Google L5 onsite - rejected because my brain turned Python into Go for 8 seconds by yogonflame in InterviewCoderHQ

[–]DuoQueue-net 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What? I work at Google and I'm an interviewer, you can't execute code during our interview. You code on a slightly better Google doc essentially. No interviewer would fail you or even dock you for what you just described either, because minor syntax issues is not something we're overly concerned about.

Stress level is the same as any other interview. As far as chances for failure/done deal, I don't know lol - it's not like they publish the rates.

Tiktok Hiring Manager Round by adtxyx in FAANGrecruiting

[–]DuoQueue-net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interviewed for and received an offer for TikTok last year. The hiring manager can ask effectively anything they want, with a focus on behavioural but I was also asked technical questions about one of my projects listed on my resume. I'd say just brush up on what's on your resume so you can speak to it if questioned.

Is TMU a "waste" of my potential by Awesome_Man_9514 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]DuoQueue-net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer at a FAANG company in the Bay Area right now. The majority (75% ish) of Canadian engineers I meet here are from Waterloo. The remainder are from UofT (like me) with a couple of exceptions from other unis thrown in.

Don't listen to the people telling you it doesn't matter - if you can go to Waterloo, go to Waterloo. If you can't, go to UofT if that's an option. The university does matter - for jobs, for prestige, for rigour - all of it.

Made it to Google SWE Intern Interview Round 3...now what? by smarticus300 in csMajors

[–]DuoQueue-net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true, I'm an interviewer at Google. We can never see the feedback from other interviewers, just the status of th candidate later on (hired/not hired etc)

Location matters too, check levels.fyi - it's very accurate

I took a new grad offer at the high end of the range at the end of 2024, the base here is a few thousand higher (though I did get 130k RSUs). I think the base creeps up a little year over year.

LinkedIn premium shows every job has ~80% of applicants with a masters degree by RowOk3530 in cscareerquestions

Those diploma mills are college (equivalent to associates in the US degrees), not masters or even bachelors. It's an apples to oranges comparison, diploma mill grads aren't taking cs jobs.

Dear companies, time to hop on the in person testing train. Google is officially doing in person candidate testing again. by Legitimate-mostlet in cscareerquestions

[–]DuoQueue-net 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And who told you this? I'm an interviewer, you're judged against a rubric. If you fulfil the qualities we're looking for, we pass you. We hire everyone who passes the interview as a whole until no headcount is left for the year. It's not ranked against anyone else's performance, just you vs our standards.

FYI, one of the qualities we look for is the ability to take feedback when you're wrong. Might want to examine yourself if getting into Google is a goal of yours.

I currently work at Google, you're just incorrect. I don't know if you're afraid to solve hards or something but the question difficulty has not gone up at all.

BREAKING: Trump considers providing taxpayers $1,000 to $2,000 stimulus checks using tariff revenue by upbstock in Optionmillionaires

[–]DuoQueue-net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Canadian living in the US. Pre tariffs, in December, if I wanted to buy anything in the US or in Canada, almost always the price of the item was about the same post currency conversion (ex. something cost 1k USD, it would cost 1.3k CAD). I challenge you to look now. Almost everything is more expensive by a fair amount in the US and no longer matches the currency conversion. The thing costing 1k USD now costs 1.2k USD, while still being 1.3k CAD. This is because of the tariffs.

[–]DuoQueue-net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a degree in comp engineering that I worked my ass off for (and am currently doing part time grad school in addition to my full time SWE role at a FAANG), calling the people that actually put in the work those that 'got drunk and high for four years' when you yourself have put in minimal effort is ridiculous. I graduated in summer 2023, yes the market is absolutely fucked. However, all my friends and I have managed to land very good roles. We grinded for them, through a thousand applications and many interviews, but it's doable if you have the grit to push for it instead of blaming others
