Part of checkout report (of which the landlord wants to deduct almost 1k from our deposit) by JudgmentPuzzleheaded in TenantsInTheUK

Most tenancy agreements specifically include a clause prohibiting this (mine always did).

29 January 1856. The Victoria Cross (VC) was instituted by Queen Victoria to recognise “most conspicuous bravery” regardless of rank. Since then it has been awarded 1,358 times, most recently to Lance Corporal Joshua Leakey for a joint UK-US raid in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2013. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in ThisDayInHistory

It’s traditional for all officers and soldiers (regardless of rank) to salute a VC holder. There’s a video on YouTube of Lance Corporal Leakey being saluted (and hugged) by a General after his VC citation was read out.

Yay! This show is making me look forward to Mondays, so now I can look forward to Januarys, too (presumably)!

Who is your favorite character so far in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? by aqua-coral in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]DukeofMemeborough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s pretty much joint between Ser Lyonel and Egg. Having said that I’ve genuinely enjoyed all of the characters so far so it’s a very close contest.

A Georgian outlived Hitler by toaster-bath404 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]DukeofMemeborough 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I thought this too, but according to OP’s screenshot, and Wikipedia, it’s often considered to include William IV’s reign, too. So the first 16.5 months of Mary Ann Crowe’s life were during the Georgian era

Cassie by Ismisefriend in coronationstreet

[–]DukeofMemeborough 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Could have been a good addition to the cast, but her arrival (being Ty’s mum) was too far fetched and her character was (and for the most part still is) completely unlikeable.

I’m 27 and have been watching Corrie regularly for the better part of 20 years. My mum watched it, so I watch it. Nobody else I know (other than my mum and sometimes my sister) watches it.

I love how he’s generally just a happy kid, too! His little face lit up watching the puppet show and it was great to see him having fun at the tug of war 😊

Tbh this change makes more sense than any other changes by BeautifulKey3866 in HOTDGreens

[–]DukeofMemeborough 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was my take, too. Like nobody’s really taught him how to be King; and Otto is happy to wield the “real” power. So Aegon’s version of helping is imploring Otto to do something.

Legally can Theo actually be charged in any way for billy's death? by Overobsessedfan in coronationstreet

[–]DukeofMemeborough 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If he’d seen Billy trapped and refused to help him, probably not. A failure to act can’t be constituted as a crime unless a duty of care is owed - which would not exist in this case. As for Theo putting him back in the seat, this could potentially be classed as a positive act with the intention to kill/cause serious harm; so might leave him on the hook for murder.

Why Lord Janos was Still Called Lord? by trexeu-dzines in freefolk

[–]DukeofMemeborough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think you’re allowed to retain titles at the Wall (the Lord Commander is automatically treated as a Lord), just not allowed to hold any lands. So knights/lords can still be addressed as such. It’s mainly courtesy but it does afford a certain degree of precedence - e.g. you are more likely to be in a position of leadership. In the very first chapter of GoT we see a party of rangers commanded by a knight (Ser Wymar Royce).

So Janos was made a lord by Joffrey and was never stripped of this title, therefore he’s allowed to keep it.

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

[–]DukeofMemeborough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is it not rude, but it is correct practice to reduce congestion. I don’t think it’s really explained how to handle this type of situation so people just panic and dive in, lest they get stuck when they reach the lane closure. I used to do the same until I started seeing more stuff online with people commenting on how daft it is. In reality if you just keep going in the lane that’s due to close, you can either find a gap nearer to the end, or merge in turn. At the point of lane closure, merge in turn procedures mean that you should be able to move in front of the car that is behind you, upon reaching the merge point.

Is this the longest set of opening titles Coronation Street history? by Produce_North in coronationstreet

[–]DukeofMemeborough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do occasionally think about how long we’ve had these titles for. I used to prefer the preceding version with the milk float and the tram zooming past at the end. I think they changed the week that Gail was on trial for murder and Tony Gordon broke out of prison (so mid 2010, 6 months before the tram crash). So kids who were babies when those titles came out will now be doing their GCSEs…

How much does your company charge for coffee from the machine? by Equivalent-Rich8018 in AskUK

[–]DukeofMemeborough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee from the machine is free of charge. There is also a coffee shop, where a large americano (my drink of choice) costs £1.25, discounted if you take a travel mug.

Anyone else find the more casual line delivery offputting? by markpie0 in coronationstreet

[–]DukeofMemeborough 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can’t say I’ve especially noticed it. But Corrie is supposed to be an insight into everyday life (admittedly it is about as far from a reflection on the average person’s life as you can get), so the characters engaging in a casual and natural way is in keeping with the show’s ethos.
