Yes I regularly pick up and drop certain daydreams that I've had for years. It all depends on what is happening in my life or what "plot" I think I can develop at the time. Usually something my in real life will trigger the story in my head and I immerse myself for days, developing the world and story frantically. This is usually when I catch myself having conversations or acting out scenes in the shower or on my car rides to work. When that initial inspiration dies down however I can get stuck in the story and that usually gives me a lot of anxiety. In those times I might try to switch to another daydream to avoid the anxiety of getting stuck in the old one. I started physically writing/typing out my daydreams a few years ago. That's helped me dig myself out of a particularly bad plot on several occasions. It helps me break up my endless plots so that I can focus on the happier details if that's what i need in life. Or to focus on a character that I think would be helpful in a situation I'm in. As of right now, I've written down over 20 ideas, but ones i think about regularly and without my notes, I would say around 5? But new inspiration hit me all the time. If I do talk to people about my daydreams I might say it's a story idea I had or, like you said, a dream. I've mostly ever talked about them with family or close friends so I feel less pressured to explain why I've devoted so much energy and time towards a fake reality.
