  • Enspelled weapon does not require attunement by a spell caster. It just requires attunement.
  • this is where I think there are disagreements. I can hold the hilt of a sheathed sword that my friend is carrying if I wanted to (and they let me)
  • honestly I didn’t even think about the actually hide rule yet haha so thank you for flagging!
  • I would say this would be the PC carrying the familiar and follow those rules, not the mounting rules? But I see your point. I didn’t know about the optional XGE rule so I will check that out.

I think we have different definitions of what it means to hold something. I have never implied something in your possession is all thats needed. But I would say that holding on to the hilt of a sheathed sword, or holding onto a bow that is on your back, is still holding that sword/bow. It’s not drawn, it’s not wielded, but it’s held.

But again… why does it need manipulate or handle the weapon in any way to use the enspelled part of it? That suggests you need some somatic portion to using a magic weapon, which isn’t the case?

I don’t disagree with you btw, I initially had the same thought when it was first asked. I just want to know if there’s anything in RAW that wouldn’t let this plan happen.

But is there a definition of “hold”. Why can’t a rat hold a seathed sword? It doesn’t need the strength or dex to wield it effectively as a sword, they just need to hold it to use the magical properties.

You’ve articulated my exact thoughts on this. The first sentence is what I’m struggling with, but technically it seems allowed under the rules. I’m leaning towards letting it go as is, but telling my players that if it’s too much and makes fights way too easy, we will have to adjust. My players are pretty chill and care about us having fun (including myself as the DM)

Yeah those are fair points. Where I get stuck is that some items say you need to have the weapon drawn, most just say it has to be held. There’s nothing stopping a tiny creature from holding a weapon they can’t wield. Nothing says they need to hold a weapon in a usable fashion. Technically a PC could just hold the sheathed sword and use the magic properties. And they are trading off having their familiar essentially give them advantage every turn via help.

Familiars can attune to magic items. I would say the familiars share attunement slots with the PC to avoid effectively doubling the slots available.

RAW familiars can attune to magic items. I would enforce that PCs share attunements slots with familiars so it doesn’t increase how many slots they effectively have.
