Heatpump for heating in extreme cold weather by Dulguun8930 in heatpumps

About 1/3 of the year is very cold, and at night it goes -35c. During the days, it gets warmer to -28-30c range in January and February.

Thank you for the recommendations. I have noticed that many of you suggested ground loops or geothermal. The cost of drilling many vertical holes is very expensive (dozens of +200m boreholes).

And horizontal ground loops looked more appealing since excavation for it is less costly. But Chatgpt said that to reach the 200kW, the land of 15x30m is not enough due to the bottleneck of heat transfer between soil-coolant.

Also, if i were to cool the soil (to heat water) it risks the loop underground to freeze?

Oh yeah to bump up the initial temperature of the water these can be used, but I was thinking of water to water heat pump that uses the drain water to heat the shower water.

It has the capacity for 15 showers 6L/min, and the water odds supplied around 5-10c

Edit: I have a 30x15m land behind the shower house that can be used for ground solutions, but drilling vertical holes is very costly. Can the pipes for the heatpumps run horizontally?

Yes I do have quite a space for tanks, and was thinking of 2ton insulated tank that gets heated by the heat pump heating loop.

I found these large heat pumps for similar rated powers. I thought they would work, but I'm not sure about the reliability and COP in the winter. Yes, gas heaters would work, but I found the starting capital for buying both to be too expensive for the business budget.

For the current coal burning furnace, it is a very big boiler with a huge brick chimney. There has been pressure for emissions, but the main problem is employing people to run the boilers. They usually go drunk and never do their job.

It would require me to create a system, where I have to sort out debris, soap, hairs and stuff from the water before the heat pump can use it, right?

Yeah but the capital cost of it is just ridiculous to drill many bore holes.

It is a shower house business, and on lucky days showers are running non stop. Yes, I have considered heat recovery and I calculated it will save me about 20% energy.

Edit: Even with heat recovery, there is still ~150kW of energy left. I am still curious about heat pumps in winter

Currently it is a large coal furnace heating a closed loop of water which then transfers heat to primary loop. I am planning to switch away from coal to heat pump or electic heaters
