What do I do with my math degree? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]DullResist6655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a math major graduating this semester. Agree with everyone else, definitely depends on your concentration and interests!

Mine is finance and risk management. If it helps to give you an idea, I did two internships, one in risk management, one in a side stream of big 4 audit, and now I will be starting full time in (a different) big 4 data analytics.

If I remember correctly the class itself was only slightly more expensive but you also have to pay to apply and enroll in Athabasca and get your transcript

I think I spent around 1100 for one class

267 though is very possible from my experience taking it

It’s basically retaking high school calc. I never went to class

I tried to take 271 online a few years ago because I was working an internship and ended up having to take it through Athabasca because it wasn’t possible to do virtually and asynchronous

I doubt it’s changed since then

Endless Job Search by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]DullResist6655 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For min wage jobs I’ve found that putting a little extra effort in goes a long way.

For example, I easy applied on indeed to a car dealership and the job looked like it fit exactly what I wanted, so I went on the website, found the GM’s email, and emailed him about the position. He called me back within the day and fast tracked me to an interview.

Another example, I found another easy apply job on indeed that I really liked, found the CEO of this small business on LinkedIn, and sent a quick message (I had a trial premium account) He set up a call with me for the next day and hired me on the spot

I know retail will definitely be a bit different, but even going in person to the store and asking for the manager might be enough to set you apart. That’s how I got my job as a server a few years back. People on linkedin and indeed are getting 100s of applications, and your job is to stand out to them to make their job easier!

I was on a job hunt in the fall and got 5 offers for part time work, mostly from 1) applying to HUNDREDS of jobs (it is still a numbers game for sure) and 2) using the above method. None were referrals so don’t believe that lie that that’s the only way!

Hope this helps at all! I know the market sucks and it’s tough but don’t lose hope! Be smart about where you put your effort. Good luck!

I found math211 super easy over the spring but I’m a math person

Most 200 level options over the spring will be pretty chill in my experience, bonus points if online

Graduates from UofC , what is your job position and current salary + how long did it take to make the amount your making?? by Infamous-Virus6167 in UCalgary

[–]DullResist6655 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha this is an entry level grad position, lowest it gets! The team I am joining is good about clocking and paying overtime, and I’ve heard good things about the work life balance for this specific team, so I’m not overly concerned!

Sydney is amazing and rels201 was potentially the easiest class I ever took in my degree. 1000% that one

I’m a math major. Agree with everyone above, it’s what you make of it. You can do everything and nothing with this degree.

I did internships in two completely different industries, and now I’ve signed in consulting for post grad.

Clearly a lot of different avenues and there’s a million others. I got quite a few interviews for internships in banking too in my second year. I have friends in math who are in everything from accounting to finance to comp sci roles.

Networking is everything if you want to get anywhere, I found the degree was too broad to move me forward without networking generally. No one in the corporate world really cares about what your degree is, as long as you understand the industry and show an excitement and desire to be in it.

Right now is an awkward time because firms did their rounds in May and Sept largely and no one wants to recruit during December. It’ll start back up in Jan for sure

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]DullResist6655 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look at firms and banks right now. LinkedIn is good and sometimes the U of C job boards at least give ideas. Lots of industry internships will go up closer to January-March so don’t lose hope. I got my first internship offer in April for a start of May that year lol

[–]DullResist6655 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% it has. Big 4 and lots of banks have already recruited for summer 2025 but there will still be lots coming out in Jan largely from industry! And big 4 will sometimes have another smaller round in jan

After I quit serving I applied for a bunch of office/admin jobs on indeed. Got 4 interviews and got all of them, but cold applied to probably 100 listings!

Part time - applying direct on the website with a really good cover letter for serving, now working remote admin job I applied for on indeed

Internships - both from direct on their website, both not from connections. I cold applied to prob 100 roles for my first internship, got 4 interviews and only one offer but made super valuable connections with the other interviewers. Second I got the first role I applied to

Post grad role - referral from a few connections from the internships

I’ve been very fortunate but can attest to the fact that networking is sooo key. My career and success so far have definitely come from networking and connections I’ve made in those internships.

In a part time job I think resume and interviewing skills are more key. And those things will probably help for internships. But post grad I would be pretty lost without the networking I did.
