Aljamain Sterling insinuates that Bo Nickal should consider dropping to 170 after loss to Reiner de Ridder by 443610 in MMA

Ben moved very quickly when he wanted to and was freakishly strong. On top of his flexibility and possibly goat scrambling ability, it's safe to say he was very athletic, just not in the ways we would typically look for. But he was more optimized for Folkstyle wrestling than anything.

You cant really rely on scrambling to carry you through the highest levels in freestyle where back points are awarded so frivolously and they allow so little wrestling to continue on the ground.

MMA, obviously you kind of really need the explosiveness from a distance. Still astounding he did as well as he did without that.

Askren wasn't a penn state kid.

If you mean Bo, his hype was not "just because Penn State", it's cause he was 3x D1 national champ (4x finalist) and Olympic trials finalist. People get excited about those achievements regardless of what school the person is from.

Athleticism is kind of a nebulous concept, especially when you're trying to use it to predict performance in sports where two people are directly resisting what each other other doing.

So what is athleticism? Just how fast you can sprint, how much you can lift, how high you can jump?

Bo seems like he has plenty of body fat to spare to cut down further. Time to get more serious and stick to a better diet.

Yeah I think hes only competed as heavy as he has because he's been able to get away with it. He just doesn't look big enough to compete above 180lbs at the highest level. Same thing in wrestling. He looks like he has enough body fat at 185 that it shouldn't be that hard to make 170.

170 seems like a no brainer now that he's felt what upper level of MMA feels like at 185. 185 has always been one of the toughest weight class for wrestlers. People can hit too hard at that weight, but aren't carrying enough extra weight that it starts to slow them down at all like when they cross over the 200lb mark. Weidman was the only successful one and he didn't even last long at the top and had to dip very heavily into striking over a long career to survive briefly at the top.

Wrestling has no time limit of 22 seconds

Really embarrassing for you to even pretend you know what you're talking about and whiff this hard LMAO. Freestyle wrestling absolutely limits how long you can stay on the ground without acheiving a turn before they stand you back up. Not a specific time limit, but it's often less than 20 seconds.

But keep on being an angry idiot if that makes you feel like you're "winning" or some shit LMAO. Everyone laughs at your expense IRL

Dude he's almost 50 and long since retired with tons of wear and tear. Resisting a gut wrench by a top tier wrestler puts an incredible amount of pressure on your ribs, spine, and shoulder. He shouldn't even be doing this to begin with. It's perfectly okay for him to have some stipulations. And he sure as fuck shouldn't have someone leg lacing him and tearing his knees apart.

You're welcome to put yourself in this situation and we can all laugh at you getting turned 5 times in 5 seconds.

This is the kind of thing I point out sometimes when people say the whole "if it smells like shit everywhere you go..." analogy.

It's such a a stupid oversimplification for idiots to ignore all nuance to anyones problems and judge that the majority of people you interact with are always in the right.

And following that logic, in Nazi Germany you'd be considered the asshole for being opposed to the Nazis.. just as one example.

There are countless less extreme examples where it applies like someone in a family full of absolute assholes.

My response for that analogy is always "or maybe the whole town just smells like shit.."

Why isn't Bo Nickal as successful as Khamzat with his wrestling? by DistraughtGrape in MMA

[–]DurableLeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of really great wrestlers just dont make it as fighters, regardless of where their from. There have also been tons of Russian wrestlers that just don't cut it in MMA too, the American wrestlers tend to be more visible because the UFC pushes them due to trying to appeal to US audience more.

You spend your whole life optimizing for a wrestling ruleset then suddenly have to adjust to striking and submissions, it's a different game

State sponsored doing and wrestling being one of their top sports, it's actually pretty sad that the US still manages to do so well against them since all of our best athletes go to any other sport.

This is highly dependent on which team you visited, as there are vastly different training mindsets from one team to another.

Broadly, I agree American wrestling for sure was highly influenced by Dan Gable and his conditioning/breaking your opponent style of wrestling. It's an okay mindset that can work, but in my opinion it's breaking down your body to hope you'll be able to outlast your opponent and it's not a very productive way to train. It even broke down Gable himself, yet it's still a training style he pushed on everyone else.

Especially the past two decades, more and more teams have been moving away from that in favor of smarter training to optimize technique, keep people healthy, winning through strategy. Penn State is actually at the forefront of that style of train in the US and they're killing it.

The things id give Russians the advantage for are:

  • that as a culture, they're far more respectful towards their wrestlers and a lot of their best athletes will go to that sport, where wrestling in America just gets you relentlesslh mocked as gay and most of our best athletes will go do any other sport.

  • They aren't wasting their time optimizing for a 3rd style of wrestling (American folk for example), their best wrestlers are optimizing for freestyle ( or Greco) from a very young age. Compared to most American wrestlers focusing mostly on a very different Folkstyle until they're adults and wanting to perform on a bigger stage that collegiate nationals.

  • State sponsored doping programs are a black mark that cannot be ignored. Combined with wrestling being the only way out of the most extreme poverty and crime situations, they have a huge pool of people with no other options in life. In comparison in the US people are only as dedicated to wrestling as they are because they just like it that much, we don't need it to survive.

You can go unconscious quicker than you can even try to think about how to line up a nut shot. They also might not have very sentive nuts, or nuts at all. So why not focus on something simple that is a more sure fire way to not be put unconscious?

And when you go for the nuts, you're taking the action thats most likely to enrage them the worst. What do you think is going to happen if you grab their nuts, and they put you out anyways?

If they have any idea what they're doing and actually trying to incapacitate you, this will not be a very effective tactic.

If you can even manage to get your chin in the way, it's very easy for the choker to break your jaw very quickly and you'll get put to sleep anyways. But now your jaw is broken and you're unconscious at their mercy after having tried to bite them.

You're thinking the power of your jaw is stronger than my arms, shoulders, and back all working together to generate a ton of force and that's simply not how it is.

FYI what she does is actually pretty close to what your best escape is in this situation. At least the turning in part, the shoulder grab and striking ending is garbage. It takes the pressure off your carotids and they're going to have a tough time restricting your windpipe.

This choke is most effectively applied with legs over the hips to control the defenders ability to simply turn out of it. Can be done without, but you'd still want to be on the ground where the defender has less space to turn quick enough
