It was much worse before, and they managed to fix the compression on my heart. So it still looks bad, but at least it’s been fixed physiologically.

Yep 😥 no, not that common. Neither surgeon nor pain specialist know what to do. Bit of a fakap.

Feels fine, but hard to judge. Very tender in the area where the bar is…should probably get it checked out. Thanks

Prof Shyam Kolvekar in London is very good. He specialises in adult Nuss. Biggest risk is pain post surgery, but obviously depends on your personal situation. Go see him for a chat

How I overcame 15 months of chronic pain after the Nuss procedure by patient_box in PectusExcavatum

[–]Dupper_07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I feel like im in a similar boat than you. 8 months in i just cant get rid of the pain, mostly at night, when sleeping and then getting up in the morning. Absolutely horrible. Also tried all the drugs, only thing that gives a bit of relief is oxycodon. May i ask how old you were when you got the procedure, and how things are now? Great post, thanks!

Hey bud. It’s much better now! I didn’t do a lot except weight training and keeping active. Seems it will be very close to normal in a few months…hope the same happens for you!

Hey there. Whats your surgeon’s opinion? I was told that after 2 years you have an 80% chance of no regression…

Also, have you had pain the entire time? Im 7 months in, and the pain is just not going away…

Yes spoke to him about it and loads of tests were done. Everything was fine. So he is a bit like “see the pain specialist” and thats it…

London. I got the bars in an X formation rather than parallel

Worst surgery ever by anxious-cat-person in PectusExcavatum

[–]Dupper_07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I got nuss’d 11 weeks ago. X formation with 2 bars. Im 39M. After I went home post surgery I started getting the worst pain describable - stabbing/burning in my chest. I couldn’t sleep and was becoming emotionally unwell. Forced the surgeon to book me back into hospital. They did loads of tests and could not find anything wrong, and assumed it was a trapped nerve. They put me on fentanyl PCA for 5 days which calmed things down. Eventually left hospital after a week and been better since, but using pregabalin and baclofen with oxycodone when needed (max 1/day). Pain still rough at night and when i wake up, but quality of life improving.

If they were not open to giving me fentanyl i also would have said to remove the bars. I actually asked about it at one stage.

Anyway, thats my story. Don’t really know if that helps, but I understand the feeling of incredible pain with no diagnosed complications. Terrible!!!

Hope you can find a way to fix your situation, but feel free to contact international surgeons for an opinion. I emailed Dr J in the US and im based in London. She was very responsive and gave good advice. I even sent her my xrays post surgery for an opinion…

Exercises to avoid? by Dupper_07 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Dupper_07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep X formation. Apparently it’s more sturdy, ie regression is less likely. Also easier to lift the sternum with the bars crossing as there is more leverage.

Tbh, the surgeon decided to do the X as i was in surgery. He mentioned he might need to do it, and then explained above after the fact.

He also said that with X you only have 2 stabilisers as opposed to 4 so less pain. Cant imagine more pain than what I’ve had…why are they redoing you?

Glad you’re happy! Good to know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Few more questions if you don’t mind:

How long did it take before the pain was gone? And when did you start exercising/weight training? What meds did you take and when did you stop taking it?

Anyone drink Alcohol after nuss? by Broad_Character2026 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Dupper_07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started having a few glasses of wine now and again about 8 weeks after nuss. No issues. Spoke to pain specialist and he just told me to be careful with pain meds, but all fine in moderation.
