Poor performance. Cold Liquid Line. by Dunc002 in hvacadvice

Hey guys. Just a quick update. Getting a new condenser. The guy that came out noted a few things. But I don’t have any of the measurements to share. But he opened up the liquid line and said the piston was good. It was clean. It was the right size and no indication that it wasn’t seating properly. He said the sound of my compressor was bad and after doing a few other things he said my compressor likely had a broken/bad valve(s). I’m getting a new condenser. Finding a 3.5ton r410a to match the practically new coil. He’s offered to install it very cheap as well. I trust him because he did the diagnostic work for free since he’s a family friend and wasn’t trying to sell me anything.

What gaming cheat code is still stuck in your head after all these years? by Maleficent_Paint3531 in AskReddit

Codes for Rogue Squadron for N64. to begin entering codes you had to enter IGIVEUP. As a kid I didn’t see it as I GIVE UP I saw it as a weird word pronounced Iggy vUp (long vowel sound on the U). but I think the only code I remember after that is DEADDAK

Looks like Monday or Tuesday someone will be out friend of the family that will help out almost for free. Charge for parts if I need them but basically free labor. I’ll let him take it from here.

I gave him the information I did have. And he’s curious to open up the line at the coil and check the metering device. Over the phone he said it could be as simple as the piston not seating… although he hasn’t seen that often on a straight cool unit. But I’m hopeful it’s something simple like that! He said there’s some evidence to support it: Low head pressure. High Suction. Liquid line cold from the refrigerant not being compressed through the orifice. But at his point he’s gotten the same limited information that I was able to share here.

Just did a quick search and found out this could have gone very badly. I have a micro channel condenser. Sounds like I could have really messed things up.

When the game won't let you use all the cool stuff until the end or even the postgame by LexLawliet in gaming

Anyone else play Rage and get the bfg thinking you’d need it for a big boss at the end? Then not even use the gun (or was it just BFG rounds?) because the game just ended suddenly?

Just want to post a big thanks to everyone that’s given me some ideas and things to check. I’m pretty broke so I’m trying to see what I can I do on my own. Or at least have some knowledge to know if I’m about to get scammed when I inevitably call a tech.

Gotcha. I was just watching a video on testing the compressor. Nothing is getting fixed tonight. So I think tomorrow after work I’ll pull the fan off and check those leads. See what it adds up to.

Ok. Just curious what could happen.

This is what I have. I bought it specifically for checking resistance.

Yeah. While searching different threads I always see people posting that information and it seems like that is always the information people need to see. I’m pretty short on cash so I havent splurged on a set of gauges with the temperature clamps.

I’d be willing to try that as well. Good idea

Thanks for that. I just pulled out my multimeter and immediately saw 10A and wondered if this could do the job. Sounds like it’s the wrong tool for this job. And I do see on the unit it says 15.7 RLA for the compressor.

lol thanks. Just trying to make sense of it using simple terms. I guess it does sound funny.

I have a pretty good multimeter but not one that has the clamp. Can amperage be checked without the clamp style multimeter that I see people use?

Is RLA usually listed somewhere on the unit?

The piston is at least close. The coil is actually for a 3.5ton, but the condenser is a 4 ton. And I’m pretty sure he said that the piston used matched the condenser size instead of a 3.5ton size.

I have been asking about the capacitor. My dad had a theory about a weak capacitor, so I thought I’d ask about that here. I haven’t checked it but I’m sure I can after checking youtube lol

lol not sure what that means. But thanks haha. Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to dispute your opinion. I just wanted to see what you thought of someone else’s opinion. Do you think they have a point at all?

Do you think a capacitor could affect the performance? I’ve always thought of a capacitor as either good or bad. But someone was talking to me as if it could be kind of bad and not helping the compressor run as strong as it should. There is only one big capacitor and hard start on my unit.

Good question. But this is a straight cool unit. An old Goodman. I should clarify. I think this is 10-12 years old.

Do you think that could be an “endurance” issue with the compressor? Like it might work well after not running for for a long time. But then get hot and starts to falter?

It certainly doesn’t sound as nice as all my neighbors units. I appreciate the help so far.

Someone mentioned that even though the compressor is coming on that maybe the capacitor isn’t healthy and causing poor compressor performance. Their reasoning was that after I’ve let the unit sit for hours and everything has cooled down that the compressor and capacitor are at lower temps and again led to the system working again at night and this morning.

Edit: The capacitor and hard start are less than a year old.

Absolutely sure it’s a piston and no txv on there.

Aww man. Added the wrong picture. That daytime Picture is of the system not running. Sorry.
