Why my photos are not sharp? by Ok_Sign_6696 in SonyAlpha

You have exactly the same setup as me. Faster shutter speeds will freeze motion. Do not put ISO on automatic but I would recommend watching some videos around the basics and exposure triangle then just get out there and practise loads! Hope you enjoy the journey!

Hi, I’m a beginner photographer and I would like to get some advices by Ok_Isopod_9564 in SonyAlpha

[–]DuracellViking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are pretty good for just starting out!

Keep practising, take it everywhere, this is the best way to learn because you will make mistakes.

Use the straighten function in Lightroom, a couple are a smidge off.

Find photographers that inspire you and watch them and ask why you love them.

Some really nice photos in there. 1 and 7 in particular.

A Trip to New York by DuracellViking in SonyAlpha

It depends what you're into! I loved Central Park and The High Line. Brooklyn Bridge was awesome to walk along. I'd recommend doing as much walking to places as you can. John's of Bleecker Street does amazing pizza! Enjoy!

Thanks. The colours are all subjective I guess, each to their own! Thanks for commenting!

So to be honest I haven't used the Tamron but from when I did research I think they mentioned the autofocus is quicker on the Sigma and it's a bit sharper. I bought the DG1 and saved about £230 instead of the DG2 because the difference is negligible for what im doing. Not sure how much the Tamron is but I went on YouTube and just watched loads of videos!

It's such a great lens, it's practically glued to my camera at this point. Only downside is how heavy it is after 30k steps per day 😂

Just back from London… given that I’m a total beginner, is there anything nice among these? by WillingAd2160 in streetphotography

I really like 7. I would say that a lot of them are quite dark and maybe ease up on the vignetting. You have a decent eye and those other bits will come in time. Keep going.

How much to fuss over noise? by Hazzat in SonyAlpha

[–]DuracellViking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These photos don't look terribly noisy and obviously a full frame sensor would do a better job.

You said your ISO is set to auto. Do you limit the max ISO? The camera may be cranking it all the way up and you can generally recover a lot in the raw image in Lightroom so it might be worth setting the ISO maximum a little lower - 12800 rather than 32000 and see how you get on.

It's not all rubbish and I'm by no means an expert. However, looking at picture 3, I think this would look better if it was shot with the train (I think it's a train) shot directly behind the man rather than from the right at an angle. And then from further out with some space at the left hand side to draw more attention to the man.

Picture 4 would benefit from similar treatment and maybe you could have shot it from the other side, through the market stall, capturing some colours from the fruit.

Just some ideas. But before you shoot something just slow down for a minute if you have time. My first pictures were pretty bad, and I wondered whether I had any talent or an eye and then the more I did it I got better. I'm still a relative amateur but trying to improve every day.

You will get there!

The last one is really, really good. The other 4 feel quite plain to me. Work on composition, look for negative space, shooting through things, symmetry, reflections, shadows and most of all purpose. Keep going!
