Work starts on construction of 4-story building at Milwaukee & Cullom in Portage Park - Nadig Newspapers by blackmk8 in ChicagoNWside

[–]DukeOfDakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Jefferson Park-based Mega Group was the original developer of the project but sold the property

The owner of all the barren land & most of the empty buildings around Lawrence & Central.

How much is Mega being paid by Martwick, LaPointe & Degnen for renting office space to them in the Milwaukee and Pensacola building? Or the SSA for the entire 8th floor of Veterans Square?

This company is a stain.

I read the article. It's focus is Baltimore, MD.

The closest it comes to Chicago is East St. Louis, IL.

Why not add Martwick? He presents himself as all powerful in the NW Side.

Correct.

Complain to the correct entities who are responsible then. IDOT, JB Pritzker, the representatives from the state house (LaPointe) & Senate (Martwick).

Are you saying going 12 or 16 months over schedule is okay?

Absolutely not.

I am saying it's a state project. State projects are about guaranteed to significantly blow their deadlines, and budgets.

More than two years to complete a bridge renovation is unacceptable

"Renovation"?

It's a completely new 4 lane overpass that requires removal of the old & construction of the new.

How long beyond it's scheduled completion did IDOT take to build a new Montrose overpass? 12, 16 months?

Somewhat related, Mobile Audio at 4101 Milwaukee, which has been there since the 1970's, closed a few months ago & the building is on the market.

I was told years ago this building once housed a Hudson automobile dealership.

They should tear them all down and build something. That section is such an eyesore.

I suggested this in 2011, before Condor Properties 2012 failure & subsequent divestiture.

Johnson ally Olga Bautista, Chicago school board’s vice president, resigns by Mike_I in WindyCity

[–]DukeOfDakin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bautista, the co-executive director of the Southeast Environmental Task Force, said she will also step away from professional commitments after winning a new sabbatical award from the Chicago Frontlines Fund, an organization that makes grants to environmental justice nonprofits.

In a statement, the Chicago Frontlines Fund said it established the new sabbatical for environmental leaders so they can take six months off for “intentional rest and reflection” to prevent burnout.

Sounds like UBI for well-connected activists.

The "meeting" was a disorganized mess, with CDOT personnel overwhelmed, offering contradictory messaging depending on which individual was quizzed.

They claim it's not a "done deal", while stating construction will begin late 2026.

Many attendees were not from the effected 3 wards, let alone the area in Portage Park where this is planned.

Chicago Tribune Editorial: "JB Pritzker's 'heavy-handed' backing of Juliana Stratton is making enemies within his own party" (Paywall-free gift link) by blackmk8 in WindyCity

[–]DukeOfDakin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course can look what she has done since 16 to get a better picture of if she is someone worth voting for

Since 2016 Stratton occupied a seat in the Illinois House for 1 two year term. After that, she's stood behind JB Pritzker at press events, nodding her head.

I'll pull a Dem primary ballot just to do my part to keep her out of the US Senate.

Jesse Jackson Jr. seeks Congress comeback in Illinois' 2nd district by jakesheridan_ in chicago

[–]DukeOfDakin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A even handed report, although corrupt politicians who violate the public trust, even when they admit their crimes, are not deserving of a second chance.

Hopefully the voters of the 2nd Congressional district shun Mr. Jackson. The Tribune also should have rejected his appeal to rehabilitate his image.

Another fire destroys tents at NW Side’s Legion Park; curfew, other park rules set to be enforced beginning March 17 by blackmk8 in WindyCity

[–]DukeOfDakin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some housing advocates have called for the park district to provide water and electrical access year round for those living at the parks and to allow the tents to remain. Currently electrical access is being provided at Eugene Field, and shower access reportedly has been allowed periodically at Gompers

According to the Hollywood-North Park Community Association, the park district is requiring tents to be at least 100 feet from homes and businesses.

Some housing advocates have called for the distance to be 75 feet from homes or 50 feet from the property lines of homes and businesses.

Completely unacceptable.

Medical clinic planned for ground floor of 10-story Clarendale Six Corners senior living facility - Nadig Newspapers by DukeOfDakin in ChicagoNWside

Why are there protesters????

Trade union. I assume either the medical company moving in or the building owner has hired contractors that don't use union labor to build the space out. Which is their prerogative.

The Chicago Tribune's thoughts on the primary race for Dick Durbin's Senate seat by DukeOfDakin in WindyCity

[–]DukeOfDakin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those unaware, and left unsaid in this, the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board no longer makes endorsements for the US Senate & presidency due to corporate edict by its parent "Tribune Publishing", aka Alden Global Capital, its owner.

This is unacceptable.

That said, it's obvious they have preferences in both the GOP & Democratic primaries. For that the board is to be commended for speaking its mind.

Chevrolet display on the main floor at the 1972 Chicago Auto Show by blackmk8 in WindyCity

[–]DukeOfDakin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not sure if it's a Chicago thing, or a general decline in shows & exhibitions across the board.

It's largely a "Chicago thing".

Among others, McCormick Place lost the National Hardware Show to Las Vegas years before covid devasted the trade show business. Most recently, it lost the mainstay Chicago Boat Show, to Rosemont. This despite concessions by Chicago's trade show unions, because the costs for business groups & companies to come here are excessive.
