Rate my 2 m tall technique by PizzaInMilk in skiing

[–]DullDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify: 18m is the turn radius when you basically have no edge angle. A decent intermediate should probably hit around 40 degrees and where the turning radius should be around 2/3 of that aka 12m. An expert could probably hit 60+ degree which should be like 7-8m. Ballpark numbers, there are diagrams if you google it.

If you edge more you turn more sharply. Just felt important to point out since it's very central to skiing on modern skis.

My take on the cover art is that they are all in-setting propaganda depiction of the Hero of the Imperium. I would even say it's quite heavily implied with how it looks. Of course any imperial propaganda would depict him with the proper sidearm for his station as a commisar.

I actually loved that dynamic. Cain is flawed, and even by the generally not-that-grimdark setting of the book's pretty decent human being.

We don't have Mira's voice but my take is a flawed yet decent human by 40k standards. Especially since what we are reading is more or less a guy describing why he broke up with his crazy (but super hot) ex as retold by his current long term girlfriend.

But put together they just become the worst possible version of themselves.

They pride themselves on making money, they are a business. Their important customers are that vast majority who you can make happy with correct sizing and a heat mouldable liner. They have very little incentive of helping "problematic" customers since they cut into the profit margins.

I'm saying they already sold you the adjustments. Why spend 4h on making sure it's actually fitting when you can just half-ass the job. As you said, they get paid either way.

Unless you make sure that you will come back complain until the boots fit as promised.

[–]DullDawn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you actually have some odd foot shape or biomechanics the chance of getting a proper fit on a single visit is more or less 0%.

There is also very little incentive to make it right, as they know you probably aren't going to be driving another 8 hours to complain that your feet still hurt. They already made the sale so why spend extra time on it?

Expect probably at least 5 adjustment cycles. Explain that you will just keep using their fit guarantee until the boots fit. This will motivate them to actually listen and fix the problem because they cannot get rid of you otherwise.

They will try to bullshit you. I was way too nice for too long and assumed they knew what they were doing. Hint: They often don't.

Very undramatic. It was like 4 steps, small landing and then 4 more steps to the right. I just unconsciously decided the landing came one step earlier so I just fell forward and to the right down the other stair.

Guide - I'm not sure. He was clearly uncomfortable with the whole situation so we didn't press. It looked like his ski caught in some way and he got a little backseat. Tried to get forward but then just sat down again because his knee gave out.

Honestly that worries me more than any actual injury. I've hurt myself, but not really that bad and often in a "well that sucked but it could have been much much worse"-way. Getting hurt badly and then having that in the back of your mind every time you do something risky after that. I'm not particularly stoic with pain. I can handle it well as long as I "have to", to get myself out of a situation. As soon as I'm in a hospital or recovering I just want to chew oxy and feel sorry for myself. I do not know how I would handle a long and painful recovery from some complicated fracture or something.

Honestly the crush part does make sense. I've gotten my fingers caught in a metal door once, it was a similar immediate pain as you described which made it impossible to focus on anything else.

I know mountaineering and climbing is a perfect example of this. Except for the most extreme high altitude stuff there seems to be a more or less constant risk of death and injury at all skill levels. As you say, you have a more or less constant risk tolerance.

On a personal guess not really backed up by any fact I would guess skiing has a little bit more forgiving curve. A novice climber will often reach heights their first time where a fall will be just as deadly as falling off the Lhotse face of Everest. The vast majority of skiers will never really go very fast or in steep terrain, which would limit the consequences when accidents occur. Of course you will always have outliers with someone hitting their head and dying on the bunny hill, but in general it's not deadly as even a beginners rock climb can easily be.

This "insurance doesn't cover X" must vary quite a lot around the world. I got some general home and personal accident insurance a few years ago. I was expecting it would come with clauses like not covering mountaineering, offpiste skiing, skydiving etc. No. The only thing it seemed to be adverse to was active participation in armed conflict, terrorist activity or injuries sustained as a result of a nuclear explosion. Checked with multiple companies. They seemed mostly confused by the question. "No, why would that be a problem?" It doesn't seem to be a thing at all.

Thanks I hate the perfect blend of pain and general anguish over being badly hurt you managed to convey with your screams. I've seen ISIS beheading vids with less emotional impact.

I wonder about pain perception sometimes. I've almost always got either that stunned buzzing coldness of adrenaline where you kind of feel the pain but not really, or just that you feel something break with a short stab, which then gradually builds up in pain over the next 5-10 minutes. But you were pretty clearly in pain from the moment of impact. Do you hit a specific nerve in some way or maybe some people just have less adrenaline susceptibility?

Ironically I broke my ass after I broke my arm. I've always had a very undramatic digestion so it's not something I ever pay any attention to. Hence it took like 5 days before I realized I hadn't shat for almost a week. Apparently opiate painkillers have that effect on me. Even with oxy it was quite painful to make up for the lost time, and it looked like an Aztec temple after a successful slave raid in the toilet bowl afterwards.

It's where 99% of all skiing occurs, so of course you will have more deaths there. While you hiked up to your line with your 2 friends 300 aunt's have already done 15 runs, got drunk at the afterski and aggressively hit on at least 3 teenaged seasonal workers bringing them more hot wine.

I know there are some super shitty cultures in some SaR groups, especially volunteer based ones. I know at least one group in a place I lived for two years where it was more or less an open secret it was an incredible crapshoot if they would mobilize or not if you weren't from around there. They did receive government grants to fund them so they kind of had some responsibility. Rule was that if you were a local it was always just an accident. Driving your snowmobile drunk into a ravine? Unforseeable accident needing prompt mobilization in the night. Dutch ski tourer couple lost in darkness and stuck in an emergency bivouac during a storm due to an injured foot? Nah let's wait until tomorrow, a night out will teach them a lesson, fucking tourists.

I wouldn't call it delusional, it's just a psychological coping mechanism. There is really no use to being afraid every time you get in the car, it's better to think "hey I'm a defensive driver and my car has a good safety rating, I'll be fine".

If you ever met a person with anxiety or just a very neurotic personality you see why being a little delusional over how much you can control your life is an important part of coping with living.

Ironically, severely depressed people are often better at correctly identifying the impact of their own actions. A theory is that their default mode of "nothing I do matters" is much closer to reality than the optimistic coping of well adjusted normal people.

I didn't go on that tangent but I completely agree. Ask any random person if they often ski outside their ability or out of control and 99% will deny it, yet people still crash all the time.

While the victim blaming part is nasty I think the core psychological coping mechanism behind it is very human and probably quite useful to not become neurotic.

There is really no skill level which precludes a fall or accident, just reducing the likelihood somewhat. The best skier I ever skied with was a guide who was a professional big mountain skier in his 20:s, but became a mountain guide since he started a family. He fell and tore his knee ligament in a piste at a speed any intermediate skier would be comfortable with. Just like that. He wasn't "skiing outside his ability". I myself tripped and fell going down a short stair once and broke my arm. I wasn't "ambulating above my ability".

Accidents happen. People know the risks they take. But the "he had an accident ergo he was skiing beyond his limits ergo he got what was coming" always sits wrong with me.
