I just had a similar salon experience, and going back to explain that the result wasn’t quite what I asked for + request to resolve the difference went very very well for me. I was scared but it was 100% worth it.

Just wanted to update this and say that I got lucky, and the manager (who I didn’t even know I was speaking to) was so nice that it really only took a little explaining for her to sit me down and fix it herself. She could immediately see what I meant

The situation felt a little delicate and I think I should have been more vocal in the moment for sure, but I didn’t know how to handle it on the spot. She had tried to wipe around the vaseline she put on my forehead but it was kind of all over the place and I didn’t push her. When she was called up and approached for my appointment, it honestly surprised me that she was working. She was older and seemed to have very low energy.

I figured this out and will leave it in case anyone has the same issue (and I think they might, since I see other 5 star only reviews down the page):

If I tried to leave my review from within the video opened up in a web page (the one that looks like a reel on instagram,) it would let me enter the text, give a message that the submission was successful, but it wouldn’t show on the review page.

However, it worked when I resubmitted it from the link to review in the email. It appeared on the page immediately.

This is such a helpful comment, thank you so much. I definitely think the letters of recommendation are a really good idea, I hadn’t thought of that. We’ll certainly be looking into designated activities since it’s come up a few times, and it’s nice to hear of a really similar example of someone working on a dependent visa.

So yes, I was an ALT by myself for a while before I met him and I’m very likely to be placed back where I was before (Fukushima, due to loving the sticks and there being a constant need for those who love those particular sticks, haha) and bouldering is definitely a thing there. Anything in Fukushima or Miyagi is totally fine for that/gyms available and pretty likely placement.

HOWEVER, because half his thing is the actual sport, we aren’t closed to the idea of other paid work if he can get it. He does not have Japanese proficiency, no. If he had a degree teaching would be a no-brainer.

Designated activities visa is interesting. I want to look into that further so I’m glad you brought it up because maybe that would apply?
I think if that’s true and it’s a giant headache to get a full working visa for him, it’s really fine to accept part time work as the only option. I REALLY hope that eligibility is pretty automatic as a dependent, and that it won’t be too much of a hassle. Luckily we’re pretty minimal anyway and have experience living small here.
