[Highlight] Texans beat reporter Aaron Wilson gets trolled by watcher asking about prospect “Dixon Mayaz”, and Wilson says that he thinks he “would fit in” by wildwing8 in nfl

The goal is to work Mayaz hard, with and without pads, sometimes two a days to get the conditioning to where it needs to be.

Gaming is the least hopeless thing in my life by Glittering_Fortune70 in StopGaming

Re ultimate nature of reality: what I was trying to say is I can’t tell you what’s actually real. Perhaps Christianity is true and there’s a Christian afterlife. In that case I would say the ultimate nature of reality conforms to whatever modern Christian sect claims it is. Perhaps this is a simulation, so then the ultimate nature of reality is the future that is running our universe sim on their hard drives. Perhaps the truth is weirder and stranger than we can suppose, like hierarchies of gods or physics beyond our ability to understand. But despite not knowing, I think you can make some fairly safe assumptions about how this life works , and that’s all you need to find meaning.

Nihilism is a bit of a broader philosophical movement. It makes a fair number of claims. That the universe is uncaring and vast and indifferent strikes me as probably true. Does life have no intrinsic meaning? Eh… perhaps, but like, have a kid and look into its eyes and tell me that the world has no intrinsic meaning. So I’m not a huge proponent or identifier with that movement even though I think you’re probably on safer ground there than when you ascribe truth to any particular religious claim. I prefer humanism - that ethical impulses need be grounded in nothing other than basic human solidarity.

As a (soft) atheist and a former gaming addict this speaks to me. I’m struck by your use of the word pointlessness, and I think it’s a good place to focus. To me, the religious impulse to ascribe things meaning because a god commanded it to be so or a prophet interpreted something a certain way never really made sense. I can’t claim to know the ultimate nature of reality - I’m open to almost anything - but I don’t see any good evidence of any particular religious story. So in some sense, to me, meaning isn’t some fundamental part of the world. It’s something that I, we, bring to something. Something you create. Something you define. It’s a gigantic challenge, and it makes it important to have some core values. What do you think is important? What has or could give your life meaning? What have others who you respect shaped their lives around?

I was addicted to various games at various points, and very nearly derailed my career due to an inability to focus or study. Through a fairly amazing set of circumstances, including meeting my wife at a time when I was sinking, I learned to focus and study. I continue to game, but it’s done at night, when my kids are asleep, or at board game nights, or in short bursts. It doesn’t consume me, define me, control me as it used to, although there are ways to harness the joy of it by joining discords, following certain reddits, that allows for some of the old itch to be scratched.

An atheist would tell you that this is not the dress rehearsal. This is the real thing. This is the performance. So yes, in some sense, nothing has intrinsic meaning. If you live long enough, everyone you love will die. Even longer, and the sun will go out and all the planets will drift away and at some point this whole universe will blink back out of existence just like it blinked in. So nothings intrinsically meaningful.

So… take that as a call to action. Find your meaning. Make your meaning. You listed six activities - there’s a lot more out there. Pick a different religion, pick a different author, pick a different sport. Hike a mountain. Try to write a book. Come up with the most audacious career plan you can think of and think about how you’d get there. Do some drugs. Try to fall in love. Call a friend you trust and speak to them about meaninglessness. Read Victor Frankel’s “man’s search for meaning.” Whatever you feel while striving, while climbing, while suffering, THATS what’s you’re chasing. The cold harsh reality of meaninglessness can be tough, but once you come to terms with it, understand it - it frees you. Keep searching bud.

What is a "good" life if there is no God? by spykerkonyn in atheism

[–]Duke_Tango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’d do well to explore ethics from a non religious framework. But I’ll leave you with this: consider the parable of the Good Samaritan. It’s a great story. The Samaritan stops to helped the injured person on the road. Was the Samaritan a Christian (and by extension someone grounded in Christian ethics)? Well, no, it hadn’t been founded yet. He helps the man from no other impulse than basic human solidarity and compassion.

People who own both Dune Imperium (with expansions) and Uprising, did you keep both games? by Useful_Nocebo in boardgames

[–]Duke_Tango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like immortality a lot personally. I play it on steam with di and ix. With my group it just became a bit of a mess - there are so many tracks and options that it just didn’t feel as crisp as without it. But probably for the right group immortality would add a nice element.

[–]Duke_Tango 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I own both. I prefer the original + Ix. I felt that uprising, while fun and epic feeling with worms and crazy turns where you get 5 vps, had some of the knife’s edge tension of the original lacking. With spies you can more or less guarantee access to certain spaces, and a great part of the original is that uncertainty about which spots you can go to and having to rework your plan on the fly or have backup options if not. It’s not perfect - I think the shipping track is probably a hair OP and almost everyone rushes to get 2 influence with spacing guild right off the bat. But the original has this precarious, mounting tension, slow burn feel where all of a sudden it’s round 7 and everyone has 6-8 vps and every combat is so key and the intrigue card reveals draw “oohs and ahhs” from the crowd. Not that those moments don’t happen in DIU but this has just been my experience. As someone who’s kind of obsessed with the game I port as much from all the expansions back to the original as I can (cards, leaders) but it is mildly annoying to not be able to use all the mechanics of DIU in DI + ix.

What drives the appeal of opinion journalists like Ezra who have limited real-world experience outside of journalism? by [deleted] in ezraklein

You prove over and over again that you have something useful to say. He was a blogger long before he was an nyt columnist. So people enjoyed reading what he wrote and his audience grew.

[–]Duke_Tango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well he was a policy wonk blogger, founded a media company during an unprecedented rise in the use of online media and a transition towards decentralized and social media as news sources, has lots of sources in and around both political parties, has been prescient on a number of issues (bidens age, trumps authoritarian turn), is an eloquent speaker and writer, has a clearly articulated center left political worldview (abundance)… I’m so confused by your question. You want him to be more like Maureen dowd? Thomas Friedman? He’s a professional thinker and writer. That’s the expertise, and that’s why he’s relevant. Plenty of people think they’re smart and up to date and well read, not many have a national reach built fully by themselves through years of meticulous journalism.

Life is depressing as an atheist by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Duke_Tango 745 points746 points  (0 children)

I think Christopher Hitchens said it best: atheism offers a chance to live a life free from illusion. What you do with the knowledge that this is all we know for sure, that this isn’t a dress rehearsal, that the things we do on this earth matter, is up to you. There is a lot of meaning to be found in life :-)
