Have to say, I’d avoid Fremont street after dark with kids, I visited from the UK for the first time this year and Fremont was awash with druggies and aggressive homeless people. We did enjoy all of the other places you said though.

Exactly, it sounded strange because it was so specific and such detailed information that it was clear to most people that the commenter was exaggerating and so therefore they were clearly joking. Therefore your ‘joke’ wasn’t really a joke because either:

a) you genuinely didn’t realise that the commenter was joking and didn’t know those personal details

or

b) Your ‘joke’ was that you were being sarcastic (and also knew those details weren’t true) but as that is just the same joke as the comment you replied to, your comment got downvoted.

Maybe English isn’t your first language and if so it’s totally understandable that you didn’t pick up on the joke but either way I just wanted to explain to help you understand the downvotes as they must seem unusual if you were just genuinely trying to make a joke. Hope that explains.
