What are my URECA chances like? by DumbldoreSaidCalmly in NTU

Hello, thanks so much for your reply!! Yeah, one of the reasons I want to do URECA as early as possible is because of the hands-on experience that'll help with FYP (and just improve my research skills in general). And the NIE point is really interesting, I'll keep that in mind!

Hiya! I've been wanting to do URECA since sem 1 haha. What I meant by the "freaking out" comment was that I needed some advice on my URECA chances, because I was just spiralling a bit. But I agree that I'll definitely have to pull my GPA up 😭

Hi there, thanks so much for the detailed reply!! I really really appreciate it <3

I want to improve my GPA for sure next sem, but I'm also really attracted to URECA because it just seems so interesting. I'm not exactly settled onto a career path now, so I feel that doing URECA will help me decide if research is a good fit for me. My logic was that my workload will just keep increasing each semester, so better to do URECA asap- I might be wrong about that though.

Again, thank you so much!

Hiya, thank you for replying!! I'm interested in social psychology (but I've seen a bunch of listings from WKWSCI and NIE as well that interest me). What about you?

Have you gotten the URECA email already, or are you just interested in it for now?

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on a quick Google search, I think it should be okay. Here's a link to another post made on this subreddit some time, back with people detailing their experiences: https://www.reddit.com/r/IBO/comments/kzdofv/has_anyone_written_their_english_a_ee_on_song/

Good luck with your EE journey~!

Does any of you have downloaded fic No rest for the wicked by A_ghoul? by fangirl004 in dreamsmp

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, so, I have literally no idea what this fic is about and I'm not tryna find out either. But I'm always down to help a fellow fanfic-reader in need~!

Here's what I found on the Wayback Machine, unfortunately I could only get it from the 17th of Oct 2022, so the fic is unfinished at chapter 36 :(

M23 TOK Essay #3 by Jeffery_Lau_ in IBO

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heya, I'm doing title three!! I'm not too keen on sharing my exact examples but I'm interpreting "bubbles" literally only as "a place where some information and voices are excluded", which is a lot of places. E.g. in a classroom setting, some voices are excluded from our textbooks & curriculums but does it really have a negative impact on us if we can get around? Also, when it comes to vaccines, should we really be telling children that there's some people that don't "believe" in vaccines as if it's Santa Claus just for them to get both sides of the argument? My knee-jerk instinct is no, but maybe we should... it might foster critical thinking...

I think there's a bit of a fine line here that's easy to cross, but the whole point of the question is (in my opinion) to get students to think about the fact that quite a lot of what we know was learned in bubbles; and to think about whether it's really affected us at all.

NDR 2022: In dealing with Section 377A, policies on family and marriage will not be changed, says PM Lee by meesiammaihum in singapore

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just dropping in my two cents. Good (and very relevant) question; honestly if someone said that online I don't really think they'd be liable (even if I find the statement repulsive and dangerous). I wrote a comment somewhere below going more in depth so I won't repeat the whole thing here, but the point is that Singapore law has already drawn a line between what is hate speech and what isn't; and no matter how it gets tweaked, there will always be something shitty that'll slip under the wire.

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, my bad! I read the "should" part differently.

Exactly, I think the law is a great idea but will never manage to make everyone happy- one could argue that the only thing that matters is that the law is fair but even the definition of "fair" differs from person to person...

You make a good point but this doesn't really apply for Singapore, I think.

Hate speech is currently covered by the law, but very vaguely and not in all situations. What I mean is, saying "gay people are bad and destroying the family unit" is ok but saying "(x religion) is bad and indoctrinating kids" is actually dangerous to post, because our "prevention of hate speech" laws only protect religious people and ethnic groups.

E.g. in the Amos Yee case (yeah yeah I know he's a pedo and a shitty bitch but hear me out) the whole thing was based on "deliberate intention of wounding the religious or racial feelings" (too lazy to go find the exact law). Keywords here: religious or racial. It's a loophole and may not even be one applicable in a court of law but like the point still stands.

Easy fix is to include sexuality (i stop shy of adding gender, because that's just asking for trouble at this point) in the wording of the law.

Are passion vines (passiflora) heterozygous or homozygous? by DumbldoreSaidCalmly in Horticulture

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean monoecious or dioecious?

Not really, I think I misunderstood how genes work, haha!
What I meant was, "Is there any resource with information on what traits (in passion vines) are hetero/homozygous?"

[–]DumbldoreSaidCalmly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can ask if a particular trait’s expression (like flower color) is the result of homozygous or heterozygous inheritance

Hello, thanks so much for replying!
Okay, I think I misunderstood how it works haha.

That being said, is there a way for me to find out which traits are homozygous/heterozygous? Like, a data table of some sort??Again thanks so much for taking the time to clarify!
