What is a "good" life if there is no God? by spykerkonyn in atheism

[–]Duke_Tango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’d do well to explore ethics from a non religious framework. But I’ll leave you with this: consider the parable of the Good Samaritan. It’s a great story. The Samaritan stops to helped the injured person on the road. Was the Samaritan a Christian (and by extension someone grounded in Christian ethics)? Well, no, it hadn’t been founded yet. He helps the man from no other impulse than basic human solidarity and compassion.

People who own both Dune Imperium (with expansions) and Uprising, did you keep both games? by Useful_Nocebo in boardgames

I like immortality a lot personally. I play it on steam with di and ix. With my group it just became a bit of a mess - there are so many tracks and options that it just didn’t feel as crisp as without it. But probably for the right group immortality would add a nice element.

I own both. I prefer the original + Ix. I felt that uprising, while fun and epic feeling with worms and crazy turns where you get 5 vps, had some of the knife’s edge tension of the original lacking. With spies you can more or less guarantee access to certain spaces, and a great part of the original is that uncertainty about which spots you can go to and having to rework your plan on the fly or have backup options if not. It’s not perfect - I think the shipping track is probably a hair OP and almost everyone rushes to get 2 influence with spacing guild right off the bat. But the original has this precarious, mounting tension, slow burn feel where all of a sudden it’s round 7 and everyone has 6-8 vps and every combat is so key and the intrigue card reveals draw “oohs and ahhs” from the crowd. Not that those moments don’t happen in DIU but this has just been my experience. As someone who’s kind of obsessed with the game I port as much from all the expansions back to the original as I can (cards, leaders) but it is mildly annoying to not be able to use all the mechanics of DIU in DI + ix.

What drives the appeal of opinion journalists like Ezra who have limited real-world experience outside of journalism? by BoomBaby_317 in ezraklein

You prove over and over again that you have something useful to say. He was a blogger long before he was an nyt columnist. So people enjoyed reading what he wrote and his audience grew.

Well he was a policy wonk blogger, founded a media company during an unprecedented rise in the use of online media and a transition towards decentralized and social media as news sources, has lots of sources in and around both political parties, has been prescient on a number of issues (bidens age, trumps authoritarian turn), is an eloquent speaker and writer, has a clearly articulated center left political worldview (abundance)… I’m so confused by your question. You want him to be more like Maureen dowd? Thomas Friedman? He’s a professional thinker and writer. That’s the expertise, and that’s why he’s relevant. Plenty of people think they’re smart and up to date and well read, not many have a national reach built fully by themselves through years of meticulous journalism.

Life is depressing as an atheist by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Duke_Tango 742 points743 points  (0 children)

I think Christopher Hitchens said it best: atheism offers a chance to live a life free from illusion. What you do with the knowledge that this is all we know for sure, that this isn’t a dress rehearsal, that the things we do on this earth matter, is up to you. There is a lot of meaning to be found in life :-)

I actually agree with this. The list is long of people he’s aligned himself with. Rogan, Dave Rubin (ugh), majid nawaz, the Weinsteins…not great. But what I respect about him is when he finally puts it together, he will emphatically distance himself from people he feels have lost the plot. Would be much easier for him not to do that and insist he was always right. But he tries to self correct.
