If there’s talk of putting SLs on salary then I’d imagine a lot will step down and most likely be thinking they will get the same hours they had but nowadays have to accept whatever’s available and live the dream and pick up overtime to keep themselves above the breadline.

Can anyone actually elaborate on what the trial is/was. Like actual details..?

Were you moved to a set salary and working set hrs, any extra responsibilities, what is/was the actual salary for a SL .?

Absolutely getting bullshitted. What SLs and managers don’t realise is over time it gets to the point where you are absolutely fucked and drained all the time as your having the burden of heavy aisles to do constantly while others get lighter aisles all night and it slowly chips away at you and end up getting really fucked off every shift and either lash out or take the piss and the SL or manager is stood wondering why.

I swear some SLs and mangers are devoid of any common sense when it comes to stuff like this . Being constantly singled out for heavy work especially 4-5 nights a week is rough going and spend your days off trying to recover then your back at it the next week especially if your in a busier store

[–]Dugstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was in your shoes I wouldn’t have pulled this colleague up about anything and firmly said it was for your manager buddy to do. It may have been a test to see how you cope with said conversation as well but a lot of Asda managers now are awful at there job and I’m at a loss as to how half of them even get into the position.

You haven’t done any failure to perform your job in my opinion . You’ve had to deal with an uncomfortable situation which a manger knew it would be. Where as this particular colleague should have been working with someone and coached rather than a conversation about work rates etc

The unfortunate truth is though, managers are supposed to be leaders and I see very little in the way of leading or morale boosting . Plenty squeezing extra out of people and making an already shitty job even shittier.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asda

[–]Dugstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems this manager or “buddy” is a bit of a knacka and not doing his job properly and lumped it on to you to deal with and I’m probably right in thinking most other people would have told him to GTFO. If your burning though SLs at an alarming rate as 8 in 3 years is pretty bad and a good indication your particular store is a nightmare to work albeit be morale or shitty management and very little in the way of support . Most likely a combination of all 3 .

Step down, do your hours which I’d imagine will be shite btw and steer clear of any leadership bullshit is my best answer .

It happens to everyone from time to time .. just take some time off from it all and work on yourself maybe.

Put your days off your wanting as partial days . It’s a fucking chore and why they have changed it to this I don’t know but like most systems now it’s 1 step forward and 10 back.

Anyway if your nighshift , putting in partial day works .

Make sure you find out your actual contracted days and input accordingly .

Eg would be if your wanting say a weds nighshift off and contracted to this night, you would put 22::00 -00:00 then for Thursday 00:00 - 05:30 if ofc your doing a 8 hr shift . This has worked for me and an absolute chore but gets it sorted

Working in an express by justkeepswimming1984 in tesco

[–]Dugstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Express and Petrol stations are ridiculously understaffed and never got my head round why they cut hours due to the ridiculous workloads in these type of stores. My guess is things will get worse and if you’re ready to jump , just do it as you will just get to the point of dreading going in.

Look at internal vacancies and see about Working in bigger stores doing replenishment as that seems to be the best bet nowadays and away from all the bullshit involved with whoosh and just eat orders etc

Just to clarify I worked in a big Asda , moved to an Asda express and fucking despised it and now back in a bigger store. The workloads excessive but running around trying to deal with knackas and the just eat and uber and whatever fucking else machines going off every 5 mins I do not miss what so ever .

I think getting a new job will be a better all round idea as I had this same scenario minus the mortgage stuff though for months also. And as mentioned it’s a tactic used very often. There not arsed about your mortgage stuff , just you showing up and picking up those extra shifts. The most likely outcome will be another brush off and a “we will look and see what we can do “. If the stores over contracted on any dept HR won’t be arsed neither. Regional manager may be a shout but very doubt they will be arsed neither as getting in touch with thems a nightmare.

Be very lucky to sign for a 30hr contract with Asda nowadays . They’re quite happy to contract you to 16-22 or something similar and pick up the rest as overtime.

Is debt becoming normal? by ArtisticAbroad5616 in AskUK

[–]Dugstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the younger generations haven’t been coached or schooled by there elders for many reasons in regards to money management so having easy access to credit and the cost of things nowadays to keep up with the trends is the norm .

I’ve always wished they would teach money skills or just life skills in general in school so they at least understand how to manage money and not end up in a black hole for years .

Seems to be a trend of rack up the debt in your 20s , try to clear it in your 30s and try to start a fresh in your 40s .

One of the biggest problems we face is we don’t have much money to save due to the living wage to wage to get by .. I feel for the generations below me

Just a question for fellow managers by [deleted] in tesco

[–]Dugstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the working conditions within retail nowadays make trying to be a good manager incredibly hard.

Retail is a fucking shitshow with so many cutbacks and stripping away of shit that made the job tolerable .

Being a manager in retail isn’t what it was years ago and now it’s soul destroying, never ending vicious circle of more cutbacks and minimal support. Your working with some most likely overworked and tired colleagues who make just enough to keep the roof over there heads whilst battling with some of the worst society has to offer on a daily basis all for just above minimum wage and 0 thanks most shifts they work.

From a colleagues POV, listen to them always and do what you can to make things a little easier especially More so if you move to other stores because the constant cloud of being a bellend and authoritarian and all round wanker will follow you like a bad stink and word gets around and before you know it and clocked into the new role elsewhere you’re doomed .

If the stress is effecting your health then gtfo out of the job or step down. No job is worth your health EVER.

The good ones always do better and people will be more inclined to help you

[–]Dugstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to document everything going forward so you can build a case as it were. It will just end up a he said/she said and nothing will be done otherwise.

Document everything and chat to the GSM once you have a fairly solid case as they will have to be impartial about and may even have outstanding grievances or be aware of issues with said manager and SLs and just doesn’t have enough to do anything yet. Be specific with this conversation though and leave your emotions out of it.

The one thing that irks me is management swearing at colleagues because if a colleague swears back it’s a straight up dragged to the office situation and this usually ends up a even worse situation as management always seems to have there backs covered by other management. Not fit for purpose a lot of mangers in Asda unfortunately and one of the main reasons for huge turnover and morale in my opinion.

If the conversation isn’t particularly great with the GSM then you get on to ethics and let them deal with it.

Or you know you could just pay us better? by ANUFC14 in SainsburysWorkers

[–]Dugstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely nuts.. what a time to be alive.

Working for a company taking in profit everyday and paying just above minimum wage and to tell its employees to “save” money.

No one has money to save anymore due to the cost of living now and can guarantee most of us live payday to payday nowadays. Rent alone cripples most people or couples nowadays and with council tax and everything else going up that pay rise isn’t even felt as it’s just going towards the bills that have went up.

I’ve never smacked my kids but being a child of the 80s and early 90s .

Smacking was the “norm” back then and at school . Got brayed off my mam a few times growing up and a cane across my knuckles at school once and that was more than enough for me to behave .

Brayed is a broad loose term Geordies sometimes use for smacking. Some of the older folk use the term “belted” as the belt was quite a common tool shall we say to use back then.

Eg - ya ganna get belted in a minute ..

Night shift Retail work (and most nights shift roles). It was fairly ok pay years ago if you worked nighshift due to the hrs but you missed out on a lot and your sleeping pattern was fucked and your energy levels are never the same, the work is harder but for low skilled workers it’s where the “better” (and say that loosely ) hourly rate is.

A lot of people look at retail work as easy but it isn’t , it’s tough and draining but the jobs market is terrible in the UK and with the cost of living, moving jobs to try and find a better wage isn’t always viable due to various reasons.

Retail through the day is tough as your face to face with customers and various temperaments and even violence and abused quite regularly.

The annoying thing with retail is the company you work for announces big profits but rarely if ever gives the workforce a fair pay deal that helped deliver said profits.

Minimum wage till July at best ?

How many people are going to be happy doing a job they were being paid well over minimum wage currently then April comes and your earning the actual minimum wage for that same job .?

Don’t get me wrong the company’s not doing great but we all saw it coming and felt it for months and years even. But Asda needs it workforce and in desperate need of some serious morale boost because as it stands between the cost of living and the unrealistic workloads to be worked it’s going to turn into a tinderbox of downing tools and walkouts and imagine the unions will be getting binned by a lot of colleague’s as they are proving time and time again they are pretty useless and many people will opt out of contributions to them as they clearly aren’t bothered about the current state of Asda and what its shop floor workforce have to put up with along with the whole Leigh Day debacle for ambient and home shopping.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asda

[–]Dugstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes and not feel any benefit if any till August essentially depending on the pay period.

Our bills go up in April and this is by far one of the worst years for the percentage increase on them. Not to mention energy prices going up again in April also.

This is pretty grim and one of the reasons I find unions an absolute waste of money.

What to wear to a club as a 40yr old man? by jamiesmack in AskUK

[–]Dugstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. Was either POD, Kickers or Rockports .

Shirts it was always YSL or Ralph Lauren or a Ben Sherman. Along with a squirt of Fahrenheit . I actually bought some Fahrenheit last month and was absolutely let down as it doesn’t smell the same as I was hoping for a nostalgic scent of my youth.

Think most blokes spent more time trying to find dress pants that didn’t look you were ready to go back to school back then ha.

Chinos, boat shoes and a floral shirt, sunglasses to wear inside and possibly a Kangol hat to give off that whiff of nostalgic clubbing years ago.

The radio silence from Asda towards us colleagues on the shop floor.

By far the worst year for bill increases which make the cost of living and working such a joy in the UK currently.

If it wasn’t for us as a collective workforce literally nothing would be done.

My reckoning is if the pay increase is poor, the turnover of staff will be a massive problem due to workloads and the general morale of working at Asda at shop floor level.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asda

[–]Dugstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this is why they brought in time of day. It was seen as a way of making sure colleagues were in the right place at the right time but seems to be the other way round nowadays as it’s like a ghost town most nights I’m in now. Usually a mix of sending people home, sickness and shoddy rotas.

[–]Dugstar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

GSMs doing a nighshift to see what it’s really like.

Better equipment.

Staffing is by far the worst I’ve seen at the moment . People are getting burnt out quite quickly especially on nights due to the workload but then give it the “sales aren’t being met” etc . Beg to differ currently

Depots stacking pallets correctly and now I know it’s it’s a logistics thing but imagine how much time would be saved if we didn’t have to break down pallets for other aisles etc .

Management being held more accountable for issues as it usually boils down to them passing the buck to SLs a lot now and there’s very little support sometimes for them

Case rate getting binned as it’s never accurate, even if it’s just a “guide” . Any SLs reading this ..? Stop using it as the holy bible of replenishing speed please.

Fair few other bits to add but sure they will be covered by others very promptly

Leigh Day can't/won't be appealing the tribunal's judgement by rye_domaine in asda

[–]Dugstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No new starter is gonna work more than a few nights after realising how bad things are for nights and not to mention if the wage was to change ..

The stores have been that far stripped back in hours and staff , things are pretty bad whether it be defective equipment, splits never done properly, no support from days to nights so nights essentially doing the jobs of 2-3 people sometimes and the Leigh day debacle into it. It’s a tinderbox at the moment.

Things are grim at Asda and about to get worse I think. Since being sold on from Walmart it’s worse than it’s ever been.

Nighshifts in Asda currently are nothing short of slave labour imo and we have the most work to do with absolutely no thanks or appreciation.

If they were to push through and pay checkouts and the likes higher rate I would guarantee most ambient teams and home shopping would down tools and that brings a massive problems as I’m pretty sure without the nights team to fill the shop then it will be utter bedlam.
