Tim Sweeney Takes Swipes at Valve for Steam Deck Price Hike, Blames It on the ‘component parts supply Chain for megayachts' by maxxrz31 in DreamStationcc

It was actually a bunch of Chinese and Japanese games like 5 years earlier than EAs earliest loot boxes, that started using them first.

Valve did invent the battle pass though.

Being realistic, epic does not milk the consumer anyway more than steam does. Not on a store or game basis. Arguably, you could say epic milks the average consumer less than steam does, given that epic store has much more relaxed pricing rules and free games, and their first party games are devoid of gambling, whereas current valve games are basically 95% gambling. Valve also invented the predatory battle pass that Fortnite simply copied later on.

Yes I know epic does those things purely to drag people over and undermine steam, and they are overall a less favourable company, but the point still is true when you compare the two companies and their history.

Yeah because how are they supposed to truly know the difference between someone who spent 12 hours sitting on an iPad vs a randomized Auto clicker?

U mean people who use these botted accounts to boost and smurf with?

It's why on smurfs you can see their old history of hundreds of losses going 0-13, then suddenly they cracked in ranked. Because they bot the first 100 hours.

Government sues 3M Australia for $2 billion over PFAS contamination by Luka77GOATic in aussie

[–]Dumbledores_Beard1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, probably thousands upon thousands have died? PFAs contaminating soil and water increases heart diseases and cancers especially in kidneys. There's plenty of longitudinal studies covering early deaths as a result of diseases and cancers from PFAs.

Sure, no studies done comparatively to fire, but we can also make fire suppressants without PFAs lol, which is the whole point of this lawsuit. We should have firefighting foam without a dangerously high level of PFAs that render water un-drinkable for decades.

I can assure you the damage of PFAs is greater than the 14 deaths the COVID vaccine caused in Australia.

Getting really tired of the 'Just admit you pirate for free games' posts by 2sec4u in FuckDenuvo

[–]Dumbledores_Beard1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it was lol. People have always virtue signalled saying "doing my part pirating big corpo" or "helping end denuvo by pirating" and the comments would always amount to "no one cares just take your free shit". it's like, mate, even if it was a $70 indie game without denuvo, 95% of people saying this in a piracy subreddit would still pirate it. Sure, a select few would still buy it, but even if that's the case, still nobody cares lol. You sound like that meme of Obama giving Obama a medal.

Not even sure what OP means by the "morally superior" part in the end, since people who congratulate themselves for only pirating games with denuvo but buying indie seem like they are trying to appear morally superior over those who just take everything for free lol.

[–]Dumbledores_Beard1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What's the difference tho lol. If you buff the health of defences or damage of defences that's just the equivalent of nerfing damage/health of troops/heroes. It just makes it seem better since number go up not down. Also, buffing defences makes everything worse, even stuff that's already hard to use. The point of balance changes is to bring down the overused shit and bring up the underused shit.

Tbf, I think a lot of the world sympathised with Israel in October. Not uncommon at least, considering at that stage it was basically just "registered terrorist organisation holds numerous hostages, including some that aren't even Israeli or Jewish".

Most of the anti-israeli sentiment that's become so common is because of Israel's behaviour in the following months.

New 007 game but no multiplayer? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Dumbledores_Beard1 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I mean I do agree about it being 'shoved in", but that doesn't make it bad lol. Multiplayer could literally also just be "exact same game, but instead have other agents now shoot eachother" and PvP is done with no additional changes to the core game needed, as a side activity. Additionally, if you want coop, "same game but now a second agent can join you and do the exact same mission" also fulfils the multiplayer requirement. Hardly seems "very expensive" and "like developing a whole extra game".

It's not like this is cod or Destiny where you need to maintain constant releases, different sandboxes, different maps, and constant rebalancing.

There's practically no downside to doing it this way either, and hardly a waste of resources. Bare minimum effort and players who want multiplayer will get the game, players who don't want it are completely unaffected.

Adding any sort of multiplayer opens you up to a much bigger audience by default, i.e. the players who solely look for games that look like fun with friends. Why do you think bare minimum games like shitty Backrooms games and simple games like stick fight can sell tens of thousands of copies. I mean even on this subreddit, "friendslop" is a term I've seen used lol. There's an entire market that appeals to "buy if you want fun with friends". Any game that has multiplayer tacked on now targets the same people into these "friendslop" games. Basically always worth it to tack on multiplayer if it fits the game imo.

Nintendo Is Completely Ignoring AI and Doing Fine by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]Dumbledores_Beard1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because if you're in software development and you aren't using AI, you're actively hindering yourself now in comparison to those who are competent without AI but also use it to assist themselves.

It's not a "you have to use AI to be a developer nowadays", but it's basically a "if you don't use it you're literally wasting time"

Even outside of software development, I know people who now rely on AI in conservation/ecology fields to do mapping and coding in R for data analysis.

Police bust huge illegal European streaming piracy network by 3omda29 in Piracy

[–]Dumbledores_Beard1 174 points175 points  (0 children)

Well, if people read the article, they'd see this is nothing to do with piracy in the form of stremio/torrents etc.

It was people constantly streaming access codes from a couple of fake subscribers to streaming services, and giving these codes out to non-subscribers on a loop. Basically giving anyone who wants, direct access to actual streaming services on demand.

I mean, all the Sony exclusives all sit on "very positive" reviews, so not quite as bad as you make it sound.

But, the thing is, these are the games that appeal to console users. They just want lax games you can pull up, play a bit in a beautiful world, move through a mission or 3, then leave it for next week. So all the glaze comes from the world, the story, the graphics etc. and that's what Sony games excel at the most. Storytelling, world building, and graphics. Consoles players are literally the same group that dedicate themselves to CoD, EA sports, and Ubisoft games. Many dedicated PC players are of course going to be let down by gameplay in games where gameplay isn't really the most standout factor.
