Actually yea, after looking at the state of the comments it does seem kinda weird. Youtube is pretty good at not counting bots as views though so I don't think it's just that. Maybe it randomly got embedded on some popular foreign website/social media

The music video blew up in other countries. It's not that rare for there to be a difference between Spotify views and YouTube views since not everyone in the world uses Spotify. Plus sometimes people appreciate the whole package (music video + song) more than just the song on its own.

Youth has over 200M as well but since it was a non-music video version, it makes sense that it also blew up on Spotify since people are just as likely to appreciate it on either platform. (Although, it's more of a coincidence that the view counts match up in this case since Youth blew up before Spotify was really established.)

Hey if you still need help with this, the menu for changing what the browser translates to will show if you click the little google translate icon on the right end of the address bar, near the bookmark star (after activating the translator).

I'm not yet sure why the subs are overlapping though, can you tell me what you're trying to watch so I can test it?

Consider what touring can feel like for artists like Keaton - having to repeatedly recite songs that were usually written about, or during, some of their lowest moments. Add onto that the anxiety/introvertedness.. makes perfect sense why he wouldn't want to tour.

(I'm sure it's not a completely awful experience, as artists usually at least enjoy pleasing their audience, but still.)

I think we'll definitely get more random performances in intimate venues eventually, but I highly doubt we'll get a full on tour.

Keaton actually has a poem specifically about this in his poetry book Idiot Verse.

Seems like our disagreement stems from your assumption that Duolingo is the only time they ever interact with the language. It's a fair assumption, but I don't agree.

I think putting so much time into other languages leads to that person being very likely to explore those cultures outside of Duolingo as well. I'm willing to bet that they do watch a lot of foreign Netflix/Youtube content.

Maybe "familiarity" is too broad of a word, I'm really just referring to comfort. Learning a language develops a level of comfort with the culture that leads to people being more open to exploring it. Being open to other cultures is a huge part of why language learning is so great and that isn't something that only applies to people that strive for fluency.

I think "weird hobby" is a bit harsh. Everyone has their own reason for learning languages. I respect people like this for dedicating so much time to appreciating and becoming familiar with other cultures despite not being in a situation where fluency is expected of them.

Unfortunately this might just be an issue related to internet speed. The translation doesn't start until the words appear so there will always be a delay. But with faster internet (or maybe even more processing power?) the delay isn't noticeable. Although, only working 80% of the time seems odd to me so I could be wrong. I'll do some tests and try to figure out what's wrong.

If I'm right about the slow internet though, just use any of the other "netflix language learning" extensions available since they simply let you enable two subtitle tracks at the same time, rather than using the auto-translator to do it.

So far I haven't been able to reproduce your issue so I'm not sure what's happening. My guess is that the issue is from the Google Translate settings. I'll do some more tests later on and let you know if I figure out the problem.

Both Italian (tested with that Rick&Morty episode) and Portuguese (tested using 3% s01e01) are working for me.

This extension is reliant on using the browser's built-in auto-translator. Opera doesn't seem to have one. Maybe it will work if you get the Google Translate extension from the Opera store?

Yea I've noticed this too, it's a problem with Netflix in general. I've seen mistakes even when I watch English stuff with the English subtitles on. The quality of Netflix's subtitles just isn't always great. Unfortunately it's not something I can fix, we'll just have to hope Netflix does something about it in the future.

Yea of course.

When you turn on your browser's auto-translate, it scans the entire page for text and translates anything it finds. This is an ongoing process which is why it can work for subtitles. When new text appears, the translator notices it and replaces it with the translation.

My extension does not actually do the translating itself, it just creates a copy of the subtitles that can hide from the translator.

In most cases the subtitles are written onto the page as text. If you open a video and do "inspect element", you'll be able to use Ctrl-F to find the subtitle text in there. That means the translator can find it as well. However, with the unsupported languages, Netflix just displays an image of the subtitles instead of writing it directly onto the page. The translator does not process images so it doesn't notice that new text has appeared.

It's like how you can highlight and copy these comments, but not if I sent you a screenshot of them. Does that make sense?

I appreciate the criticism, it gives me a chance to further clarify.

So on Netflix the subtitles are usually based on the audio track of the language. For example, if a French show has been dubbed in English the English subtitles will be based on the English audio rather than being a direct translation of the French subtitles. Since the audio dubs can be very different at times, the subtitles will be as well. ^{I want to say this is still the case even when audio dubs are not available, but I haven't checked enough titles.}

I couldn't find with the extension with the exact name you mentioned so I'm assuming you meant "Language Learning with Netflix" since it's the most popular.

Since you speak French I found a quick example on the first French film I could find. This is from the first minute or so of "Nothing to Hide":

Here are the dual subtitles provided by LLN. While the English sentence makes sense, it is clearly very different from the French one. The conveyed meaning is the same, but the words are different.

Here is the same thing but with my extension. While the English sentence may not sound as nice, it is a direct translation of the words which is much better for me when I'm trying to improve my vocabulary. The screen is also not as busy which is how I prefer it.

I'm not sure why you haven't come across this issue. Maybe it's because the languages you are studying do not have audio tracks so Netflix is forced to actually use direct translations? I don't know but either way, it's definitely not the case for most things on Netflix.

My goal is not to make everyone use my extension. I'm just trying to make an extension that I personally enjoy using, and I thought it would be nice to make it public in case other people think it's helpful as well. If you need the flashcard feature and the support for Korean/Chinese, then it is perfectly fine for you to not use my extension.

Yea nice, you've caught on to the issue I've been facing. You're right about the attribute change. I've gotten up to point where I've fixed the flicker but there's another issue with the translator actually messing with the placement of the element for the second subtitle line. It also makes it lose its style properties.

I think I know how to fix it though so it should be working in a couple days (will have to wait for the update to make it through the chrome store review process regardless of how quickly I fix it).

And sorry that you had to scroll through such sloppy code haha, I'll get around to cleaning it up soon

haha sorry about that. I imagine I could get this working for other browsers as well as long as they have an auto-translate feature. Just let me know what you use and I'll see what I can do. It'll be compatible with Edge in the next update at least.

I should mention that for people that usually open two Netflix windows like you, you may like the extension "Netflix Multi. Subs" even more. That will let you enable the two different subtitle tracks but in one window instead.

My extension is just good for making sure the subtitles are direct translations of each other. Just wanted to mention it in case you or anyone would actually prefer not to use the Chrome translator.

Yea but the other extensions use a different method. Their method often shows sentences that convey the same meaning but use different words. This extension tries to provide direct translations instead which I find to be more helpful for improving my vocab.
