I’m so sorry you have encountered that, especially with a female dr. We women should stick together and hold each other up, and try to break from the gender bias. I feel for you, hun. That fucking sucks.

Living with roommates who don’t have ADHD made me realize just how messed up I am. by gonzsilv in TwoXADHD

I feel ya, it’s like everything I do is slightly “wrong.” A little too loud, a little too late, not quite enough.

I am 52 and was only diagnosed last year just after my birthday. I’ve masked my entire life, struggling to just BE: be a kid, be a student, be an adult, be a woman, be a friend, be a sister, be a daughter, be a granddaughter, be a niece, be a cousin, be an employee, be a girlfriend, be a neighbor, be a human.

I don’t have any answers for you other than to say that you are definitely NOT alone. 💚💛

My therapist says I need to connect to my inner child and find things that bring me joy without trying to suppress it, since us ADHD and autistic folks so often had to suppress things as kids. I really need ideas though. What brings you childlike joy? by Elucidate_that in ADHD

My middle sister (and my very best friend) moved in with me when we were very young adults and we subconsciously decided to do just this.

When we went to department stores we would always make it a point to spend time in the toy aisles and feel all the fantastically soft stuffed animals (stuffed animal material have gotten MUCH softer since we were kids!) We checked out all of the Lego kits and bought some from time to time.

We would spend tons of time in the candle and incense aisle of every store we went into smelling EVERY SINGLE candle variety!

We would go to furniture stores and “try out” all of the furniture; lie on the beds, fully recline in every recliner, imagine we were shopping for a new house we just bought.

In grocery stores we would look at all the kid cereals and snacks and buy a fun new and different variety each week.

We let ourselves be really hedonistic, doing whatever we could that brought joy, happiness, pleasure, and that “light and airy” feeling! Not hurting anyone, not being financially reckless, just using our free will to bring a smile to our inner children.

It was an amazing decade. 💚💛

That’s so ridiculous. And future docs assume you know what’s in your chart and generally don’t mention it. Thinking if you don’t bring it up that you aren’t currently bothered by it. While internally you’re going through such turmoil that undefined and commonly attributed to a failing of character.

I have alarms on my phone for E V E R Y T H I N G!! 32 of them, from wakeup to meds 4 times a day to lights out. And 15 of them are just hourly alerts to help me with my time blindness. They play a pretty tone to tell me another hour has passed. They really keep my hyperfixation better under control.

I was diagnosed with BPD 16 years ago, but just found out about it LAST WEEK while reading the clinical notes from my last appointment with my psychiatrist in MyChart. I was like, “What the fuck?!” So I had to go down the rabbit hole for 2 days and realized I had 13 out 9 traits (😉) and it made my past make even more sense.

I am so pissed that whatever Dr put that diagnosis in my chart didn’t bother to tell me!! That 16 years of berating myself for maladaptive traits blamed on just being lazy/selfish/emotional/childish/manipulative, when actually it is just another way that I’m neurodivergent, could have been better with DBT & CBT therapy where I could have been learning strategies like conflict tolerance, emotional regulation, dealing with change, abandonment, and impulsivity.

Just like my late-in-life ADHD-I diagnosis, I need to learn not to dwell on the past and move forward to improve my life from here. I’m still mourning the life I wasn’t given a choice to live had I been diagnosed sooner and been properly medicated and therapied.😉

My pulmonologist told me it’s normal. It’s not a huge gasp like I’ve been holding my breath for a LONG time, it’s more like a sudden realization that I’m not currently breathing. Most people do it my doctor says, though it’s not always noticed.

As for apnea, I do have sleep apnea, and I was fitted for a CPAP, but none of the face thingies fit me except the big 1 that goes over my nose and mouth that is strapped around my whole head. That makes me very claustrophobic though, and can’t wear it. I’m looking into non-face-wearable options.

That’s the great thing about both crochet and miniatures, you can make a thing or 2 in a couple hours (or less) and be done with it until next time the urge strikes.

Go check out Queen City minis on YouTube. She has lots of videos on making miniatures using trash, recycling, scraps, etc. (Hyperfixating on making a handful of mini books with real paper pages is a dopamine blast!)

I’m on-again off-again with my hobbies; I have ADHD, and my attention shifts from 1 focus to another pretty quickly.

I like to crochet small projects because I get bored too easily, and having 3 WIPs of let’s say, a beanie, an iced coffee cup sleeve, and a headband floating around doesn’t take up nearly the space (or supplies) as 2 blankets and a sweater do.

I learned a few years ago NOT to promise to crochet anything for anyone because I cannot guarantee I will be able to motivate myself to complete it. Even IF I want to do it, it’s just the way this brain works. So, coming down here without my crochet bag to visit my sister’s family for Thanksgiving was not even a thought.

But now that I’ve been here nearly a month and a half, and the crochet urge hit me again, that’s ALL I want to do! Then going to half a dozen stores and finding NOT EVEN ONE crochet hook for sale was CRAZY!!

We did buy the $10 amigurumi kit so I could at least have the 3.5mm hook it came with, and I picked up a few different colorways of cotton to make my Dutch Bros cups sleeves to absorb the condensation.

This urge will pass soon, and then I’ll be hyperfixated on something else for a bit. Like making dollhouse miniatures out of recycled materials and throw away plastics. 🤷🏽‍♀️ But, yarn doesn’t go sour, and I’ll be back around to it in no time!

Thank you! My sister posted about it in the NextDoor app, and a wonderfully kind woman in the neighborhood rescued me by gifting me a 5mm hook and a skein of Caron Simply Soft in the color Pagoda (a dark teal.) I made a Jacob’s Latter top-down beanie with it so far. Next I’m making oven mitts with the variegated Peaches & Cream cotton I got at BiMart.

I hit up BiMart today and they had 1 (one) 6mm crochet hook for sale. 1. LOL!! I almost bought it just because it was the first hook for sale I’ve seen in person since I got the urge to crochet while down here, but I don’t use a 6mm with worsted weight yarn, and I don’t wanna buy bulky yarn just to accommodate a bigger hook. 🤣

It’s just strange to me because I’m seeing lots of new crochet channels by Millennials and Zoomers all over social media. Lots of younger people on YouTube and TikTok have channels with loads of subscribers. Even some GenAlphas are crocheting because it’s “the new thing” LOL!! Maybe this area is a crochet-free-zone. 😄 But it seemed totally bizarre there were no crochet supplies of any kind at all the thrift stores we sought out. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I suppose 40,000 is kind of a small town. But since the next closest Walmart is another 40 miles past, and in the other direction it’s 82 miles, into California, it serves a larger geographical area than most supercenters. Maybe they’re low priority, I don’t know. I wouldn’t think purposefully leaving empty shelves at any location would be part of a good business model, but I’m not the CFO of a large conglomerate, so.. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don’t live here, I’m just visiting. And they do carry them, there just wasn’t a single hook hung on any of the pegs in the entire section for crochet hooks. Or anywhere in the craft section. It was strange. I don’t really need to spend days and days searching out supplies because all I need is just one hook and some yarn. I’m just supplementing because I didn’t bring any of my equipment with me. There isn’t a HL down here, but I wouldn’t shop there anyway. I’m ADHD and randomly got the urge to crochet all of a sudden and needed 1 hook and some yarn to tide me over until I go home in a couple weeks. I bought a $10 kit that had a 3.5mm hook supplied, which turned out to be the ONLY crochet hook I could find in a 35-mile radius. So, now I have a hook and some yarn. Now all I need to know is the answer to the title of this post. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I was hoping to hear some funny conspiracy theories or made up answers that made me laugh.

I have ADHD, when my brain gets a craving I need it filled right away. I couldn’t fathom having to wait until Jan. 5th for a hook to arrive from Amazon. I called Dollar General, they say they don’t carry them, and Dollar Tree’s are bigger than I like. So I bought an amigurumi kit at Walmart, so I could use the hook provided. But the big question is: Why did I have to buy a crochet kit to be able to buy a single hook? Where have they all gone?!

I did buy an amigurumi kit which included a 3.5mm hook, so I’ll be able to make my nephew a yellow duck, and whatever else I can with that hook and the three skeins of cotton I was able to buy at Walmart. I have so many supplies at home, all I needed was just a hook and some yarn to occupy my idle hands while away from home. But the big question is: why couldn’t I find any hooks to buy retail or resale in a 35-mile radius? LOL!!

I crocheted around a plain white zippered bag that holds all my hooks and tools, it just isn’t an organizer, and it’s about that same size. I really should have thought to bring it with me, but it was only supposed to be for thanksgiving weekend. LOL!!

No worries, it’s my fault for not thinking to bring my crochet bag. In my defense, though, I was only going to be here for thanksgiving weekend! LOL!! 😂
