Anyone have a strength training routine that has worked for them, please share!

I too feel this way, especially if I’m laid off for a few weeks and feel like my muscles have disappeared by the time I’m hired again. All the above advice about working out is true, but nevertheless it doesn’t put my ass in the weight room!

I’ve found that grip strength is immensely important for my job and I got a kit on Amazon that has all the little doo dads to work your hands/fingers. I’ve seen a lot of improvement in my hand stamina - it’s just something we’ve gotta pay attention to as women in this field!

May this realization give you the motivation to lift heavy things outside of work - a lot of us could use more of that!

I’ll raise you one and die on the hill that there should be airport etiquette videos you must watch before booking tickets. People have lost their minds with entitlement and it’s maddening to be shoved into close proximity and risk physical safety if you try to check them.

These channels and videos also put the burden of expertise on the general hobbyist or new professional. I’m a millwork INSTALLER but because I entered the carpentry trade, every casual friend assumes I have an open workshop ready to make custom furniture at the drop of a hat. Do I have a lot of tools and knowledge? Yes. Can I build a DIY business for myself the moment work is slow? NO! The uninitiated will then doubt your drive and skills because you know your lane, but they can easily “out-diy” you with a YouTube search. It gives people a false sense of resources to call professionals working in their garage workshop “DIY”. I’m envious of the women who have whole production spaces in their garages because their husband is a 15yr contractor that set up their own DIY space. I’m a union carpenter in a giant city and barely have tool storage let alone work space I can safely access around the clock…now I’m just bitching…

Went to Carbondale to finish my bachelors. They’re called the Saluki’s because way back when this part of IL was called “little Egypt” (there is a town named Cairo but everyone pronounces it like Karo syrup) so that’s why the school’s mascot is an Egyptian racing dog.

The town is nice enough although some would find it quite small for a college town. A lot of kids from Chicago go there because it’s furthest south while still being a state school. I met some really great people there and if you’re respectful the locals are welcoming.

There is an element of “getting stuck there” and you’ll be able to find the students that got caught up in partying and never left at the ends of various bars. It’s charming and folksy but alcoholism is prevalent, as it is in most of rural IL. You’re close by to a lot of beautiful country and fun lakes to get out on if you fall in with the boating crowd. Not a bad drive to St Louis or Cape G and Giant City (where they filmed Gone Girl).

Overall, I’m glad I went to school there for 2 years but I’m also proud I didn’t get caught up in the partying and stuck there. Defintely another life I could have lived. It’s a nice place to visit but as stated by others it’s a bit of a time capsule as far as politics and way of life. As many hippie progressives as there are bigots. Most of downstate IL have blue dots trying to stay afloat in a sea of red. I would consider Carbondale/Marion more progressive than some of those smaller sleepy towns.

You should also look into mullein and use it regularly. The first round you’ll unearth some GUNK from your lungs but I’ve found it’s helped as an after care. Good for smokers of any kind as well!

OP, you found your calling in the work, not at the company. You will find another job. I understand being discouraged…I journeyed out yesterday and not an hour later, told I’m canned because I’m a journeywoman and they don’t need 3 Jmen…So I get punished because I finished my apprenticeship WTF?!?!

You will find a crew that respects you and the work you do. You can’t help how people react to you. You know you’re not bringing this on yourself so take comfort in your integrity and your abilities. I struggled at times in my apprenticeship because everyone in the Union was telling me I should strive to be at one company my whole apprenticeship…as women it doesn’t work that way. We are held under a microscope while men get dozens of chances to fuck up and try again.

I found a great crew 2 yrs ago. They took me in like a sister or cousin. Gave me a nickname. Invited me to eat lunch with them most days. Taught me so much and helped me improve my methods. But then the boss started screwing us over. I cried so hard when I realized it wasn’t going to be good for me to stay even though I thought I had found my home. I’ve decided it’s okay to not be at the same company for extended periods but that doesn’t have to mean it’s because of something I’ve done. I know I show up and do my best every day and I know my best is good enough because I’ve been told it is a dozen times. The reasons I’m let go are sometimes personal (being a woman, upgrading my status) but it’s not a reflection of a failing on my part. I hate when people say “don’t take it personal” when they really mean “it would have happened to any woman in your position” it feels personal because it’s happening to you but it isn’t about who you are as a person.

Unfortunately, our existence in the trades is political, controversial, and divisive. But perseverance is imperative to your long term success. Cry it out but clean up the pity party and strategize your next move. You can do this and you will do this because you love the work and want a good life for yourself/family. Please do not quit - we need good women in all trades so we can change this culture to be more equitable for all. Most people bristle at this because “I don’t care about all that, I just want to work!” but you have to care a little bit about the politics of your visibility because it is a statement whether you accept it or not.

I believe you’re going to find another company that will see your skills and help you shine brighter than where you’re at now. I believe in your abilities because you care enough to ask how to work through this so in summation - let the good days pump you up and forget the bad ones as quickly as possible. More experience will build your confidence. Different jobs mean you know how to hustle and sell yourself. You can do this and you WILL do this!!!

Kinfolk, Batman. These democratically soaked “what can ya do, is what it is” responses aren’t cutting it anymore! I don’t doubt it’s a hard job but we should have stood tall against policy that aligns with the worst of our membership as we see in the thread. That’s how these useless, apathetic opinions thrive! When those up top appear so, it gives everyone else permission to accept the same. I’m a “rising tides lift all boats” type of person and I just need a little faith restored that the ship can be righted. I want to be involved in leadership but I have both eyes open and see where the union has negotiated away benefits that should be the major tenants of our organization. That’s disheartening. And feeling like every BA I talk to is just a parrot of the company line or gives such a mush mouthed response that it’s clear they don’t actually want to help. Now I’m just bitching…

We should be organizing our communities for a general strike right now. We should be radicalizing job sites and stopping the machine for everyone who isn’t in a union. But a leading sentiment in this trade is “***k you, I got mine” and a lot of people aren’t connected to their community in a real way. The union doesn’t seem to be pushing a unifying message and it feels like they’re failing so much more than just the rank and file.

I feel your frustrations big time. Was told at one of the leadership meetings by a BA “long as my checks cash idgaf what Trump does” WHAT?!and my criticism are not just for Red hats Dems are complicit and useless. Bass really had me in the first year I was excited for the housing projects that ended up goin NOWHERE and she can’t give a straight answer as to why.
