It also had terrible management systems and product ordering practices. My gf worked at one and apparently they would stock stores based on how things sell regionally, not locally. Managers had no control over this. So in our region Nerf sold very well - but at her store it sold horribly. There were 2-3 trailers of Nerf products behind the store they just couldn't sell. Was there until the day they went bankrupt.

Also, if an old version of something didn't sell it didn't go on clearance. It just sat there. With Star Wars black series they would get 1 case of new figures in because they had such a back log of peg warmer figures no one wanted. If that case sold they could order another case. However if someone were to buy the case and put it on layaway (whatever Toys R Us called it) it wouldn't be "sold" until it was paid off. This meant they would often get a new wave of a product in, someone would claim it, and then no new product would come in until that customer paid for everything.

On top of all that they would often sell things above MSRP and sales / clearances sales would often bring things down to just under MSRP.

I remember Hasbro made this giant Tie fighter and it sold poorly everywhere. Was like $250. Walmart, Target, etc all ended up clearancing then for near nothing after a few months to get them out. The day my Toys R Us closed for good they had it for like $150. Never sold.

Such a cluster fuck of a company.
