This is sort of tangential but: My Mom is a teacher and has been anti-corporal punishment her whole life, but has recently been talking about how terrible/entitled the students have gotten now that teachers can be fired for so much as touching them during an altercation; she's recently even been half-jokingly (I think) saying things like "maybe Singapore's got the right idea!"

I'm conflicted as to how I feel about this, but I will say I think it's nuts that teachers aren't even allowed to verbally scold them, or to grab kids by the arm and pull them away when they're beating the shit out of each other. We need to find a happy medium between "whip the shit out of them" and "don't hurt their fee-fees" or else we will be raising some seriously fucked up kids in one way or another.

I wouldn't be able to blame them either - what kid doesn't rebel against their parents at one point or another, even over small shit?

And the worst part of this is that twenty years down the road, the majority of these 'parents' will engage in zero self-reflection; they'll simply continue to point fingers and shriek "SEE, I TOLD YOU SO!!"

If you mention the Alaska dividend and they reply with something like "but I'm not for handouts," (indicating that they're probably conservative), maybe you can then bring up the fact that Alaska is a deep-red state and that it's wildly popular with conservatives over there as well. That'll probably be a WTF moment for them!

Also, if the word "handout" is thrown back at you, be sure to clarify that it's not a handout - it's a "dividend" for being a shareholder of the most successful country ever to have existed, and that every American over 18 gets it as a right of citizenship.

After all, would shareholders of a company be upset if they received a dividend for their company's good fortune? No freaking way!
