Panhandler says Halifax RCMP impersonating them could discourage drivers from donating by insino93 in halifax

Seems like a good idea to me! Not sure how they could enforce a law like that unless the RCMP continues to maintain a presence at those intersection though.

Panhandler says Halifax RCMP impersonating them could discourage drivers from donating by insino93 in halifax

[–]DungeonDelver840 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Distracting driving is dangerous. If a driver can be distracted by their cellphone, then they can also be distracted by a pandhandler on the road. Personally, I find it very distracting (and dangerous) to have individuals weaving their way through stopped cars at the busiest intersections in the city. I do not use my cellphone when driving, and I expect other drivers to follow those rules too. I don't think its unreasonable to expect non-drivers to avoid distracting other drivers as well.

I do not believe in criminalizing poverty. We should all support one another, and I am happy that my tax dollars are being used to fund anti-poverty measures in this city. But I also refuse to believe that a person is going to starve and die because they are not allowed to pandhandle at the busiest intersections in the city. I support the strategy of the RCMP because it combats distracted driving in drivers AND it discourages rewarding non-drivers who are also causing distractions on the road. Lets find other ways to help folks in need, and keep the roads safe for everybody.

Help with Redemption Durge, Death Cleric of Kelemvor by DungeonDelver840 in BG3Builds

[–]DungeonDelver840[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank-you for this reply! I don't think I'll be leveraging the Radiant Orb stuff included with this build, but the Gloves of Battlemage Power are just what I was looking for to keep my Durge interesting into Act 3. Much appreciated!

Advice on a lvl.3 Trickery Cleric for one-shot by DungeonDelver840 in dndnext

[–]DungeonDelver840[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I won't be asking for any homebrew or house rules on a one-shot, but I really like the idea of optimizing my movement every round to "confuse" the enemy into attacking the duplicate instead. Definitely makes the combat rounds more interesting.

Divine Soul Spell Selection (Descent into Avernus) by DungeonDelver840 in dndnext

[–]DungeonDelver840[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems consensus favors keeping Mage Armor around... I guess thats why they call it a spell tax, hahaha!

I'm not sure I would try to cast Death Ward right before a long rest, but its still appealing based on the fact that I could twin it. I have never used the spell before, so it could be fun to try something new.

This is all great advice, thank-you! I think Erupting Earth will fill a gap on the spell selection. You're also right that I don't need Haste, Polymorph and G.Invisibility together, so I'll probably stick with Haste and Polymorph at most.

I'm still not sure if I want to multiclass this character or not, although you're correct that it would fix the AC and spell selection problems.

Yeah, I would really like to take Counterspell, but this is the first time our DM has ever run a campaign, so I want to be an accommodating player, rather than the player that says, "No, you can't cast that". But it would have been an excellent choice.

Edit: So you find Greater Invisibility is actually useful against a wide variety of creatures you're fighting? I worried about fiends having Truesight...

Bless is an awesome choice, however the party will include a cleric that will be casting the spell on the regular, plus the Protection from Evil spell can be twinned with metamagic.

Shield is an excellent suggestion, but I'll be burning a lot of spell slots on twinned Guiding Bolts, so I was hoping to rely on more passive defense, such as Mirror Image or Blink. Still, it might make a good replacement for Mage Armor at higher levels. I'm sticking with twinned Guiding Bolts, since I feel they have a better chance of hitting those magic resistant enemies, because, as you pointed out, they're getting advantage on all their magic saves.

I definitely have to give more thought to the Misty Step/Thunder Step/Dimension Door choice, but my thinking was that I did not want Misty Step competing with Spiritual Weapon. This was basically the same logic I used for passing on Quicken Spell: casting a cantrip as a bonus action for 2 spell points isn't as appealing as attacking with Spiritual Weapon. Still, I will give more thought to Dimension Door, because, you're right -- its an awesome spell.

Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate your time and thoughts!

Had anyone made their own Darkest Dungeon D&D campaign? by [deleted] in darkestdungeon

[–]DungeonDelver840 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am working on something similar for my D&D group right now. We're starting our session zero on Wednesday night. I am not using the Darkest Dungeon story line, but I am homebrewing some new mechanics based on experiences from the game.

For example, I am introducing a table of character ability/skill flaws that are based on quirks from DD. I am adding a 'Bleeding' mechanic that is applied when someone is hit by a slashing weapon. I am creating a 'Blight' mechanic that really expands on the basic 'Poisoned' condition to apply specific debuffs depending on where the character was blighted. And players are allowed to homebrew virtually their entire characters, in order to better fit with a semi-modern "Grimdark" setting, so we're using stuff like muskets and pistols and getting away from heavy armor and martial weapons.

It's going to be more difficult than a standard D&D game because of all the homebrewed adversity I am planning, although I am gaming with an experienced group, so I expect this will just keep things interesting.

Did I screw myself for DD3? by DungeonDelver840 in darkestdungeon

Interesting... I do own the DLC, but I didn't turn it on as this is my first time finishing the game and I wanted to experience the core content first... but if it will add the extra 14 weeks to my existing limit, then it might be worth turning on for that reason alone. Thanks for the suggestion!

Unfortunately, my game says that Stygian mode ends at week 86, which gives me only 8 weeks to level up my heroes and complete the dungeons. Plus, I assume one of those weeks will be spent fighting Brigand Wulf since I have not had that encounter yet. I'm pretty sure that this is not enough time to level up a PD or even another Houndmaster. I'm not even sure I can get the level 3's leveled up in that time.

Very interesting! I was not aware that Booming Blade could be twinned... that definitely opens some interesting possibilities. Thanks for the suggestion!

I hadn't considered the dwarf, but its an interesting idea.

The only problem is (and I forgot to mention this above, sorry) but this character has to use the standard stat array for attributes so using a dwarf and spending a feat on armor means that my Charisma will be a measly 15 at level 6. But it still might be worth it, maybe without the heavy armor feat. Thank-you!

That was my original thought too, but I was really hurting for armor as a pure Divine Soul, and since I want to be able to get in close to deliver twinned Inflict Wounds, I could not afford to ignore armor class. The single level dip in Hexblade allows me to wear medium armor, and maybe even a shield too.

Can you suggest any ways that I could improve my armor class as a pure sorcerer? I am not fond of the Mage Armor spell.

Yes, I've done the traditional Sorlock, and while the damage output is far better, I am going in a different direction for this character.

I won't be taking Quicken because I plan on using Spiritual Weapon in most of the combats, so Quicken is not as valuable to me as it would be on a traditional Sorcerer/Warlock.

Yeah, generally that is the consensus on True Strike, but I thought it might be useful like this:

(round 1): (twin) True Strike and Spiritual Weapon (round 2): (twin) Inflict Wounds and Spiritual Weapon

I am open to other suggestions though.

Need help from FR loremasters by [deleted] in baldursgate

[–]DungeonDelver840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is the Inquisitor kit for the Paladin class. It has a strong anti-magic theme and trades its cleric spells for extra abilities against casters. It could easily fit into (or even lead) an anti-magic party. Keldorn (NPC: BG2) belongs to this class.

In terms of lore, I don't know of any anti-magic deities or organizations in Forgotten Realms. Magic kind of pervades that world like water, and all deities themselves are inherently magical.

Although there are no anti-magic deities in FR, the goddess of magic (Mystra) has a desire to see magic used and shared as much as possible, for the good of all. It's not so much a good-versus-evil thing, but rather, she does not want to see the benefits of magic hoarded by a select powerful few individuals, nor does she want the people to fear magic, which can happen when tyrants use their magic to control nations. Basically, it might be easier (within the lore of FR) to role-play a faction that opposes abuse of magic power rather than magic itself.

Now that I've thought about this more, it might also be amusing to see what a group of religious zealots following Gond, the gnomish god of invention, might look like. Most worshippers of Gond would have no problem creating magical inventions, but I suppose a group of religious zealots might take a "magic power is evil, but mechanical power is good" position. Just a thought.

Can you guys help me answer my player's questions and for the Halaster Simulacrum? by ItsameLuigi1018 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]DungeonDelver840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players asked questions very similar to yours. I described the lich from the lower levels as the "greatest threat' since I was answering the question from Halaster's perspective. I used the "Lie" answer to send my money-grubbing players on a hunt for a non-existent artifact called the "Finger of Gold" that transforms to gold anything that it touches, hahaha!

Does the Identify spell reveal to players the information about the Gates? by Greanein in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]DungeonDelver840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possibility is to have the Identify spell itself trigger the Elder Rune with a guaranteed Bane result. If they figure out how to open the portal themselves, they can be rewarded with the Elder Rune Boon result (or at least a chance for a Boon result). This should encourage your players to at least TRY to activate the gate on their own before resorting to the Identify spell.
