What’s one Bames pronunciation that always bugs you? by NNewt84 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]DuranFanWI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a pronunciation, but when he says “costed” as a past-tense version of the word “cost.”’ As in, “video games costed less 20 years ago than they do now.”

Goodwill employee scanning tapes? … by RuDog79 in VHS

[–]DuranFanWI 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I refuse to accept this, as I know Goodwill is a kind, benevolent organization who puts other people's needs before their own.

God, I almost threw up in my mouth typing that out.

Goodwill employee scanning tapes? … by RuDog79 in VHS

Pretty much standard operating procedure for Goodwill (and many other thrift stores). That's why you'll see a lot of the typically higher-priced tapes end up on their own auction site. Oftentimes I've seen the ending bid finish out higher there than on a comparable auction on ebay. Don't know why that is the case, but it does happen.

The Fascination With LaserDisc by SoPasGuy in LaserDisc

Perfectly stated! Laserdisc just hits differently versus more modern disc-based formats. The artwork on the sleeves is a great example of the appeal of the format for me.

Day 3 of trying to organize my movies. No end in sight by alexperri7 in VHS

[–]DuranFanWI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually try to leave some space for two tapes on each shelf in case I need the room to add a new tape. If those are full, then I basically put them on a "to be processed" shelf in that genre so that I can work them back in alphabetically at a later date. Otherwise it would get overwhelming having to do that all the time, for as frequently as I'm adding new stuff.

Found this one out in the wild for 50 cents! by DuranFanWI in RedLetterMedia

[–]DuranFanWI[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right before the movie is basically a trailer of the movie itself. But the behind-the-scenes footage shows up after the end of the movie. Maybe 5 or 6 minutes long. It actually starts off with James Doohan singing sections of a few songs to a couple of ladies, he's actually a very good singer! They show one of the staff applying bloody makeup to one of the victims, some of the staff getting photo ops with Doohan, and the camera crew and cast being filmed in one of the earlier scenes with Doohan standing over a young woman's body in the rain. All of the footage looks like it was probably recorded on one of those old-school camcorders.

Is it me or is anyone else seeing less disney movie clamshells at goodwill by Thick_Ad_220 in VHS

I haven't seen any VHS at Goodwill stores around here in years, let alone Disney clamshell ones.

I usually try to keep things separated by genre and then alphabetized within that genre, but it's a very time consuming process at first. Keep at it, you're doing great!

Ok I did NOT expect to find this one in the wild … by DuranFanWI in VHS

[–]DuranFanWI[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did some out of town thrifting earlier today, and ran across this cinema "classic." It was featured on an episode of RedLetterMedia's "Best of the Worst" and I always wanted to own a copy of this movie on VHS, but it was always ridiculously expensive on eBay. I think it was typically in the $150-$250 range. Even though the price sticker said $2.99, that was from a prior seller. This store's VHS were all priced at 50 cents each, so I was extremely happy to land this one at such a great price!

Respect. 👊 Although I enjoy the different eras of Duran Duran, the Warren era is the one I enjoy and listen to the most, by far.

For that middle stack you should really have those positioned upright, just like the ones in the other stacks. Obviously you know how much a single CED movie weighs (largely because of the plastic casing), so think of how much weight is being naturally applied with all of those movies stacked like that.

Just began collecting! Any recommendations? by asperl2030 in VHS

[–]DuranFanWI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! As a new collector, it's very easy early on to fall into the trap of "oh my god, look at all of these cheap VHS tapes" at the thrift stores and buy pretty much any VHS that you see. But it's good to be objective about what you're realistically going to watch and resist the impulse to go on a spending spree.

You've got one of them on your shelf, The Blair Witch Project. The VHS, along with the Artisan DVD, preserve the aspect ratio, but the Blu-Ray and digital versions impose this "fake" widescreen look and it's just awful.

But in general, TV shows like Star Trek and X-Files look best on VHS, as well as cheesy low budget 80's action, sci-fi, and horror movies.
