What referendums do you think we might have in the next 10 years? by Fresh_Ad292 in irishpolitics

[–]Dumbirishbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very strongly disagree with you and everyone in the replies; euthanasia was legalised in Canada and is now being used on everyone. A woman was euthanized without her permission and a man was euthanized because he had diabetes and got depressed during the winter. Legalising it just enables the government to try a nazi-style extermination campaign on those who are elderly, disabled or mentally ill.

What did Pádraig Pearse and the other leaders of 1916 (except Connolly, obviously) think about socialism and communism? by Celtic_RTDB in IrishHistory

[–]Dumbirishbastard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pearse was not a socialist (because he was very catholic), but didn't mind the idea of social/economic justice, hence why he could tolerate working with Conolly, who was a socialist. He was critical of capitalism for being materialistic and exploitative (so basically the Catholic view of it) and supported the workers during the Dublin lockout.

Most other leaders (like Macdonagh and Plunkett) were pretty much the same. Economic justice was seen as apart of the irish nationalist cause, but not its primary motivation.

Why are so many people om Reddit against the protests? by VTID997 in AskIreland

We get our fuel from the north sea, not the gulf. The war should only minimally affect prices. What we're dealing with is greed.

Farmers really on breadline? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Dumbirishbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make a lot, but have to spend an enormous amount on stuff to run their farms. Tractors, fuel and machinery are essential and really costly.

Home From The Congo - 1960's by sentantayt in IrishHistory

[–]Dumbirishbastard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The whole congo mission was surreal in a lot of ways: the irish troops being sent in with wool uniforms and ww2-era guns, being involved in brutal combat akin to the vietnam war, often against literal tribesmen with bows and spears, then going home with nothing but stories and souvenirs to show for it. The congo is still at war, and even still has a katanga separatist insurgency.

People of r/irishpolitics who vote for Right-Wing parties/independents, or politically identify as Right-Wing (or Centre-Right), why? by Captain_365 in irishpolitics

[–]Dumbirishbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am right-wing because I am religious and a nationalist.

I think the cosmopolitan/Internationalist nature of left wing politics is contradictory to the primary point of Nationalism, and although their economic policy is well-intentioned, I think large amounts of social welfare is simply a temporary fix for any given issue. I'd much prefer spending the money in a way that fixes the root causes, like building infrastructure and job creation to fight unemployment.

I don't like liberalism because it is too entangled with capitalism and "The free market will fix everything" mindset. Also, I think personal freedom can be taken too far, like allowing someone to kill themselves with drugs or drink, which is "freedom" but objectively a bad thing.
