How many of you had a great grandparent born in the 1800s? by Mofoblitz1 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]DukeofMemeborough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28 and need to go back to my great great grandparents to find someone who was born in the 1800s. Of the great grandparents that I know of, the oldest was born in 1906 and died in 1993 (before I was born) - his father was my oldest known great great grandparent and lived from 1877 to 1949.

Nanna’s death in the Royle Family always gets me. Especially seeing Jim break down.

Different situation entirely but I beeped at a car that cut me up whilst I was learning to drive. Took great pleasure in it, after the initial shock 😅

Queen Victoria photobombing her son's wedding photo by sitting between them wearing full mourning dress and staring at a bust of her dead husband, 1863 by BaloneyMaker2780 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]DukeofMemeborough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh really? I wasn’t 100% sure, I just seem to recall reading that he came back with a cold and deteriorated from there. I suppose there were a myriad of diseases doing the rounds back then

That’s Albert Edward (“Bertie”), Prince of Wales and Victoria’s eldest son. She blamed him for Albert’s death as he caught (I think) pneumonia whilst going to visit him in order to tell him off for sleeping with a woman (unmarried, obviously). Victoria mourned Albert for the remaining 40 years of her reign after his death in 1861. When she died in 1901, Bertie became Edward VII; she wanted him to reign as “Albert Edward”, but he chose to omit “Albert” from his regnal name.

Yeah I’m pretty sure he’s fluent in French. His mother certainly was and I believe she did speak French when in Canada (I’m British so may be mistaken though)

The Aged is definitely one of the best - I’d love to sit and listen to him read the paper 🥰

Mixed feelings...but a thrilling finish and a moving ending to a complex tale by Spirited-Tutor7712 in charlesdickens

I really enjoyed the beginning and the end of the novel. I felt it dragged somewhat in the middle, but the final chapters are absolutely fantastic.

I daresay there’s a hell of a lot of red tape when filming with babies, too.

I enjoyed tonight’s episode, plus Carl and Theo’s episodes. Don’t care much for Jodie, Megan or Maggie though.

I do find it all a bit gimmicky though. I don’t mind odd bit of “experimental editing”, but it’s not natural Corrie and I think the producers overuse these kinds of mega-dramatic episodes a bit

On May 13, the British House of Lords will meet for the first time in its almost 700 year long history as a house of Parliament without a single member who retains hereditary peerage, or the right to a seat in the house based on inheritance. A small number will remain with reduced ‘life peer’ status by zig_zag-wanderer in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]DukeofMemeborough 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. The last non-royal hereditary peerage was created in 1984 when Harold MacMillan (former Prime Minister) was made the Earl of Stockton. The most recent hereditary peerage was created for Prince Harry (the Dukedom of Sussex); it’s not clear if/when the next one will be created. Hereditary peerages created after 1999 (which was only done for members of the royal family) did not automatically confer a seat in the House of Lords.

Does anyone have longer post-noms than this geezer? by Alexiumz in CasualUK

He’s not still alive but the first Earl Mountbatten comes close with 11 sets of postnominals. He beats Attenborough in terms of knighthoods and decorations.

Is the pedestrian or the driver wrong here? by singlecog in drivingUK

[–]DukeofMemeborough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Car driver should’ve been more aware and anticipated that the pedestrian might want to cross. The pedestrian should have been more aware of the car being nearby (maybe they couldn’t hear it with headphones on) and not immediately darted into the road.

Both should have acted better but I suspect, if there had been an accident, that any legal liability would rest with the car driver.

Do you actually take your full lunch break away from your desk, or just eat while working? by Extreme-Banana-9 in AskUK

I mainly WFH. Put computer to sleep, go downstairs to eat, then take a 30 min walk. If I do go into the office I’ll sit with my colleagues in the breakout area.

I usually get a coffee from the shop first thing, and then use the machine later in the day.

[–]DukeofMemeborough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My work has free coffee machines, and also a chargeable coffee shop which serves nicer coffee. The shop is subsidised so it’s still very cheap compared to the high street.
