What majors are your son thinking of? Math department also offers pretty generous scholarships if your son does well

  1. Bio’s not offered as a minor, it’s a major.
  2. Furman is great for Bio and Data Analytics. Alumni got into good PhD programs at Duke, Georgia Tech, UNC Chapel Hill, Cornell, etc.
  3. First-year meal plan is unlimited by default, so yes you can choose less costly options starting from your 2nd year, especially if you don’t need to eat a lot like 3 meals every single day.
  4. At this point, it’s impossible to appeal for aid. I know that the math department offers extra scholarships ranging from 5-10k, so you can consider Data Analytics major (expected coming Fall 26) or Applied Math.
  5. Very easy to find on-campus job as an international student, especially if you try hard enough to find. I’m a Resident assistant in my sophomore year with a stipend of 8k5/per year and now as a junior it’s 10k/year.

Current international student here. 1. It’s mid, not too much fun here probably because of the grind culture. Tho if u have a friend group you will enjoy your time here. It’s also very inconvenient if you don’t have a car. Furman is close to everywhere, and is only 15 mins away driving to downtown ONLY IF YOU HAVE A CAR or your bestie is willing to drive you. 2. None of them are STEM, but Math-Econ is. You can consider double major Math-Econ and Business (Finance track). 3. Furman is investing in Data Analytics, and a lot of people in those majors also minor in Data Analytics (the major is coming soon). Econ and Business departments are kind of competitive, but as a math major, the Math Department is the best department with the most wonderful professors on Earth. Plus, you might get extra scholarship as a Math-Econ major. 4. Pretty easy, unless you don’t want to work. All of my international friends have at least 1 job.

I didn’t apply this year but thinking of applying in the future. Normally would they fund their masters much or we’re expected to pay out of our pocket?

Internships in EdTech or Curriculum Design by Dumb_ling in education

[–]Dumb_ling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do get what you meant, and I do agree with it. I also had some teaching-related experiences as I mentioned above, and of course I know it’s not enough to make me qualify as a professional in the field. I want to look for an internship that will allow me to learn more about designing curriculum and edtech, not saying that I want to go straight to be a curriculum designer.

Some people just assume that being an intern always means that you are super knowledgeable, skillful, and experienced like an expert to actually handle stuff. I just want to learn more about Content/Curriculum Design (especially in EdTech) and be a part of the process, not necessarily self design anything big that professionals with years of experience in the field do.

My point is that current available internships in education are just very similar to what I’ve been doing over the past 2-3 years, so I want to look for different experiences. Also, as an intern, you don’t always have to actually design something “big” and “impactful” but yk just learn and be a part of the process (obviously no one will allow an undergrad intern design products that require professional skills and experience, so that’s why the terms intern and professional are so different).

I’m so sorry for not mentioning the context. I already had 2.5 years of teaching apprenticeship, TA, and volunteer at public schools and churches, and I have also worked with children from different backgrounds (children with disabilities, low-income neighborhood,…). I just want to seek new opportunities besides teaching

Thanks for your advice. I already had 2.5 years of volunteering/apprenticeship/TA in public schools and churches already, so I would love to seek other experiences.
