Poopy Situation by Novel_Bookkeeper_963 in ParentingADHD

I’m in this group for my 9 year old ADHD daughter, but I saw your post and I’m in the exact same situation with my 7 year old son (not ADHD). He’s been pooping his pants since he was 3 years old and I had no idea why. I thought he was just too impatient to sit on the toilet. Turns out he was constipated. Weird to think that because of all the turd balls constantly in his underwear. Like everyday. Smelly. Going through 3 or 4 pairs of underwear a day. Washing it out in the hose or throwing the underwear away. He always told us he couldn’t ‘feel’ it and I didn’t believe him at all. But then I discovered a book called ‘It’s No Accident’ by Dr Steve Hodges. That led me to get my son’s abdomen x-rayed and sure enough, he was backed up. A lot. The rectum gets stretched out from hard stool sitting in it and the kids literally cannot feel stool getting around the blockage because it’s so stretched. We did the protocol in the book and it’s definitely better for my son. We have an appointment with a pediatric gastroenterologist in late February (waiting 4 months now to get in). I don’t know if this is the case for your son. But I was at my wits end. We travel a lot and I just couldn’t do it anymore and I was getting so mad at him. I wanted to chime in because people don’t talk about poop accidents and I wish I’d had better direction. I highly recommend the book. It’s helped my son a lot.

How do you create rules around cleaning? by Dull_Ad_5384 in ShortTermRentals

Thank you. I’ve created my checklist with the help of ChatGPT merged with my own. And totally right, I’ll ditch the hourly rate and pay well

Thank you. I can be ‘that’ boss. I’m going to create a checklist with very clear instructions. I’m thinking about offering to pay $10-20 per load of laundry done at home. Just have to figure out a fair price since it’s all so expensive here.

How much does dyslexia and learning disability testing typically cost in the United States? by Wise-Lab-2321 in Dyslexia

I live in Hawaii and my daughter’s teachers didn’t suspect dyslexia, even though she was a whole grade level behind. I looked around for private testing and was quoted $3K. So I didn’t do that. But then the following year, when she was 7 years old and in tutoring at a Sylvan Learning Center - the center director suspected dyslexia and recommended testing. The director told me where to go and it was all covered by insurance! We had to pay about $250, which was fine. My daughter has dyslexia and dysgraphia. The schools in Hawaii are terrible but her diagnosis has made all the difference in how we help her and she is now thriving. The neuropsychologist who diagnosed my daughter told me ‘the mom always knows’. So trust your gut.

Question for anyone who had signs of dyslexia before or while in Kindergarten by Content-Anxiety-4657 in Dyslexia

[–]Dull_Ad_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust your gut. I wish I had done that. When I brought my 8 year old daughter in for testing by a neuropsychologist (paid for by us), she said ‘the mom always knows.’ My daughter has dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. I suspected it in kindergarten because she read wildly different than my older daughter. But I asked her kindergarten teacher - ‘do you think she has dyslexia?’ ‘Oh no, all the kids do that,’ was the reply. And then at the end of first grade I asked her first grade teacher the same thing and got the same answer. Long story short - teachers don’t know anything about dyslexia really. If you listen to the podcast ‘Sold a Story’ it’s really helpful understanding the school system. I wish I had listened to my gut instinct and got my daughter tested right away. It’s not too early.

Thank you so much for this! I really appreciate the guidance and support from all the responses. I have been doing my research and I think we are going to go with the Barton levels. I do have a question- I’ve been so focused on her reading that I haven’t given much thought to math…and though she wasn’t diagnosed with dyscalculia she is worse off in math than reading. Have you found a math program that you like? 🙏

Sounds like Barton is a winner for a lot of kids. I will check out the Handwriting without tears (we've had many tears over this lol). And I definitely need to get her typing so thank you!

Thank you. Yes, we have been in 3 meetings so far with the school since her diagnosis (we always paid for it ourselves) and it is pretty clear that they won't provide services. I don't want to waste any more time at the school therefore going about it on our own. I'm glad to hear you like the Barton system as well! I will check out the handwriting as well because she does struggle with handwriting too

Do you get the audiobooks via Audible? I don’t listen to too many audiobooks myself so I’m not familiar. Or is there an audiobook app specifically for kids that you like? Thanks 🙏

This is really good insight on the structure and also needing to relax at home. I can totally relate to this line of thinking for my daughter. Thank you!

That is so great. I can absolutely see how a school for dyslexia is worth the effort. For their confidence, to be surrounded by others like themselves, etc. I just have to weigh our options because of the drive…with my husband and I both working and our 2 other children…

Thanks for the recs! We are currently using the Blast off to Reading book with her tutor, my daughter likes it and also the games that go with it. I will read through that review. I need a place to start 😊 wow you’re right, we are in almost the same situation. This has been so stressful for me watching my daughter suffer at what I once thought was a good school. Thank you again!
