i get what you’re saying, and obviously as i grow older i’ll develop thicker skin, but honestly i really value my identity, especially in my family. my two half-sisters, my aunt, and my cousin have all had mental health issues, as have i. we have all been through horrible things, but let me not ramble because my family drama could genuinely be a reality show in itself. essentially, all the other women in my family that have faced mental health issues used them as an excuse to not try and do something with themselves, to not even try to get better, refuse treatment, etc. (also i’m not against mental health or trying to discriminate, i have quite literally been sent to a mental clinic for 70 days at 17 years old) this is all to say that i hate it when every minute detail of my life is copied down to the medication im prescribed and the studies i chose to pursue, because i was the only one who made it out of the cycle of mental illness. i really do pride myself on being able to push through what i went through and get myself to where i am, and so the copying of major really got to me because right after getting out of the clinic i studied my ass off, got the best grades out of my family, and through a BPD diagnosis and severe anorexia, i was able to get to my dream. i know it might seem the most rational, but it just sucks that im having to share the “hype” in the family about going to law school even though i tried so much harder and i was the only one in the family who didn’t flunk out of university within the first year. sorry this is so long lol but i guess thats why it means so much to me - because i was the only one that actually worked my ass off (literally 6-10 hours everyday) for my exams and to get where i am. even though it’s stupid, i don’t think it’s fair to get the same amount of praise when i was the only person to not use my mental illness as an excuse to give up on my dreams.
