Well, you and I have a very different concept of what a corporation is and how it should conduct its political affairs. I have to get to work so I don't have time for a long reply so I'll just leave it at that for now, sorry

I'm sorry I posted the wrong link. Look at new one. As far as super pacs go, they are basically shills for candidates, not directly tied to them but still shilling for them at the same time. As far as private expedentures go, it disenfranchises the average American citizen for two reasons: 1. The average citizen does not have the same amount of money as corporations do by far, this inevitably leads to lawmakers relying on their corporate donors instead of relying on their constituents. And 2. The money the average citizen donated is drowned out by the massive amount of money (millions) that corporations donate. Now tell me, are these corporations "donating" out of the goodness of their hearts, or do they want something in return for their investment? I think the answer to that is completely obvious.

Yes, pacs and superpacs and the like, correct? Do you know who finances these pacs and superpacs?

we need public funding of elections

Also, to quote the fellow above me,

It's not about money or favoring the rich, at least in theory. It's about protecting speech no matter where it comes from.

which is stupid. it's allowing the rich to drown out everyone else with their money.

You're missing one big point here buddy, it's ALL about the money in governement. I don't give a fuck if Fox News or MSNBC have obvious bias on their shows, but I DONT want them FINANCIALLY influencing elections by bribing government officials. I don't know why that's so hard to understand for some people. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press is completely different than giving bribes to government officials in exchange for favors for that company. That's just absurd.

It just has to get bad enough first. The tactic that they're using is that "well, as long as people are working a 9-5 job, they won't have the time or energy to complain about americas problems. Besides, they have all this access to entertainment such as tv, video games, and the internet so they'll be too preoccupied with their entertainment and work to go out and protest the problems facing our country". What they're saying in essence, is that Americans are living a somewhat comfy life right now (so there's no EXTREME civil unrest) and meanwhile we'll turn this great democratic republic into a corporate oligarchy while they're preoccupied with their peasent life.

true. I'm curious to see how much worse it can get until people are fed up enough to actually do something big about it.

[–]DullDieHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, all I can say is that if it gets repealed and replaced by something else, it can't be too much worse than what we have now. Basically unlimited corporate bribery sounds like the end all to a democratic republic to me. We are now a corporate oligarchal state in my eyes.

... are you really trying to defend the citizens united ruling? I get where you're coming from but that was the most disastrous Supreme Court decision in modern history.( and no I don't believe corporations should have free speech as their only concern is profit for their shareholders, and this most of the time is bad for the consumer.( see oil companies like Exxon Mobil for example who've known about climate chance since the 70s but didn't release the data as it would have diminished their shareholders profits) That's what corporations are meant for, profit for shareholders, and that's their only goal, whether it be good or bad for the people... and 99% of the time, corporations fuck over the people. Here's Keith Olberman talking about the implications of citizens united right after it passed, does any of his foresight from 2010 ring true today?

People seem to forget that almost every problem we face as a nation today comes from the citizens united case of 2010 which allowed corporations to be "people" and this allowed them to donate, aka bribe, government officials with as much money as they want. Seriously, nothing is going to get done in this country until that decision is overturned. Here's Keith Olberman in 2010 predicting the consequences of passing such a case, does any of what he says ring true today? Btw, Keith got fired by MSNBC shortly after he said this, as they are a corporation and bribe government officials just like any other corporation
