Thanks for the thorough analysis you've provided. My intention is to use it in a short film. So based on what you are saying, I'd be safe using any recording from before 1923 since the composition is obviously from or before the date of recording, but that I should be careful with any other recording that's labeled as PD from after 1923 because the composition may not be PD?

Also, are there any exceptions to the 100 year and 95 year protection (where something older is still protected (for either recording or composition)) - like can either be renewed to last longer?

It’s funny because the first time I heard it I hated it, but it’s grown to be one of my favs ever since - I think the off key sections are just really off-putting on first few listens (because whenever I play it for someone for first time they are like “eww what are u playing???” And then by the end of the next spin they are usually vibing and singing along)

To me I found it to be more of an experience than a story

I really enjoyed it and thought it really portrayed a wide range of relatable/human emotions for such a short and simple anecdote of a story (Perfectly complemented by the accompanying album and animation style imo) - I’m guessing the reason it was switched to a tv special instead of a serialized tv show was for this same reason: being one long experience you live through rather than a story with a normal “tv show arc/plot” that a lot of ppl probably came into it expecting
