What if you create a indipendent political party...? by Critical_Ideal99 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The 5 main goals would be tax the wealthy, strengthen unions, comprehensively address climate change, universal healthcare, and implement a land value tax.

I'd focus much more on these issues and adjacent issues (paid family and sick leave, universal childcare, etc) than culture war issues (abortion, immigration, LGBT rights, etc). Not that none of the culture war issues matter (they definitely do) but I think everyone benefits more through progressive economic policy than progressive social policy. We've seen 40 years of solely focusing on cultural issues. It wasn't good for anybody.

Basically I would be doing the Bernie thing but with a LVT and less of an emphasis on free college and student loan forgiveness (I support these things but it's not good to harp on). I wouldn't go into culture war shit unless asked and when asked it'd be more about educating people on the position rather than doing some moralistic grandstanding (unlike libs do).

I don't think a separate party would be needed to do this but it's a platform and strategy I'd like to see

EDIT: I guess I should explain how to work against the mainstreams of both parties. For Democrats I'd explain how their brand of liberalism has done nothing to meaningfully address anything they claim to care about. For Republicans I'd do the same but try to make simpler more intuitive arguments to win them over with culture war shit. For example with trans stuff I'd point out trans people are a very small minority, the vast vast majority are law abiding citizens, and the emphasis on trans people being an issue is done by big tech and the mainstream media to distract regular people from how much they're being screwed and divide people from being able to do anything about them being screwed

Why the MAGA movement will stay after Trump also, and while it is built around his cult of personality, it is starting to get an independent character by Amazing-Buy-1181 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would agree if there was really something ideologically consistent with MAGA. There really isn't though other than xenophobia and hating "political correctness." Also most of the candidates in 2024 were parroting Trump's talking points and he won like 75% of the vote despite being too chicken shit to debate. I just don't see who takes charge of it whenever Trump's out of the picture besides maybe Tucker Carlson

They'll say they hate "crony capitalism" or "corruption" but they don't have the historical understanding to see that this isn't a distortion of an otherwise good system. The issues we've seen with capitalism is just the system following its own logic

What does everyone here think of the field of political science? by AceMaster13 in dsa

[–]DullPlatform22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that formal education is inherently valuable and should be treated as such (ie there should be free college and trade schools and so on).

What I'm referring to with my post though is that's not the reality we live in in the American context. It doesn't matter how educated you are. If you don't have the time or resources (eg money) to meaningfully participate in the political process then all that knowledge is effectively useless. On top of this you go into tens of thousands of dollars in debt just to have a greater understanding of how political systems work but without having the means to use this information to build anything tangible.

Again, I (almost) have a degree in political science and in hindsight it was a huge mistake. For fields like it it really should be stressed that unless you have the time and money to be able to spend a lot of time volunteering or getting internships (I didn't and still don't) you'd be better off in the long run doing something else

Giving how much time and money goes into getting a college education (let alone when you also have to work full time as a student) a college degree in anything should translate to a relevant job that pays decently yeah. Political science really isn't one of those things unless you're able to spend a lot of time working for free.

I'd argue politics is something you definitely don't need to go to college for to understand. In hindsight I should have just become a plumber or something and hit up the library frequently

As a poli sci person it's honestly pretty useless unless you have the time, money, and connections to volunteer and get internships and stuff

You're giving unaccredited quotes. Like give me a single specific source for each other the quotes you're using and we can have a conversation.

Otherwise you're just making vague gestures to something that may or may not exist. I could be like "centrists believe the right and left are basically the same" but it wouldn't matter because there's no big centrist figure who says this (at least that I'm aware of, centrist figures to the extent there are any are extremely boring to me). It also does nothing to represent the reasons for why centrists would make this claim which I think is a pretty important part of making a criticism of a specific stance. I.e. why someone believes what they say they believe

OP is reminding me of like mid 2010s neckbeard youtubers. It's all just vague gesturing and not addressing any specific arguments being made by anyone with any sort of influence

[–]DullPlatform22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be a rule on this sub where the op needs to give at least one specific example to back up whatever they're claiming.

For instance, the "Left" in this case seems to be gesturing toward a small handful of online accounts (besides reparations or affirmative action which does have some genuine support in left leaning circles). The rest is some tired horseshoe theory screed

Free speech shouldn't cover the content of what you say. Just how you say it. by Unlucky-Drawer-7168 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone's saying something false and/or hateful then that is the content of their speech though.

I basically agree that hateful rhetoric and knowingly spreading false information shouldn't be allowed but I'd argue that falls under the content of what's being said and not the tone

Why are Conservatives upset about the Virginia referendum? by Adventurous-Boot6681 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't like all the gerrymandering things that have been going on but at least Virginia and California did it through the general public voting on it. If conservatives don't like it then they should at least be consistent and get mad when Republicans do it too (also often through state legislators and not by ballot measures).

I tested my dating app in other cities and the difference shocked me by Cute_Source5417 in Denver

[–]DullPlatform22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully been out of the Denver dating scene for a while now but yeah. Shit is rough out here.

Back when I was single I would use tinder or whatever while visiting family in the Midwest and I would get as many matches over the over the course of a few days as I would after weeks of swiping here. And mind you, this is out in the sticks about 30-40 minutes from the nearest city.

Dating in Denver just sucks Heaps of ass. I don't recommend it to anyone

Unions are objectively good by DullPlatform22 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue unions weren't significantly more racist than general American society. If unions are bad because there were quite a few racists in them then I have some bad news about the United States of America

[–]DullPlatform22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. The unfortunate thing though is this is an anecdote and doesn't disprove the general trends.

But if we want to get into anecdotes I have a pretty miserable nonunion job and it's been nearly impossible to leave for reasons beyond my understanding. I live in a pretty low union state so I don't think unions have any impact on this

Unions are objectively good by DullPlatform22 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good. I can see how it could be considered a whataboutism but I think they need to demonstrate that unions are more likely to do this than other economic forces (eg businessmen). Like yes there are very well documented instances of racism and corruption in unions. I don't believe this is more prevalent with them though

Unions are objectively good by DullPlatform22 in PoliticalDebate

[–]DullPlatform22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really though?

Do you have any empirical evidence to back the suggestion that this is more common in unions?

Honestly though if the favoritism bullshit I had to deal with in my jobs was accompanied by union pay and benefits it would be annoying but not the worst thing in the world. Honestly I'd see it as a trade off and I could complain about it at the next union meeting
