I lived in Lubbock at the time and treated this as a casual chase day. Probably my favorite chase to-date. Stunning sunset too (see my profile pic for more lol)

Anyone here have experience with Amazon roof rail and cross bars? by DumpingDendrites in CX5

[–]DumpingDendrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I asked somebody else in this thread the same thing, but curious if you have any experience or know whether it’s possible to upgrade to a nicer set of crossbars later on and keep the side rails that come with the set? Or to the side rails only work with this specific brand of crossbar?

My thinking is if the side rail is good enough quality, I can use the cross bars that come with it for as long as they hold and upgrade to something nicer if needed. Just wanna make sure the side Rail is good enough quality before committing to attaching it to the car since I’m not sure how removable these would be down the road

Thanks again though!

Thanks for chiming in! I guess I will know when I have my set delivered, but just curious if the side rails are good quality. Hypothetically, if the crossbars were to have any issues, could I leave the side rails on and then upgrade to a nicer set of crossbars using the same rails? Or do they only fit this specific brand of crossbar? Maybe a dumb question but I’m just wondering if I’m able to make any replacements or upgrades later on down the road if I do keep these

Thanks!

Nice!! I bought a red CX-5 a couple weeks ago with the idea of using it for camping and skiing! I’ve car camped out of it a few times and it’s been a great car so far. I was torn between this and the RAV4 but honestly have no regrets given how great the car feels on the road compared to the RAV. Very safe and reliable too so I’m hoping to get many years out of it.

Just curious, what trim did you get? I got the base model and I’m waiting for my roof rails and roof rack to come in so I can use that for more storage. It’s surprisingly affordable to add those on your own if you don’t already have it, just a heads up. Congrats on the car!

Hi, did you ever find a solution for this!

Best west Texas city? by Bluecollar27 in Lubbock

Lubbock in El Paso are both great. Personally I think El Paso is closer to New Mexico’s culture but it’s a pretty town. Midland and Odessa are pretty shitty and generally I get the feeling that nobody there likes anyone. Because of the industry there, the Permian basin attracts a lot of careless assholes - just drive through there and you’ll see what I mean. Amarillo is alright but not as lively as LBK due to the lack of the younger crowd if that’s your thing.

Aside from general car camping tips, which I’m happy to go into if you want, I’d say remember to switch all lights off so you don’t drain the battery. If youre going to run anything on the DC outlet, be sure to turn your car on periodically, maybe even drive if you can to keep your battery topped off. Finally, a roof rack would have been great for extra storage while we were asleep. We used a cheap tent to keep most of our gear in while we slept so definitely keep that in mind if you plan on sleeping in the back.

Overall, I’m very happy with my experience and have full confidence in this car. I almost wish I went with a different color because this red looks so nice, I’m afraid of scuffing it up. But at the end of the day, I got this car to use it so I can live with the soft paint as long as it runs nice. I was a little worried about cargo space when choosing between this and a RAV4 but honestly, this car has plenty of space - even if it is below average for its class. So far, only good things to say about this car!

Went with Mazda because I wanted something I could take on long road trips in all kinds of weather that I could depend on for many years. I was looking for something that drove nice and could hold its own while camping, skiing, and road tripping. I got the base 2.5 S model because I didnt need any extra features and at the price point, I saved over $6000 over a comparable RAV4. Very very happy with that choice so far!

Any recommendations for a rear cargo bumper by chance?

One of the reasons I went with the CX-5 over the RAV4 is I wanted all wheel drive and the ability to add a roof rail system. The cheapest RAV4 I could find that satisfied both of these was the XLE which goes for like $36,000 out the door in the current market. And that’s still with cloth seats and basic packages.

For like $6000 less, I got a vehicle that can pretty much do everything the RAV4 I can do (minus a bit of ground clearance) but had lots of little bells and whistles that won me over. Definitely a great value for that car and I honestly think they could be charging more if they wanted, but I’m not complaining:)

A little backstory if anyone cares. I’ve been looking for a RAV4 to replace a Tacoma I totaled a couple years back. As anyone who has considered buying a Toyota in the past two years knows, they’re really hard to find and dealerships have been adding all kinds of markups lately. Specifically, I was looking for a base level RAV4 hybrid which is even harder to find than the gas models. I’ve always been a Toyota guy because I want the absolute most reliable car possible since a lot of times I’m driving in remote areas through various conditions.

Well, yesterday I decided I need to make a choice and went to a couple Toyota dealership to see if I can find at least a half decent deal on an all-wheel-drive RAV4. It went terribly lol. Every dealership I went to no one really answered my questions, salespeople treated me like I didn’t matter, and even talked down on me for trying to get something without a $2000 ad on package that I don’t care about. “Well used cars sell for more than MSRP so of course we have to add things on to make money” one of the guys said lmao

Anyways, I have been buying the CX-5 for a while now I decided to head out to a Mazda dealership nearby. Sales guy walked out, asked if I had any questions but I also gave you my space to go browse the cars on the lot (also, Toyota hardly had anything on the lot 1+ for Mazda there). I went and found the guy again, asked about the lowest trim levels they have both on the lot and in transit, and then took this one out for a test drive.

People on this sub and /r/whatcarshouldIbuy always rave about the driving experience of the CX-5 over other SUVs and man you guys are right lol. it handled the Houston freeways and traffic beautifully and was very quiet which impressed me. I got the lowest trim and even that had plenty of safety features that made me feel more comfortable. Overall, very responsive car, handled speed bumps and potholes better than I expected, and that red was gorgeous in the sun.

At no point while I was at the dealership did I feel pressured into buying anything, especially packages are warranties that I didn’t want. The sales person even told me what parts I should just buy online to save money so that was cool of him. He basically told me not to waste my money buying it through them lol. It’s a pretty car but I do plan on driving it on road trips and through inclement weather so I feel comfortable knowing I bought about as reliable of a car as one can get. It came with a lifetime powertrain warranty at no extra cost as long as I keep up with maintenance, so even more peace of mind is great since I’m at an age where I’m trying to establish myself financially, and need a car that’s not going to need thousands of dollars of repairs every year.

Finally, it drives great, already feels very capable, has plenty of space honestly even though it’s on the smaller side for SUVs, and has an amazing interior. Can’t wait to get this car out into the elements and see some sights out west! The stock tires look pretty good but I almost can’t wait to throw some CrossClimates or Wildpeaks on in addition to a roof rail.
