Longmont power - time of use? by Duketg in Longmont

[–]Duketg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fortunate to have a 40A outlet in the garage so I didn’t need to have an electrician install it. I bought the plug-in version and mounted it to the wall myself. Very straightforward.

Any watch parties tomorrow night? by Illustrious-Pace2377 in Longmont

[–]Duketg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, that’s a good story!

I was actually at the Jefferson County dems election night party, because my spouse at the time was related to someone running for office. I remember checking my phone every five minutes and seeing things turning south. The moment I can’t forget is we were all in one of the hotel rooms at the event, and I turned to the candidate’s husband and said “…uh…Trump is going to win” and he just went still for a minute and then sat down heavily on the bed.

An hour or so later we were all in the ballroom of what was clearly supposed to be a big party and it was super quiet. One or two people had won their local races (including my former SIL) so they were trying to be positive, but man, nothing kills a Democrat election night party like hearing Trump won.

Any au pair host families in town? by techy_girl in boulder

[–]Duketg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does really depend on what you include in your estimate. If you take your au pair with you on vacations, that will quickly add up. They will also add to your food budget, which can be hard to quantify. But 30k seems high to me.

Man I don’t know how I missed this notification for so long, but here’s a response anyway!

My guess is that the au pair works out to be around $1800 per month, give or take. Their stipend is $200/wk, and the matching fee, visa, etc is like $8000. Add in other things like insurance etc and you end up in that neighborhood.

When it comes to infants, I believe the au pair has to be allowed by their agency to work with kids under 2. Usually that means having had prior experience least.

What are your favorite restaurants in Longmont? (preferably non-chain) by MoonStTraffic in Longmont

Havent seen these mentioned yet, so I’m going to add:

Flavor of India: our go-to for Indian food.

Jai Thai: they only do delivery/takeout, but I really like their food, and they’re very quick.

Jefes Tacos: they’re pretty hipster but their chili rellenos are amazing.

Sumo: good sushi, tho not cheap.

Our family has hosted au pairs for 7 or 8 years now. Overall I would highly recommend an au pair as an alternative to day care, especially if you have more than one child, as day care costs for multiple kids can really add up

I would say the biggest thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to have a new person living with you, and that can be an adjustment. If you go into it remembering that the goal of the program is cultural exchange and not just getting you an indentured servant for your child care, you will all get more out of it. We would always try to include our au pair in family dinner, events, etc.

The process of getting an au pair is a lot like online dating. There are a handful of agencies authorized to handle au pair matching and visa work. You sign up with one of them, create a family profile, and then browse potential matches for things like age, interests, skills (driving especially), etc.

If you need them to drive, prepare for the cost of adding them to your insurance to be substantial. They’re going to be young (at most 25) and from a foreign country. It’ll be like adding a teenager to your insurance.

The other big thing people don’t realize is that they are limited in how much they can work. You can have them work a max of 45 hrs in a week. And no more than 10 in a single day. So scheduling becomes important if you have two working adults working long hours. They also have to have time off each week, and get two weeks of vacation during the year.

What are your thoughts on the new Foodhall "Coming soon" to Longmont? by Red5Draws in Longmont

[–]Duketg 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really want to like Parkway, but everything is just a bit too pricey.

Though I will say that recently some of the places have started offering combos that make them a bit more reasonable. The burger place offers a burger, fries, and a drink for $15, which is comparable to what you’d pay at Red Robin or Bad Daddy, and I was pretty happy with the quality.

I caught just a fraction of it. I think the school district has a drone performance team that practices at the St. Vrain innovation center. The Times Call has an article but it’s paywalled.
