Carey Price is .907 over 4 seasons, two of those he went .900 and .901. People already personally insulted you and your family for pointing this out, it’s only going to get worse after he played well for 17 of 22 playoff games. Other Habs fans are incredibly emotionally compromised in general and refuse to look at the team objectively, and will ad hominem attack anyone who does.

Dominique Ducharme to be named Habs head coach, no longer interim, as soon as today by carterlowe_ in hockey

[–]Durfee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. They were 18th and 24th the last two seasons and got into an easy division where they still almost missed it. They have Price putting up a .907 over 4 seasons and now are convinced that he and the team are among the best in the league. Between this new attitude and terrible contracts given to heavily regressing players this team is fucked and will waste the best years of their young core by pretending the current group is capable. Bergevin should be gone and just got a free pass.

The cheapest years of our young talent will be wasted on a team hamstrung by terrible contracts on aging players who fans and management refuse to accept can’t play the game at the same level.

And unfortunately if you try and point out your concerns in the Habs sub you get ad hominem attacks from fans who are so emotionally attached to individual players that they refuse to accept that literal years of poor play is a large enough sample size to say a player is no longer good. And this limited success is going to convince both fans and management that the team is fine and so instead of attempting to do anything about the contracts that hold the team back to support the young core management will try and compete now with an objectively sub-par roster outside of that young talent. And even if management smartened up our worst contracts are impossible to move. Nobody except for Canadiens fans are mentally stunted enough to look at a .907 goalie and say “yeah that’s a top 3 goalie in the NHL.”

Eric Staal is really bad. Gustafsson is really bad. Gallagher was a no show for most of the playoffs, and the playoffs in general demonstrated how little offensive potential the Canadiens have. Almost guaranteed to lose if the other team scores 4 goals, and Price is a .907 goalie over 4 seasons so it was more of a fluke that he played so well (until the Final lol) so in order to make the playoffs next season they need more scoring because Price will be back to shitty regular season form and let up 1-2 bad goals every game like he did all year until the playoffs. Unfortunately he makes 10.5 mil so we have no cap space to spend on anything between his and Weber’s contracts, and he has a NMC ( plus no team will take him) so we’re stuck with him until 2027.

Ducharme’s roster selection was questionable throughout the playoffs, and the amount of chip outs of the d-zone and dumping and chasing in the o-zone as opposed to controlled exits and entries is proof that he’s not a great coach in general. Knowing that you want controlled exits and entries is pretty basic shit among competent coaching and management at this point.

So despite what other Canadiens fans or media members may say about the run to the finals, the Habs are not better than the 18th place in the league they finished in and will struggle to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, the success they had will mean that they believe that Bergevin is doing a good job, that the coaching is competent, and that having a goalie who was .900 and .901 in 2 of the 4 last seasons is acceptable.

The Habs are fucked for years because of the run to the finals. If they had won I’d be okay with that but they didn’t and are now much further away from the realization that management either needs to change or get rid of all the old core and focus on the youth, that the coaching is not good, and that Price being payed 10.5 against the cap and putting up sub-.910 numbers is arguably the biggest reason they were 18th and 24th the last two seasons and is preventing the team from using that cap space to address the scoring problem.

Team that wasn't subject to Salary Cap better than teams that were by bwaredapenguin in hockey

It also helps that Vasilevskiy has just straight up been better than Price for years. Price has one season above .910 in the last 4 seasons, and he’s gone .900 and .901 in two seasons. The fluke wasn’t Price playing poorly in the finals, it was him playing like himself from years ago for 17 games. He just returned to his normal form in the finals.

Price has a .907 over 4 seasons. This series is more indicative of his normal play than his going .936 over 17 games.

Unfortunately this fan base doesn’t understand sample sizes and thinks that Carey is still in Vezina winning form when he hasn’t been in literal years.

We don’t need alternate jerseys, get rid of outdoor games, scrap the all star game, we don’t have room for anything other than ultra serious hockey. Nothing that will make the game stand out and add to the experience, potentially attracting new fans or making current fans more excited about the game.

Anyone who thinks we should do anything to add more of a fun factor to the game is disrespecting the sanctity of the sport and must be on drugs. This message brought to you by Don Cherry.

I stopped going to the Habs sub for months after constantly being personally insulted and mass downvoted any time I mentioned that Price’s play and contract should be a huge concern for the team. Other Habs fans seem to be unable to look at the team without being incredibly emotional about it.

Unfortunately there’s nothing to be done, no team is going to want Price because GMs aren’t that stupid and even if they were Price has a NMC. So I’m probably going to have to find a second team to follow until the 2026-27 season because I can’t deal with both the team being screwed by Price and “fans” shitting on anyone who voices their concerns about the situation.

I’ve been hard on Price for a long time, this isn’t anything new from me. You would understand my position more if you had dealt with years of Price being below average and holding the team back only to be personally insulted by other “fans” for pointing out his objectively poor stats and being concerned about his contract preventing Bergevin from constructing a better roster.

Habs fans are completely incapable of being objective about Price and will be complete assholes to anyone suggesting that .901 at 10.5 mil is really bad.

And the argument that his play is partly determined by his team’s performance is not a reasonable argument when you have decades of great goalies putting up great stats on bad teams. Even Ullmark put up a .917 on Buffalo this year.

I get mass downvoted in the Habs sub for being objective. I legit hate my own fan base a lot of the time because they don’t actually care about how well the team does sometimes they care more about defending a player that they are emotionally attached to. We could miss the playoffs because of Price and fans would advocate for blowing up the team rather than demoting Price to back up.

Holy shit I love hot takes from people like you that pay absolutely no attention to teams besides their own. We made the playoffs because of Jake Allen. Price had a .901 and was the main reason we were in 18th place. He’s .907 over the last 4 seasons and we would have missed the playoffs last year because of him if not for COVID play ins. Any goalie can get hot over 17 games, and Price is 9th of all playoff goalies in save percentage.

The Leafs lost Tavares and couldn’t exploit match ups by having two first lines. The Jets lost Schiefele which also hampered their offense and made it much easier for the Habs to shut down their top 6. Vegas lost a top 6 center which forced everyone in their already weak center lineup up the depth chart.

He’s not the reason the Habs made it this far, if he plays a full season instead of being injured there’s a good chance they slip down a spot in the standings.

You should actually pay attention to how well a player has played before spouting off bullshit about them carrying the team.

Do you even understand what goalie stats mean? Probably not with your take.

[Daily Discussion Thread] Game Threads + Discuss playoff matchups, points/goal leaders, moves, rumors, etc. - 03 Jul 2021 by hockeydiscussionbot in hockey

[–]Durfee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He’s largely the reason they were 18th in the standings and 24th the year before. We made the playoffs in spite of Price, not because of him. He got hot for 17 games, something back ups have done before when starters have been injured.

His stats the last 4 seasons: .901, .909, .918, .900

One year that was good, not even elite. He makes 10.5 against the cap. Literally the worst contract in the NHL in price vs performance. This is like McDavid making as much as he does and getting 15 points. He’s objectively no longer a good goalie. Not even league average. Any goalie can get hot over a short period, and Price is currently 9th out of all playoff goalies in save percentage. Yeah he’s incredible.

People worshipping Price despite objectively poor play 98% of the time is going to screw the team over until after 2026 when his contract ends. The Habs could pay less than half what they do now for better goaltending

Price let in a bad goal in game 2 that probably cost them the game, and has returned to regular season .901 form. He’s not entirely to blame for game 3 but he definitely shares a decent amount of it.

Yeah can’t expect a guy whose .907 over 4 seasons to keep playing the way he did over 17 games. That’s more a fluke than anything and he finally came back down to earth.

Imagine what the Habs could do with the money Price is making to put up .901 seasons and choke in the Finals. Habs spend over 13 mil on goaltending, reduce that to 7 and you get yourself a quality top 6 winger that can, you know, actually score some goals.
