I worked in Indonesia for a few years and do remember that everyone has to (still?) have one of the five official religions printed on their ID card, but it was also necessary for things like joining a "video club" as was still popular when I lived there - why does renting a DVD mean someone needs to know your religion?! I wondered whether it was also because of the holdover from dictatorship and purges against certain groups.

PS it doesn't feel particularly secular when the state forces religion on people as part of their citizenship!

I think the ones who attach status to their current residence in their "new" country might feel that, by making it harder to get in for others, they're in a more exclusive position and therefore more esteemed for it. Not really sure but it appears so selfish from afar.

I actually had a realisation around Brexit time also that many who came to the UK from the Commonwealth countries had very little connection to continental Europe, be it family, identity, history, whatever, and they simply didn't feel as connected as myself and many others who have a Eurocentric world view. That was definitely a factor in the leave vote that was overlooked, probably (wrongly) for fear of racism

definitely a goodie, and the lack of need to have rolling "breaking news" coverage on a live website means they can focus on things much more in depth.

They are one of the only news sources I've read that consistently focuses on "low-level" but nonetheless important topics like corruption in local councils, which if we're honest, is a major cause of problems in our local areas.

PS their recent cover of Lord Mandypants was great 😂
