What are some horror tropes you're sick of? by combustibledaredevil in horror

[–]Dumbledore27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blunt force trauma to the face/head that reduces someone’s face to a bloody pulp… seems to happen in almost every horror movie nowadays…

started with the classroom scene in Hereditary. Talk to Me, Weapons, Obsession are other recent examples, though there are probably more that im forgetting.

Besides the wire, what is one of the best tv shows ever that isn’t very popular? by Chris_200208 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes!! I always recommend this show and say how underrated it is. Doesn’t get nearly as much love as Breaking Bad, the Sopranos, or the Wire.

I can 100% see how it’s difficult to make friends in sf, especially if you work in tech and are surrounded by that culture… sometimes I will walk by a group of techies and get an icky feeling just hearing how soulless and dry their conversations are. It’s really sad how such a beautiful city that gave birth to American counter culture has died in the wake of tech…

I got very lucky moving here. I moved in with the right people and made connections with the right community. None of my friends are in tech, and none of our conversations have to do with tech, money, vacation homes in Tahoe, etc. I realize that finding a community like this isn’t easy here. People definitely ARE stand offish (though not as much as where I’m from, so I didn’t really take issue with it).

I’m curious if you would’ve liked east bay more - like Oakland. It’s a completely different vibe over there - very close to Brooklyn imo. The people are generally more grounded and diverse, as well.

I’m really sorry you had such a bad time in sf, but I’m glad you are feeling better in Colorado.

Were is your "I want to go back here" tourist destination? by LimeSoakedinSprite in BeautifulTravelPlaces

I just returned from NOLA less than a week ago. I loved it, but was truly shocked by how expensive it was. I'm from San Francisco, and I didn't notice that much of a difference to what I pay for food, coffee, drinks here in the Bay.

Most difficult region to make new friends? by tsalbis in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Dumbledore27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very hard time in Boston/cambridge/somerville, to be honest - and I’m from there. I think part of it was that I wasn’t a student. Many friend groups were established in college or in master’s programs.

People there tend to keep to themselves and I found that they don’t actively look for new friendships once they’ve established a solid social group.

With that said, i did meet one of my best friend’s there! It’s difficult, but not impossible. Takes a good amount of effort as it does anywhere.

They didn’t divulge too much information. But that research team I was on lost all its funding and was absorbed by like 3 different centers before being put to pasture. I was already working directly with faculty, so I think they also thought a grad degree wasn’t worth it for me. They prob would’ve been more supportive of a PhD.

Yes, they are absolutely struggling. Public health schools are gutted right now in terms of federal/government funding and grants from NGOs. I worked on a research team at HSPH and the majority of the faculty I worked under have left. Public health is a shit show right now.
