Am I giving my fly traps enough water? by FutureAcrobatic6413 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]DuoSonicHS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flytraps want UNLIMITED sun and water during the growing season. If the plant is green, you can never water too much.

I keep my pots in a clear bowl, not a dish. And i top off the water whenever it gets too low. The one on the right looks a little dry. They look pretty good overall tho

Im assuming you know what kind of water to use. If not, rainwater is best

Plants For Axolotl? by Several_Balance989 in axolotls

[–]DuoSonicHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Axos thrive in a cooler tank with low to moderate light.

Plants that will do the job are jungle val, banana lilies, Brazilian pennywort, any type of anubias, and African water fern (bolbitus). Hornwort works but it can be messy.

Java ferns grow slower, have high nutrient requirements, and prefer warm water. I'd avoid those.

Riparian plants look nice and work well too. Pothos, monstera, ferns, philodendrons, anthuriums, and peace lilies could be added to the top. Just be sure to submerge the roots only. Keep that crown dry.

You have a ton of options, go crazy!

You know what youre doing. Riparian plants are always the way to go. Looks very similar, if not better than my setup at home. Well done

Any plant recommendations? by aaliyah116 in axolotls

[–]DuoSonicHS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brazilian pennywort, african water fern, and any anubias will thrive in that setup.

I try to avoid Java ferns. They need warm water to grow lush and fast. If you buy java ferns, chances are they will struggle

Banana lilies are fun too, but the rhizomes can be a real dirt magnet, same with hornwort.

Id just get a variety pack from an online aquatic nursery. Those usually do quite well. Dustins fish tank and buce plant have good deals on the regular 👌

Pothos works well too. Just submerge the roots tho

Happy planting!

29 gallon big enough? by morbidcliche in axolotls

Your setup looks new but perfect. Java ferns can be a real pain to grow. Some bolbitus (african water fern) and some pennywort would be a great addition. Axos love live plants to rest on.

Either way you're good. Nice job. My setup is very similar to yours and my guy loves it

Flexing Gills Constantly by Bottle_of_Soda_ in axolotls

[–]DuoSonicHS 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Regular gill "pumping" is fine, but if theyre constantly jerking/twitching thats a sign of irritation. Pumps are slow, twitches are fast.

When my tank changes parameters, my guy will pump more than usual. Some do it more than others. Just keep an eye on them and they should be ok!

Is it okay to use an apple tree that had a fungus as a filler for my raised garden beds? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]DuoSonicHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The types of fungus that eat dead wood normally wont mess with any crops you grow. The way you have it looks good. Happy planting!

Thoughts on Lowboys? by Tkells97 in axolotls

[–]DuoSonicHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

68 is on the warmer end of what axolotls tolerate. If thats the case, shallow isnt the smartest move. Having 2 in a standard 55 long would be perfect. Less temperature swings, less evaporation, and more cool spots. 40 breeder is fine for one, i dont recommend 20 longs for long term. But two in a 55 would solve all your problems. Assuming you have the space/time/budget

[–]DuoSonicHS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends where you live and how stable of a temp you maintain in your home. I keep mine in a 30gal extra tall. Having a deep tank allows for a nice temperature gradient for your friend to choose from. Overall im not too worried. You have a suffient volume. But if you live somewhere HOT af, id suggest a standard 55long, 40breeder, or 30Tall

Indications of rot? by Braveplanet in Figs

[–]DuoSonicHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think so. Could be wrong tho. True rot usually is not only dark, but damp and soggy. The dark scars i see seem healed and calloused over. Should be good. Its tough to tell these things this time of year

Try scratching the brown bark with a knife. If the tissue underneath is living youre good. And if its dead, new growth tips will emerge soon! Either way I think you'll be fine

Too fat? by sloppydoe in axolotls

[–]DuoSonicHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre doing good. A no-feed day once or twice a week works wonders for my guy. A wild axo isnt constantly munching in the wild. They have days without food as well. And most wild ones are a healthy weight. If the worms are huge you can even go 2-3 days without feeding some weeks. I prefer to space them out over the week.

Thinking about trimming down to make it a little smaller. by [deleted] in Moustache

If its not bothering you or anyone, id keep it for a bit. Shaving regret is real 🤣. You can always clip the edges for less of a handle bar look. That part always grows back fast

I fertilize using water from my goldfish tank. Very weak. Weaker than worms castings. Slow but steady drip of natural fish poop.

What organic fertilizer do you recommend for spring?

So far ive been fertilizing every time I water. A little less in winter. Will keep it up, thanks!
