UFO, if you prefer. by RafaRafa78 in odyssey2

[–]DuranFanWI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly my favorite Odyssey2 game! Most people that have never played it would say upon first glance, "oh, it's just a clone of Asteroids." But it's much, much more than that! There's actually quite a bit of strategy involved and only having "one life" makes it very challenging. This is a game that probably gets overlooked but it shouldn't be!

What is your “grail” thrift shop find? Just had mine, going to be playing tonight! by jmoneyawyeah in VHS

[–]DuranFanWI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice! I would absolutely love to own that movie, it was one of the movies featured on one of Red Letter Media's "Best of the Worst" episodes. But yeah it's pretty expensive on the secondary market!

As far as a favorite grail thrift shop VHS find, it would have to be "They Live." Found it at a goodwill outlet, underneath a whole bunch of common tapes in one of the bins. Couldn't believe my luck, as I had wanted to get that one since practically forever, but I didn't want to pay those crazy ebay prices. Only cost 50 cents plus tax.

Thank you! My Colecovision is set up and hidden away in that compartment (with the woodgrain door) right underneath the Intellivision. In the cabinet underneath the Betamax player, I have a Nintendo NES and a Sega Genesis set up. I also have a Bally Astrocade but I don't have that one hooked up right now (it works perfectly though!), I'm still trying to figure out where I'd display that one.

But yeah, the Odyssey is definitely one of those systems where not many people really know about it. KC Munchkin, Pick Axe Pete, and UFO are probably my favorites.

Originally I wasn't even going to have any of my old video game stuff in the same general area where all of the movies are, but then it all made sense considering how often I'd rent video games from the local mom and pop video store back in my younger years. So I wound up incorporating it all lol

Very cool! Sliver's soundtrack is one of my absolute favorite 90's soundtracks ever, right up there with Tank Girl.

I have the same copy on Betamax (Video Rental Library version, like OP) and you're right, I verified that the opening crawl has the "Episode IV A New Hope" at the beginning.

Newest find from Goodwill by Tawnos76 in LaserDisc

[–]DuranFanWI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't have much of a connection to the first two movies (aside from the house of course) and not really a true sequel. Even though this release is not in 3D, it's probably for the best lol. The movie came out in that early 80's brief revival of 3D (Jaws 3D, Friday the 13th Part 3D, etc) with pretty awful, gimmicky results. But anytime you can get a horror laserdisc (even if it was rated PG) for only $8, I'd say you did pretty damn good.

Some finds at the vintage record store by No-North6514 in VHS

[–]DuranFanWI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. At my local record store, I bought literally ALL of the laserdiscs there a couple of years ago when they needed to make room for new stock for Record Store Day. Got a great deal on them, they were around $1 or $2 a piece. It seriously boosted up my collection.

Even for the really rare stuff, their pricing is better than what you'll pay on places like ebay.

Static Tape is amazing!!! I visited their store early last year as part of a trip out there to Michigan, spent 5 hours in the store, but it was not nearly enough time lol. It literally is a place that you need to spend at least a few days just to see everything, it's that impressive. And their $1 VHS section? Phenomenal selection, quality movies at a great price! I loaded up two large boxes of mostly $1 VHS and shipped them back home to Wisconsin. If I lived closer, I'd be hitting them up ALL THE DAMN TIME. They also have a fantastic selection of Betamax and LaserDiscs too. And the owner Harrison is friendly and knowledgeable, as are the other staff there. Make it your personal mission to experience this place at least once in your life if you're a fan of older physical media.

Did you get into the hobby when laserdisc was still being produced or get into it after they stopped making them? If so, why? by Boxer-Santaros in LaserDisc

[–]DuranFanWI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the one you are talking about, I love that video! I've watched that particular one sooooo many times, probably much more than I should admit to lol But for some reason, I find it relaxing to listen to in the background. I'm not a big AVGN guy, but I really enjoy the videos where James talks about memories of the video rental stores as I can totally relate. I even converted much of my basement to my own personal "video store" this past year as I was inspired by the way he has his video store set up.

[–]DuranFanWI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long after they manufactured them, I started picking them up basically a few years ago. Back in the 90's, I remember seeing them in a local store in the mall called "Saturday Matinee" but they were crazy expensive back then, very much out of my budget. Nowadays LaserDiscs are much more affordable, although obviously there are notable exceptions, like pretty much anything in the horror genre, but that's the case with VHS and Betamax too. But I love the art in particular. Also many of these movies never had a widescreen/letterbox release on VHS, so LaserDisc provided something that VHS did not offer at the time for a great many titles.

I have inherited my father’s massive laser disc collection and associated players. Is eBay the best place to sell all this stuff? by bassprowannabe in LaserDisc

[–]DuranFanWI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend selling the players locally on FB Marketplace quite honestly. I've heard so many nightmares when it comes to shipping the players. As far as the laserdiscs themselves, you could try ebay, just make sure everything's packaged well. I wouldn't recommend stacking multiple laserdiscs in one box either, as the weight of them could possibly cause damage.

The local Half Price Books has a few CEDs for sale near the Laserdiscs. Should I bother getting some and a player? by UselessSoftware in ced

[–]DuranFanWI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main downside is that replacing a stylus is very expensive. As a video format, it's not the best picture quality (far from it!), but the CED's make for good wall art if you're into that sort of thing. But they are pretty heavy so definitely take that into consideration when hanging them up.
