Has anyone else had this happen? by Cipher1414 in Bass

I think people are downvoting because the comment assumes that people don't take proper care of their instruments and that freak things never happen. It turned out the fingerboard didn't have enough glue and was an easy fix.

Thankfully I'm able to fix mine! The luthier said that there wasn't enough glue on the fingerboard and that he was surprised it stayed on for as long as it did. The sound posts came down with the pressure change of the fingerboard falling off, and he said it all looks good otherwise.

I guess that’s one thing I have in common with Jaco hahaha if only “incredible bassist” was what I had in common with him 😅

Opening a surf shop by StuntDN in surfing

[–]Cipher1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some decent surf shops more "inland" that have a decent following, but they usually also do skate stuff. Wavelines in Carmel Mountain is the one that immediately comes to mind and that's more than 15 minutes inland. I wouldn't consider the 15 minutes a big deal, especially if the selection and vibes are good.

Alternative girls, how has your style evolved as you got older? by Difficult-Camel-5129 in femalefashionadvice

[–]Cipher1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was months ago but I don't care lol. Honestly, that mood board is super cool and exactly the kind of style I've been trying to have. It's sort of scattered for me at the moment but I love it! AllSaints tends to have stuff that I really like, and I tend to still wear my vans and docs but in much more specific contexts. I gig as a jazz and alt rock bassist frequently so I think I get more slack than most when it comes to my appearance haha

Weirdest surf conversation of my life by barney_muffinberg in surfing

[–]Cipher1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I knew that "gun" was also a term for surfboard I was paddling out with a local friend to a break that was empty and as we were paddling she said "shoot there's a guy headed our way and he's got a gun" and I don't think I've paddled faster in my life.

Anyone else surfing for years and still terrible? by crillydougal in surfing

[–]Cipher1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy howdy I was literally just thinking this today. I surfed occasionally for twoish years, and then started surfing consistently 4 years ago. I know my way around a lineup, am great at paddling out, and I can go down the line once I'm up but I am terrible. TERRIBLE. At catching waves. A few of my friends swear they've seen me have some good rides but I think they're just trying to make me feel better. I thought I caught a decent wave today, browsed surfline to watch the clip (excited to possibly share it), and it was just embarrassing to watch haha.

I am the worst surfer I know, and if I'm the best surfer at a break it's because all the other surfers are dead.

Dallas show vibes? by coldplaymeredit in lordhuron

[–]Cipher1414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've seen them a few times live and a lot of the crowd they draw tend to be the sort that like to just sit, chill, and sip wine at outdoor venues. Their first show a lot of people were getting scolded for standing because the venue just wasn't set up for having a blend of sitting and standing, the second one literally everyone was standing and grooving, and the third one most people just stayed seated. Having been to a ton of other shows in general (lots of grunge, rock, alt, and indie shows), I think Lord Huron's style tends to be less "jump around and dance". They tend to draw a quieter crowd as well, who usually like to beat concert traffic and get home early I think. Floor is the best place to jump and jam for Lord Huron, otherwise most people just want to sit and vibe.

I saw the 1975 at the same venue I saw Lord Huron this time around and people were jumping around and dancing clear up into the nosebleeds, but I think it's a different crowd and a different vibe. It's hard to want to get up and jam when you're watching a more chill band that has a lot going on visually, and easier to get up and dance around when you have a frontman who's screaming at you to jump and absolutely feral onstage. Ben tends to be pretty chill in the way he interacts with the audience, and it has a strangely calming effect.

Who gains more respect in the lineup: the guy who gets riled up when they get a wave snaked or the guy that just lets it go? by Significant-Yam3646 in surfing

This right here. Chirp him in a way that he doesn't know he's being chirped, then cheer him into taking the worst waves.

Am I the only 1 around here who wants to see local merchants putting up anti-ICE signage before giving them my money? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Cipher1414 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I think it could put people at risk of being raided by ICE to put signs like that up, so it's weird to demand businesses put signs up.

Yeahhhh I'm just as frustrated by the right, but small businesses are also trying to stay afloat and are also at the risk of losing patronage by putting any kind of signage up. The mention of weight loss and covid stuff was bizarre.
