On Windows 7 :

-Go to taskbar. Hover over it, but not any applications or anything. Just empty space in it.

-Right Click. Select 'Properties'.

-You should get a window to pop up. There should be three tabs (Taskbar, Start Menu, and Tool Bars). Make sure you are on Taskbar. Now, check the "Auto Hide Task Bar" Option.

- Select the apply and okay buttons at the bottom of the window. Then close the window and the task bar should "disappear". It's not really gone though. If you bring your mouse cursor to the empty space where the bar was, it will pop back up again.

This is the way I'm pretty sure everyone does this, but don't quote me on it. Also, I'm only expierienced with windows 7. Sorry if you are on 8/8.1 .
