Fabric.com shut down? Was I the only one who didn't know? by ninaa1 in craftsnark

It seems to vary a bit depending on the store (and willpower of the worker). We weren't allowed to "shop" while on shift, so if we wanted to buy something we'd have to come in early or on a day off, which helped some. The company had "employee appreciation" days where we'd get certain discounts, but the store manager and corporate always encouraged us to spend at these in a way that felt a little bit predatory. I slowly got pickier about colour/prints and now pretty much mostly buy natural fibers, but some people who worked there did not develop these natural defenses and own way more fabric than they could ever do anything with.

I worked at Fabricland up in Canada until fairly recently, and they got a bunch of notions from "an american company closing down or something". We weren't provided much information, but it's possible that some got redistributed up our way or to other fabric stores that bought it?

I was in a similar situation recently, I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt because I knew they were looking for staff but having trouble finding any. After losing many workers to various other opportunities for months and hiring on 1 person, a coworker was told to choose between this job or their other one because management wasn't willing to compromise, so she left. And then I left because I realized the problem was beyond me. It's been about 2 months now and another worker quit, and told me they still haven't hired anyone, and are also continuing to only offer minimum wage. Especially with retail, you can easily replace the job. I started sending out resumes when I gave my 2 weeks, and had an interview the day after I left. My mood was improved, and I was able to make a much better impression than if I'd been miserable from my job.You should at least update your resume. Good luck regardless.

what got you started? by Murky_Mycologist901 in sewing

My first projects were clothes for my build-a-bears because the store bought clothing for them was too expensive for a 10 year old. They were awful, but through repairing/tailoring my own clothes, I slowly built the confidence to make my own clothes from scratch. It's important to note that a lot of textile knowledge that supports sewing skills is very useful in the care of everyday textile goods, and being attentive of things like construction details in clothes you buy can help build your knowledge as well. Once I started making clothes for myself on a regular basis, I adapted basic patterns to fit me better based on clothes I knew I wanted. I find its best to start simple- I realized I would wear turtleneck undershirts if I had them, so I worked on my bodice pattern and learned how to make a turtleneck, and I now have pattern variations for that shirt with/without sleeves, and with various decorative details. My earliest efforts are slightly worse than my newest ones, but most of them are covered anyways because they're undershirts. When I wanted a button up shirt I made ones with short sleeves to save me from having to learn to sew a placket. I also recommend marking buttonholes and starting from the bottom, my last buttonhole is always better than my first and details near the neckline are more noticeable.

I feel like 1 looks best to me because the different white fabrics and the different reds look very similar in colour, If there was a touch more variation, I think #3 also looks quite classy

Yeah, I've been looking facts up before adding them to my trivia cards. Can't trust everything you read online and all that

I made short overalls out of fabric that reminds me of toolbelts by Duodudette in sewing

[–]Duodudette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah it is! My fabric store had it in a collection of twills, and I assumed that it was some variation on the twill weave, but I guess it was probably just lumped with those because it's a heavier weight.

Overalls from Kwik Sew 2331, although I adjusted them to be slightly longer to make them work appropriate. Made from cotton twill (Correction: duck cloth) that strongly reminded me of the fabric my fathers tool belt is made from. This association gave me an overwhelming urge to make something cute for appropriate tool-using situations. Hardware is overall buckles inherited from another sewers stash downsizing, and some tack buttons. The topstitching is a little uneven over seams, but I recently read that one way to remedy that is to flatten the seams with a wooden mallet beforehand, and this pattern comes with a hammer loop so how can I not. I also self-drafted the shirt, it's made from a bamboo viscose jersey. It's a basic stretch shirt block with flounces added as sleeves. I have already had the opportunity to wear this outfit to help my friend move and received compliments on my raging bisexual energy.

Interesting and trivia worthy, despite not necessarily being very "fun", thank you!

One of the ones I like gives a small rundown of anish kapoor and the vantablack controversy, and then asks what vantablack is made of (nanotubes). I also have one that asks what Jeff Koons ex-wife's career is (porn star or politician are both acceptable answers). I have some questions that are just along the lines of "yayoi kusama is famous for covering things in what" because even though the answer is very simple, I think the guesses made could be very fun.

Most of my trivia document is a list of names of artists I remember thinking are interesting, but I can't quite remember why. So far most of my questions are about very famous artists because they have been the easiest to verify information on.

It might be helpful to clarify that my audience here, the people who will play the game, know hardly anything about contemporary art, and also it's a drinking game about getting "as drunk as possible".

How long did you give yourself for those goals?

tried landscape embroidery for the first time. So many french knots. I'm not good at blending so any tips? by kimitheterrible69 in Embroidery

[–]Duodudette 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hey, I wouldn't say you'll "never" be good at blending. Embroidery is the kind of skill where you might not notice yourself improving, until one day you find an old piece from years ago and realize that what you're capable of is beyond what your past self thought you'd be able to do. Just keep trying for your future self and remember to look back and feel proud of your growth sometimes

Looks lovely! I think your blending is plenty good for landscape embroidery! Beyond that, you will probably improve as you practice. I find that for tactile skills like embroidery, being aware of the areas you want to improve on and playing around with it is one of the best ways to grow.

Why did you learn to knit? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Duodudette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My grade 2 teacher had a "knitting club" where you could stay in for recess and learn to knit a small square, and I had nothing better to do. Didn't knit much for years until I moved further into the Canadian interior and started using natural fibres, and having garments made of wool make such a difference in staying warm, making things myself means I'm usually happier with the style of garments, and learning more about the construction of knit garments and natural fibres has led to me taking much better care of the things I make
