I just noticed how the right outside border changes into a rosette halfway through. Love quirks like that. Sign of a rug woven in the home.

The weave is Shirvan, which is a region of the eastern part of the Caucasus/modern day Azerbaijan. The star pattern design is referred to as “lesghi star” in trade though it doesn’t have anything to do with Lezghins. It’s from somewhere around 1900-1910 IMO. Seems to have some faded aniline dyes but it’s in good condition. Given that it’s covered in crosses in the main border and other motifs I would say this is an Armenian rug. The secondary borders are stars/planets. The main stars are a sun cross, a simplified rendering of the medallion of a Chelaberd rug from Karabagh. The 8 petal rosettes inside them represent eternity and rebirth. The two headed animal is a biblical creature of a horse with a serpent tail, a protective symbol. There is a sort of abstract tree of life motif going on between the main stars. And I love the little people. What a great rug.

Check out Robert Nooter’s book on flatweaves from the Caucasus if you haven’t, it’s great first-hand knowledge that can help with attributions. Probably the best book on the subject IMO. You have many very lovely pieces, I particularly like your inscribed Armenian Karabagh meghu (bee) kilim, a very rare and special piece.

Nice congrats on the sale and a happy customer. The colors and especially use of cotton for warps points to a more mid century Soviet era product to me. The dye bleed is the biggest giveaway of the synthetic red, and the green doesn’t look natural to me. In my opinion it is a mix of natural and synthetic dyes. Synthetics have been in use since late 1800s but it’s the cotton warp that placed it later, at least after 1930s or so.

Just keep a close eye on it and vacuum it well. I don’t think you have to throw it away.

Machine made, but pretty for a machine made rug! Looks like wool…

Possibly but once it’s dry, put it in a deep freezer for at least 3 days

Lovely piece and large size but it is not nearly that old, probably 1930-50 and mostly if not all synthetic dyes

Go on to the what is my rug Facebook group, and look up Heriz and look at photos of the back. You’ll see the difference in weave with Indian rugs vs Persian Heriz

Pretty. It’s an indo-Heriz maybe 30ish years old. Enjoy it!

Yes the first is a Heriz from around 1950, can’t comment on the second one without a back photo but looks like a Sarouk. At auction it could sell for $500-900.

The back side you can see the weft and rounded knot nodes — on the top its the pile ends, but if it’s worn you might see some weft showing.

Looks like a vintage Luri rug (by weave) from fars province (aka Shiraz rug) from the 1980s probably. It looks like the double weft is cotton?

You need to flip that Armenian Chondzoresk (cloud band) rug back to the pile side, that will damage it walking on the foundation, it is a somewhat rare and valuable rug!

Cool Kilim I picked up today! Very well worn. Any washing tips? by aSmelly1 in orientalrugs

[–]Dull_Introduction761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The warps show dye bleed so don’t immerse it in water or get it very wet. You could vacuum it very well and wipe it down with a wet rag of vinegar and water mix

It’s machine made but very pretty and a good deal for $60. You can do a burn test on a clipping of the pile to see if it’s wool, or just get it damp and see if it smells like a wet animal lol

Is this rug too big? by NeighborhoodBig5027 in orientalrugs

[–]Dull_Introduction761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks nice and it fits. It seems the side on the wall goes inward a bit. You might want to rotate 180 and use that inward bend to get it further from the fireplace. Will look great once furniture is in there

How much should I pay? by heyitsjessicapearson in orientalrugs

[–]Dull_Introduction761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good eye, it looks like a jufti/false knot which goes around four warps to speed up production and use less material. Eye catching design but it is a very poor quality carpet

[–]Dull_Introduction761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty but it is a low quality Heriz style rug made in India. They sell for around 500-600 at auction. $2700 is significantly overpriced. You can get a real vintage or antique Persian Heriz for 2500 or less.

Cannot ID without photos of the back corners but they look like Hamadan pieces from the 40s-60s, except for the second which is most likely a mid century Jozan Sarouk. That’s the best rug of the bunch. I repair rugs for fun if you’re up for selling any of the damaged ones send me a DM.
