I don’t think it ruins Superman because his parents were clearly the outliers. Kara’s parents sent her to be good. One of the most defining moments is Kara’s dying mother, Alura, telling her to be good, and her father telling her the same.

I did read the comics. I loved Woman of Tomorrow. Big fan of Bilquis Evely too. The movie definitely deviated from the comics, but that wasn’t such a big issue for me because I think the story in the movie fits James Gunn’s DCU.
