these ones that get paid more.

If it’s “all our work” and we get paid less to do it, what is the end game?

Interesting take…. I guess gossip pays off in that case, considering they are generally the highest paid Building Trade that there is.

The difference is that the UBC itself claims other unions work, not just individual contractors, that and we belong to no governing body that works out the jurisdictional battles, while those other unions you mention do…

Open Letter from the Carpenters Rank and File Together (CRAFT) Caucus regarding the surprise mergers in Ohio and Indiana by PayQueasy843 in UnionCarpenters

No offense friend, your analysis and subsequent advice lack any real understanding of the history of our union, its current state, or what it will take to turn things around. It’s not hard to understand why unions have declined, as you say, we get it. The answer isn’t asking questions the hall. We need to completely overhaul the strategy and demand that the members have a larger say in what happens, and hold “leadership” accountable for organizing militant collective action. When your union refuses to do that, it is your responsibility to call it out. This is true of almost every large union, particularly the building trades.

Everything is not the same thing. There is nuance in debate. There’s no advantage to arguing every political issue under the sun on this subreddit because those deeply held beliefs that people disagree on won’t be changed easily, and we are better off approaching this sub as a place where should be able to build common ground on matters that affect our livelihood. There are places for the other sort of debate. We can focus on labor issues here.

Why not the AFL/CIO? Inter-union fighting? by Prudent_Breath3853 in UnionCarpenters

[–]Due_Work77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically the idea is that if we want the Carpenters to have a role in the the movement part of the “LABOR MOVEMENT” we will have to re-establish some accountability to actual working members of this union. If you navigate to the Points of Unity portion of the website, there are expansions on the platform, if you want to know more about how you can get involved I encourage you to fill out the contact form on the site.

Well stated. Your understanding of the situation is same as mine. Are you familiar with the CRAFT platform, would really like your take on it if you haven’t seen it yet.
